McAloose to lead Florida Gulf Coast athletics

Florida Gulf Coast has selected Carl McAloose as director of athletics, effective July 24.

Since August 1996, McAloose has served as commissioner of the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Before his tenure there, he was associate commissioner of the Big Sky Conference. From 1990 to 1992, McAloose fulfilled responsibilities as associate athletics director at Coastal Carolina. He also has been associate athletics director and head men's and women's tennis coach at West Chester. Additionally, McAloose has served stints as sports information director at Guilford and Frostburg State.

A graduate of Western Maryland with a bachelor's degree in physical education and athletics administration, McAloose earned a master's degree in education with a concentration in physical education and athletics administration from Frostburg State.

Akron selected Mike Rodriguez as interim athletics director to replace Dennis Helsel. Rodriguez has been with the school's athletics department since 1987 and currently is assistant athletics director for business ... Joe Hakes was hired as director of athletics at Gordon. Hakes has been with King College, an NAIA institution in Bristol, Tennessee, for 10 years, most recently serving as athletics director and associate professor of physical education ... Mike Harrington was elevated to director of athletics at Farmingdale, effective April 15, to replace Bruce Robbins. Harrington has been director of development and associate athletics director since 1995 and also is head women's basketball coach ... Hawaii-Hilo's Bill Trumbo resigned as athletics director ... Bill Trenbeath, athletics director at Willamette, announced retirement plans ... Jackson State hired Roy Culberson as athletics director to succeed Paul Covington, who retired, and interim athletics director Robert Braddy. For the past two years, Culberson has fulfilled similar duties at Montevallo ... Oregon awarded athletics director Bill Moos a four-year contract extension ... SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS

Manhattanville promoted Gail Lozado to senior woman administrator and associate athletics director. Lozado has been interim associate athletics director since February and also has been head women's lacrosse coach for seven years ... Lori Wilkerson was elevated to senior woman administrator and assistant director of athletics at Franklin. Wilkerson has been head volleyball coach for two years and will retain her coaching duties ... Massachusetts Liberal Arts elevated Dorothy Houston to senior woman administrator and assistant director of athletics. Houston relinquished responsibilities as head women's basketball coach, a position she has held for 10 years.

Cindy Cohen was chosen as associate director of athletics at Rochester ... Arkansas hired Derrick Gragg as associate athletics director for compliance. For the past three years, Gragg has served as assistant athletics director for compliance at Michigan ... Stonehill promoted Cindy MacDonald to associate athletics director for internal affairs and compliance, effective July 1. MacDonald has been assistant director of athletics.

Jacksonville hired Jamie Zeitz as assistant athletics director for media relations. Nick Joos was hired as assistant athletics director for media relations at Massachusetts. Joos has been director of basketball operations at Nebraska for the past five years ... Todd Smith resigned as assistant athletics director and head men's basketball coach at Becker ... New York Tech chose Lenore Walsh as assistant director of athletics ... Edward McLaughlin was selected as assistant athletics director for facilities and operations at American, effective May 1. Baseball -- Joe Vavra accepted head coaching responsibilities at Wisconsin-Stout to replace the retiring Terry Petrie. For the past 18 years, Vavra has held various positions with Major League Baseball's Los Angeles Dodgers, including coach, manager and field coordinator ... Detroit head coach Bob Miller announced retirement plans ... Les Murakami, head coach at Hawaii, was awarded a contract extension ... Memphis released Jeff Hopkins as head coach ... The school appointed four-year assistant coach John Kirby as Donohoe's successor ... Quinnipiac head women's cross country and track coach Deb Gibilaro resigned after seven years.

Field hockey -- Millersville named Diane Drumheller as head coach ... Notre Dame (Maryland) announced the selection of Susan Mackley as head coach. Mackley has been an assistant field hockey coach at Fallston (Maryland) High School and with Futures, an organization that prepares high-school students for Olympic and international competition ... Jack White was named head coach at Marywood. Currently, White serves as vice-president for the England Mixed Hockey Association.

Field hockey assistants -- Meaghan Nitka accepted assistant coaching responsibilities at Iowa ... Marywood hired Sara Clause as an assistant coach.

Football -- Upper Iowa elevated Craig Johnston to head coach. Johnston, who succeeds Paul Rudolph, has served as defensive coordinator for the past nine years.

Football assistants -- James West was chosen as linebackers coach at Millersville ... Sean Ryan was chosen as running backs coach and Ben Burton was chosen as assistant defensive football coach at Colgate ... Youngstown State announced the resignation of Herb Williams, wide receivers coach for the past three seasons. The school elevated Trent Boykin, a part-time coach, to full-time wide receivers coach ... Mike Summers was chosen as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator at Oklahoma State ... Shepherd's Jeff Casteel resigned as defensive coordinator after nine years to accept a defensive line coaching position at Texas-El Paso, and Carmen Felus, offensive coordinator, resigned to become offensive coordinator at Indiana (Pennsylvania). The program recently was elevated to varsity status after one year at the club level and will compete in the Division III Centennial Conference. Diehl served as head coach for the school's club team ... South Alabama selected Tom Jackson as head women's coach ... Cal Poly hired Scott Cartwright as head men's and women's coach. Cartwright has been head coach at San Luis Obispo (California) High School from 1997 to 1999 and head golf professional at the San Luis Obispo Golf and Country Club since 1990 ... Al Brown resigned as head men's lacrosse and golf coach at Bates to become athletics director and boys' lacrosse coach at Portsmouth Abbey School in Portsmouth, Rhode Island. Brown led the lacrosse program for five years and was head golf coach in 1999 ... Manhantanville added Chapel Love as head women's lacrosse and field hockey coach. Love has spent the past season as an assistant field hockey coach at Vassar ... Dowling added Tim Boyle as head men's coach ... Jamie Fiegel was awarded duties as head women's coach at Medialle ... Since 1998, Conlon has been an assistant coach at Loras and at the high-school level ... Scott Kennell was awarded duties as head coach at Lycoming ... Keith Byrnes was appointed as head coach at Plymouth State ... Western New England named Erin Sullivan as head coach.

Men's soccer assistants -- Niall Archbold and Brett Polow were chosen as assistant coaches at New York University ... California added Brad Agoos as an assistant coach ... Ryan Molloy was hired as a full-time assistant coach at Virginia Wesleyan. Molloy, a 2000 graduate of the school, was a four-year starter on the men's soccer team.

Women's soccer -- Mount Holyoke selected Kristen Martini as head coach. Martini has led the women's soccer and softball programs at Pomona-Pitzer since 1997 ... Long Island added Tracey Bartholomew as head coach ... Stephanie McGuinness was awarded duties as head coach at St. Cloud State. Men's and women's tennis -- Montana State announced the resignations of Heidi Tate, tennis director and head women's coach, and Dean Owen, head men's coach ... Paul Maxwell was selected as head men's coach at Presbyterian.

Men's and women's track and field -- Bob Rothenberg announced plans to retire as director of track and field and cross country at Brown. The school appointed associate head coach Robert Johnson, who has been with the program since 1991, as Rothenberg's successor ... Tiffin appointed Jeremy Croy as head track and field and head women's cross country coach ... Michael Smith, assistant track coach at UNC Wilmington for seven years, was awarded head men's and women's track and field coaching duties at Robert Morris, succeeding interim head coach Drew Dershimer. Dershimer was named assistant track coach and head men's and women's cross country coach at the school after serving as assistant track and cross country coach at the school for more than three years.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Mount Holyoke awarded head women's coaching duties to Kristen Eberhart. Eberhart succeeds Penny Curtis, who retired in May after 19 years ... Tom Weislo was named as head men's coach at Hilbert. Most recently, Weislo has fulfilled duties as a women's assistant coach at Buffalo State ... Saint Joseph's (Indiana) hired Greg Reitz as head women's coach to succeed Kevin Furnish. Reitz has been a graduate assistant coach at Toledo for the past year ... Wooster named Terri Mason as head coach to replace Brenda Skeffington. Mason has been coaching volleyball and teaching at the high-school level ... Wrestling -- Upper Iowa chose Heath Grimm as head coach to succeed Sam Barber ... Nebraska appointed Mark Manning as head coach.

Administrative assistant -- New York Tech appointed Carmela Gandolfo as an administrative assistant.

Athletic training assistant -- Cornell assistant athletic trainer Glenn (Rick) LaFrance retired after 31 years.

Communications -- Brian Gunning was selected as assistant director of athletics communications at Syracuse.

Development -- Maureen Cooper was appointed as Hornet Athletic Foundation coordinator at Cal State Sacramento. Cooper most recently has been assistant director of championships at the Pacific-10 Conference.

Facilities -- James Massari was chosen as facilities supervisor at New York Tech.

Marketing and promotions -- Wendy McReynolds and Robert Zullo were chosen as assistant directors of sports marketing and promotions at Virginia Tech.

Media relations -- St. Lawrence named Kenneth Baker as associate director of media relations.

Sports information -- Mike Sanders was hired as sports information director at Goucher. Most recently Sanders has been sports editor for the Gettysburg Times ... Ramsey Baker resigned as sports information director at Jacksonville, effective, May 31 ... New York Tech added Dave Geringer as sports information director.

The Old Dominion Athletic Conference named Gregg Bennett as men's basketball supervisor of officials.

Reggie Minton was hired as assistant executive director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches. Minton has been an assistant at Air Force and head coach at Dartmouth and Air Force. He also has chaired the NCAA Men's Basketball Rules Committee.

Marissa Irvin, a sophomore at Stanford, and Jeff Morrison, a junior at Florida, were selected as Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Players of the Month for April.

Barbara Hedges, director of athletics at Washington, was named as the winner of the Honda Award of Merit. This honor is presented to an individual who has made a significant and enduring contribution to women's college athletics. Hedges has been leading the athletics program at Washington since 1991. In 1996-97, Hedges was the first woman to serve as president of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics, and in 1998 Hedges became the first woman to sit on the board of directors for the National Football Foundation.

ITA National Coach of the Year -- Ron Cox, Northeastern State; ITA National Senior Player of the Year -- Katerina Koldova, Lynn; ITA National Rookie of the Year -- Stephanie Kovacic, Armstrong Atlantic State; ITA National Player to Watch -- Tagifano So'onalole, Brigham Young-Hawaii; Tennis Magazine/Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award -- Danielle Faretta, Bloomsburg.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association will induct the following six coaches and players into the ITA Collegiate Men's Tennis Hall of Fame: Coaches -- David Benjamin, Princeton; Brian Eisner, Michigan and Toledo; and John Hammill, Miami (Florida). Players -- Crawford Henry, Tulane; Mikael Pernfors, Georgia; and Henry W. Slocum, Jr., Yale. Slocum is being inducted posthumously.

Edwina Brown, a senior basketball guard/forward at Texas, was selected as winner of the 2000 Wade Trophy awarded in partnership with the National Association for Girls and Women in Sport, Women's Basketball Coaches Association and Pupule Sports. Brown, a sport management major, is one of three basketball players in school history to accumulate more than 1,500 points, 400 assists and 200 steals.

Arizona golfer Jenna Daniels was named as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in her sport for 1999-00. Daniels, a senior, earned recognition as 2000 Pacific-10 Conference golfer of the year and as a first-team all-Pacific-10 selection for the third straight year.

DEATHS

Alabama assistant men's basketball coach Robert "Rah Rah" Scott died recently of stomach cancer. Scott, 42, had been an assistant with the program since 1998 and formerly was an assistant at Alabama-Birmingham for three seasons.

Irvin R. Schmid, former Springfield men's soccer coach, died May 2. He was 79. Schmid served as head coach of the men's program from 1948-62 and 1964-84, leading squads to appearances in the Division I national tournament in 1962 and 1963. Springfield teams also made appearances in the Division II national tournament in 1972, 1973 and 1974. During his tenure, Schmid also was assistant gymnastics, track and freshman lacrosse coach.

Steve Belko, former basketball coach and conference commissioner, died May 12 at the age of 84. He was head men's basketball coach at Idaho State (then Idaho State College) from 1951 to 1956. He also guided the Oregon men's basketball program from 1956 to 1971. Belko served as Big Sky Conference commissioner from 1977 to 1981.

Virginia Tech ticket manager Tom McNeer died May 2. McNeer was 60.

Former basketball coach Bill C. Musselman died May 5. Musselman served as head basketball coach at South Alabama, Minnesota and Ashland.
