Tennessee promotes Pavon to golf post

Tennessee has promoted Judy Pavon to head women's golf coach. Pavon replaces Lori Brock, who resigned.

Pavon joined the program as an assistant during the 1997-98 season. After assuming interim head coaching duties May 3, she led the squad to a fourth-place finish in the NCAA East Regional. The team's fifth-place finish at this year's Division I Women's Golf Championships was the program's best.

Before coming to Tennessee, Pavon won two Montana state women's amateur titles in 1987 and 1989. She also spent 1991 and 1992 on the Ladies Professional Golf Association Tour.

Collegiately, Pavon competed at Alabama. She earned all-academic recognition three times in addition to capturing all-Southeastern Conference honors and all-America status as a senior.

Men's and women's cross country -- Branwen Smith-King resigned as head women's cross country and track and field coach at Tufts to accept an administrative role in the athletics department ... Jenny Breuer was hired as head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Trinity (Texas). Breuer, who has served as an assistant with the programs for the past season, succeeds Johnny Gonzales.

Field hockey -- Laurie Kerr resigned as head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at Muhlenberg.

Football -- McNeese State head coach Kirby Bruchhaus resigned. The school selected Tommy Tate as interim head coach.

Football assistants -- John DeFilippo accepted responsibilities as quarterbacks coach at Fordham ... Middle Tennessee State appointed Kacy Rodgers as assistant head coach and awarded Steve Bird, wide receivers coach, with additional duties as special teams coach ... Jon McLaughlin resigned as an assistant coach at Muhlenberg. An assistant since 1996, McLaughlin has been offensive coordinator and offensive line coach for three seasons and was head baseball coach for two seasons ... Clarion appointed Barry Fagan as offensive coordinator ... Ryan Carfley was added as an assistant offensive coach and Kevin Kelly was added as an assistant defensive coach at Rutgers.

Men's and women's golf -- Cal Poly chose Tom Moos as head men's and women's coach ... Melissa McNamara accepted head women's coaching duties at Tulsa ... Ian Thompson accepted head women's coaching responsibilities at Samford after serving as a men's assistant golf coach at the school last season ... High Point selected J.B. White as head men's coach.

Men's and women's gymnastics -- Cal State Fullerton awarded head coach Julie Knight with a three-year contract. Knight, who was associate head coach in 1999, has been interim head coach and succeeds Lynn Rogers, who retired.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Princeton named Len Quesnelle as head coach ... Northland hired Dan Huntley as head men's coach. Most recently, Huntley has been coaching at Shattuck-St. Mary's School, a college preparatory boarding school, and at Rainy River Community College, which Huntley guided to the National Junior College Athletic Association national championship in 1999 ... Margot Page accepted a contract extension as head coach at Niagara through the 2001-02 season ... Fairfield head men's coach Mark Dennehy resigned to become an assistant men's coach at Massachusetts.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Curry selected Caitlin Roberts as head women's lacrosse and assistant women's soccer coach ... Ben Wineburg was appointed as head men's coach at Brockport State ... John Haus resigned as head men's coach at Johns Hopkins to become head men's coach at North Carolina. Haus succeeds Dave Klarmann.

Men's and women's rowing -- Vassar hired Michael Alton as head men's and women's coach. Alton, formerly an assistant at Temple and Drexel, succeeds interim head coach Nancy LaRocque, who became head coach at West Virginia.

Men's and women's rowing assistant -- Matt Imes was named as an assistant coach at Oregon State.

Men's soccer -- Scott Frey, head men's soccer and assistant track and field coach at Alma, resigned to become head women's soccer coach and sports information director at Messiah.

Men's soccer assistant -- Marcus DiBernardo was named as an assistant coach at Central Connecticut State.

Women's soccer -- Deborah Raber was hired as head soccer and head softball coach at Massachusetts Liberal Arts, effective August 31. Raber, who succeeds Chris Flint, has been a graduate associate and head junior varsity coach at Springfield ... Lycoming named Katherine Roberts as head women's soccer and lacrosse coach ... Darren Ambrose was chosen as head coach at Pennsylvania to replace Andy Nelson. Ambrose spent last season as an assistant at Florida State ... Ohio named Stacy Strauss as head coach ... Tamie Grimes was promoted to interim head coach at San Jose State after fulfilling assistant coaching duties for the past two seasons. Grimes replaces Philippe Blin ... Virginia Wesleyan awarded head coaching duties to Jeffrey Bowers. Most recently, in addition to being an assistant at Messiah, Bowers has been head coach at the high-school level for three years ... Thomas Skoglund was named head coach at Clark (Massachusetts). Skoglund, who succeeds Andy Schechter, has been an assistant girls' varsity coach at the high-school level.

Women's soccer assistant -- Montana moved Erik Snyder from volunteer assistant to full-time assistant coach.

Softball -- San Jose State released Connie Miner as head coach. Miner has been head coach for four seasons ... Cyndi Raymond resigned after two seasons as head coach at Northern Colorado, effective June 30 ... Cal State Fullerton signed Michelle Gromacki to a three-year contract as head coach. Gromacki, who succeeds Judi Garman, was an assistant with the program for five years before assuming interim head coaching duties in January.

Men's and women's swimming -- Kevin Thornton was chosen as head women's coach at Greensboro. Thornton, a former head coach at Florida from 1996 to 1998, will continue to fulfill head coaching duties with the Greensboro Swim Association.

Men's and women's swimming assistants -- Seth Williams was selected as men's and women's assistant swimming and diving coach at Syracuse. The school also elevated Ellie Walker to men's and women's assistant swimming and diving coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- Jacqueline Bunting was named as head women's coach at Towson, replacing Denis Rende. Bunting has been an assistant women's coach at Auburn for the past season ... Stanford head women's coach Frank Brennan resigned, effective September 1. In 21 years, Brennan built a 510-50 record and captured 10 NCAA championships. The school announced associate head coach Lele Forood has been chosen as head coach. Forood has been with the program since 1988 ... Sheila Bush accepted duties as head men's and women's coach at Messiah ... Sam Houston's Vicki Markowsky resigned as head women's coach.

Men's and women's track and field -- Brad Hackett was appointed coordinator of cross country and track and field at Muhlenberg. Hackett, who will oversee all running programs, will continue to serve as head track and field coach and Linda Andrews will continue as head men's and women's cross country coach ... Gina Procaccio was elevated to head women's track and field and cross country coach at Villanova.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Alan Knipe was elevated to head men's coach at Long Beach State after serving as associate head coach with the program ... Shannon Elliot accepted head women's coaching duties at Delaware.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Oregon selected Anna Reznicek as women's assistant coach ... Irene Renteria was added as an assistant women's coach at Virginia. From 1996 to 1999 Renteria has served as an assistant coach at Michigan ... Southern Methodist appointed Cris Martin as an assistant women's coach.

Men's and women's water polo -- Long Beach State awarded Rick Azevedo the position of head women's coach.

STAFF

Athletics communications assistants -- Syracuse chose Brian Gunning as assistant director of athletics communications. For the past year, Gunning has fulfilled duties as associate director of sports information at Marshall ... Craig Sachson was added as assistant director of athletics communications at Cornell. Sachson has been with the office of athletics communications at Princeton for the past two years.

Athletic trainer -- Austin named Staci Slater as head athletic trainer. Slater, who joined the athletics department as an athletic training fellow in August 1999, has been serving in an interim capacity since February.

Athletic training assistants -- Sharon Lower was promoted to assistant athletic trainer at Syracuse. Lower has been a graduate assistant athletic trainer since 1998. Syracuse also appointed Bradley Pike as associate athletic trainer. Pike most recently has been managing five outpatient orthopedic rehabilitation centers for Sports Physical Therapy of New York.

Business services assistant -- Evansville chose Darian Westerfield as business and event management assistant.

External operations -- David Jackson accepted responsibilities as director of external operations at Appalachian State after most recently fulfilling the position on an interim basis.

External relations -- North Carolina-Greensboro appointed Tim Clever as external relations director for athletics to succeed Seth Bennett, effective June 1. Clever has been director of promotions and media relations for the Greensboro Bats baseball club since 1997.

Facilities assistant -- Villanova promoted Jim Belzer to assistant director of facilities.

Media relations assistant -- St. John's (New York) awarded assistant director of media relations duties to Adrienne Mullikin.

Sales -- Ryan Fannon was promoted to director of sales and broadcasting at Villanova.

Sports information -- Justin Parker was hired as sports information officer at Trinity (Texas) ... Kelby Siler, assistant sports information director at Appalachian State, was elevated to sports information director.

Sports information assistants -- Bradley named Scot Latek as sports information intern. Latek, who replaces Brian Borkovec, most recently worked as a graduate assistant in the sports information office at Western Illinois ... Brett Swick resigned as assistant sports information director at Seton Hall ... Creighton hired Amy Wilson as assistant sports information director. Most recently, Wilson has been media and public relations coordinator for USA Rugby ... Evansville added Thomas Benson as sports information intern.

Sports medicine -- Syracuse named Tim Neal as coordinator of sports medicine, replacing Don Lowe. Neal has been with the school's sports medicine staff for 18 years.

Strength and conditioning -- William Hicks Jr. was appointed as head strength and conditioning coach at Syracuse. Hicks, who succeeds Mike Gerber, has been assistant athletics director for football operations at North Carolina State since March 1999. Syracuse also announced the promotion of Corey Parker to associate head strength and conditioning coach.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- Hal Luther was chosen as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Syracuse.

Assistant ticket manager -- Drake hired Nate Pokrass as assistant athletics ticket manager.

CONFERENCES

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference appointed the following individuals for 2000-01: James A. Liguori, president; Dennis J. Murray, vice-president; Joe Boylan, chair, committee on athletics administration; and Barbara Green, vice-chair, committee on athletics administration. The conference also awarded Commissioner Richard Ensor with a contract extension through June 30, 2003.

The contract of Craig Thompson, commissioner at the Mountain West Conference, was extended through 2004.

The Sun Belt Conference appointed Judy Willson as assistant commissioner, effective July 1. The conference also announced the resignation of Kevin DeRamus, who had been service bureau director.

ASSOCIATIONS

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America hired Allison Koester as assistant director of communications. Koester was an intern with the organization in 1999-00.

Sandra L. Vivas, executive director of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, announced her resignation, effective July 31. Vivas, who has been with the organization since July 8, 1983, will continue in an interim capacity through December 31.

Charles Nagle, former assistant athletics director at Eastern Michigan and associate athletics director at Bowling Green, was chosen as director of executive placement at General Sports and Entertainment, a sports marketing and management company in Rochester, Michigan.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Enforcement representative Shawn Moore resigned.

Sherry Neeb resigned as training/commuications specialist.

CORRECTIONS

The headline for the Division I Women's Tennis Championships in the June 5 issue of The NCAA News incorrectly stated that Georgia won its second consecutive team title. Georgia has won two team championships in tennis, but Stanford was the champion in 1999.

One of the conferences where Carl McAloose formerly served as an athletics administrator was incorrectly listed in the The Record section in the June 5 issue of The NCAA News. McAloose was associate commissioner of the Big South Conference from 1992 to1996.

In the Division III Softball Championship results listed in the June 5 issue of The NCAA News, the line score for Game No. 10 of the championship series appeared incorrectly. The correct version is as follows:

Jen Adams was chosen as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in the sport of lacrosse for 1999-00. The program's board of directors voted last June to add lacrosse to the sports it considers for Honda Award and Collegiate Woman of the Year recognition. Selected as the Atlantic Coast Conference player of the year, Adams helped Maryland earn its sixth consecutive national championship.

Stanford's Marissa Irvin was named as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in the sport of tennis. Irvin, a sophomore, was this year's Pacific-10 Conference player of the year and runner-up in the Division I women's singles championship.

Keisha Spencer, a senior LSU track and field student-athlete, was named as the Honda Award winner as the top collegiate woman in her sport for 1999-00. Spencer earned the Southeastern Conference indoor and outdoor triple jump championships as well as the NCAA national indoor and outdoor triple jump titles. She also finished second in the long jump during the conference outdoor meet.

Jayne Even, the North Central Conference's basketball player of the year, was chosen as the Honda Award winner as the NCAA Division II Collegiate Woman Athlete of the Year. Even, a senior forward at North Dakota State, led the conference in scoring and helped the squad to an appearance in the Division II national championship game.

DEATHS

Texas A&M football player Terry Nichols died in a traffic accident May 27. Nichols, 21, was a reserve defensive lineman and competed in every game during his first two seasons.

Former Bradley basketball player, Mack Herndon died recently at the age of 61. Herndon helped Bradley win a National Invitation Tournament championship and later competed at the semi-professional level.

Gary Castaline, an athletics administrator at Rutgers, died of cancer May 13. Castaline, 45, joined the Rutgers athletics department in 1981 as head of ticket operations and most recently had been associate athletics director at the school and directed events and operations for all of Rutgers' athletics facilities.
