Tennessee's Harris announces retirement

Haywood Harris, associate athletics director for media relations at Tennessee, announced his retirement. Harris served as the school's sports information director for 26 years and assistant athletics director for three years before being promoted to associate athletics director.

Harris will continue to work part-time with the athletics department by fulfilling duties as special assistant to the athletics director and maintaining the department's archives. He also will work in some capacity at basketball and football games.

Harris is a 1984 inductee of the College Sports Information Directors Association Hall of Fame. He earned that organization's highest honor, the Arch Ward award, in 1991, and recently was chosen as a member of the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame. In 1982, Harris was selected as one of the nation's top five publicists by Inside Sports Magazine.

The two-time president of the Southeastern Conference publicity directors association earned a bachelor's degree in history and political science from Tennessee in 1951.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Stanford appointed John L. Hennessy as president, effective September 1. Hennessy, who has been provost at the school since June, succeeds Gerhard Casper ... Calvin W. Lowe was selected as president at Bowie State. Lowe has been vice-president for research and dean of the graduate college at Hampton ... Northern Illinois chose John G. Peters as president. Peters most recently has fulfilled responsibilities as provost and senior vice-chancellor at Tennessee ... Stephen Privett was appointed as president at San Francisco. Most recently Privett has been provost and vice-president for academic affairs at Santa Clara ... Beloit selected John E. Burris, director and chief executive officer at the Marine Biological Laboratory, as president, effective in August ... Samuel A. Kirkpatrick accepted the appointment to president at Eastern Michigan. Kirkpatrick, a former president at Texas-San Antonio, has been senior fellow at American Association of State Colleges and Universities ... Bucknell named Steffen H. Rogers as president, effective July 1. Rogers has fulfilled responsibilities as vice-president for academic affairs and provost at Clemson ... Richard J. Scaldini was chosen as president at Hiram. Scaldini has been president, chief executive officer and director of the Washington Campus.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Timothy J. Dillon was appointed as director of athletics at Canisius to succeed Daniel P. Starr. Dillon currently is president of Jotimaz Group, an event management firm in Anchorage, Alaska ... Walt Nadzak, athletics director at The Citadel for the past 15 years, announced retirement plans, effective June 30 ... Saint Anselm appointed Ed Cannon as athletics director. Cannon has been serving as acting athletics director ... Robert Morris appointed Susan Hofacre as athletics director, effective June 2, to replace Bruce Corrie. Hofacre has served as the school's senior woman administrator for the past 11 years ... Texas Southern appointed Enos Cabell as interim athletics director ... Southern Utah athletics director Jack Bishop announced plans to retire, effective June 30. Bishop, who has been athletics director since 1989, also served 15 years as head football coach, including seven in a dual capacity as director of athletics ... Dennis Roland, athletics director and head football coach at Southwest Baptist, was awarded a three-year contract extension. Roland has served as athletics director since 1998 and head football coach for the past two seasons ... Randy Day was appointed as athletics director at Brigham Young-Hawaii, effective April 21. Day has most recently served as assistant athletics director at the school and succeeds Ken Wagner, who has been athletics director and head men's basketball coach for the past eight years. Wagner will retain head coaching duties.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Kathy Turpin resigned as senior woman administrator/associate athletics director at Truman State, effective June 30. Turpin has been with the school's athletics department for six years.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Massachusetts-Dartmouth hired Mary Lou Thimas as associate director of athletics. Thimas has been a senior assistant commissioner at the Eastern College Athletic Conference ... Angela Taylor, senior associate director of athletics at Nevada, accepted duties as director of alumni relations at the school, effective May 1. Taylor succeeds Jeff Ardito ... Hamilton named David Thompson as associate director of athletics, effective at the end of the 2001-02 academic year ... Bud Ford was elevated to associate athletics director, sports information, at Tennessee. Ford, who has been with the athletics department since 1964, most recently has fulfilled assistant athletics director duties.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Trinity (Texas) chose Jacob Tingle as assistant director of athletics for recreational sports ... Dean Buchan was chosen as assistant athletics director for media relations at Wake Forest ... Kevin Koerwitz was hired as assistant athletics director for marketing, promotions and community outreach at Colorado College, effective May 1. Koerwitz has been an assistant in Wyoming's athletics marketing department since July of 1998 ... Denver's Dave Mellin resigned as assistant athletics director for media relations ... Springfield selected Dana Rieger as assistant director of athletics. Rieger has been associate director of Rutgers' Scarlet R Club ... Vanderbilt named Chris Wyrick as assistant athletics director for development.

COACHES

Baseball assistant -- Mark Fuller was chosen as an assistant coach at Auburn, effective after the 2000 season.

Men's basketball -- Leonard Hamilton, head coach at Miami (Florida), was awarded a seven-year contract through 2006-07. Hamilton has led the program since 1990 ... Delaware Valley hired Bob Simmons as head coach. Simmons, who succeeds Bill Dooley, has been an assistant at Lebanon Valley for the past four years ... Travis Ford was selected as head coach at Eastern Kentucky, succeeding Scott Perry. For the past three seasons, Ford has served as head coach at Campbellsville University ... Eastern Washington selected Ray Giacoletti as head coach to succeed Steve Aggers, who became head coach at Loyola Marymount. Giacoletti has been head coach at North Dakota State for the past three seasons and has been an assistant coach at Wichita State since March 13 ... Paul Hewitt was hired as head coach at Georgia Tech. Hewitt, who replaces Bobby Cremins, built a three-year record of 71-27 as head coach at Siena ... Incarnate Word awarded head coaching duties to Al Grushkin ... Barry Collier was appointed as head coach at Nebraska. Collier, who has led the Butler program for 11 seasons, succeeds Danny Nee ... Thad M. Matta was elevated to head coach at Butler. Matta, who succeeds Barry Collier, has been the top assistant with the program for three seasons ... Dennis Nutt was hired as head coach at Southwest Texas to succeed Mike Miller, who became an assistant at Kansas State. Nutt has spent the past five seasons as an assistant at Arkansas State ... Colorado State promoted two-year assistant coach Dale Layer to head coach. Layer succeeds Ritchie McKay ... Dennis Getzlaff, head coach at Concordia-St. Paul, was elevated to director of athletics for promotions and events ... Darryl Jacobs was awarded head coaching responsibilities at Felician. Men's basketball assistants -- Cristo Ortega was appointed as assistant men's coach at San Francisco State ... Buffalo hired Michael Mennenga as a full-time assistant coach. Mennenga has been an assistant at Maine for the past four seasons ... Texas-San Antonio promoted Roland Ware to assistant coach ... Kansas State selected Jimmy Elgas as basketball administrative assistant.

Women's basketball -- Baylor hired Kim Mulkey-Robertson as head coach. Mulkey-Robertson, who succeeds Sonja Hogg, has been an assistant at Louisiana Tech for 15 years ... Tulane head coach Lisa Stockton was awarded a six-year contract extension ... Annette Wiles was hired as head coach at Fort Hays State, replacing Tom Mahon. Wiles has been coaching at Bethany College in Lindsborg, Kansas, for the past seven seasons ... Kelly Graves was appointed as head coach at Gonzaga ... Southwest Baptist extended by three years the contract of head coach Jim Middleton, who has led the program for the past six seasons ... Beth Palmer resigned as head coach at Texas Woman's. ... Teri Moren was selected as head coach at Indianapolis ... Temple hired Dawn Staley as head coach. Staley, who replaces Kristen Foley, has been playing professionally in the Women's National Basketball Association and also is a member of the United States National Team.

Women's basketball assistants -- South Florida named Jose Fernandez as an assistant coach ... Terry Fowler was named as an assistant coach at South Alabama.

Men's and women's cross country -- Solomon Kaptum Arap Chebor accepted duties as head coach at Bloomfield. Most recently Chebor has been events coordinator and supervisor of athletics facilities and equipment at Fairleigh Dickinson ... Indiana/Purdue-Indianapolis awarded head men's and women's coaching duties to Scott Williams. Williams, who has been head boys' cross country coach at Ben Davis High Schol in Indianapolis, Indiana, for the past nine years, replaces Reuben Hjau ... Mark Misch was hired as head men's and women's coach at Southwest Baptist to replace Darin Archer. Misch spent July 1998 to January 2000 as a graduate assistant coach for distance runners at Fort Hays State.

Men's and women's diving -- UC Irvine awarded head men's and women's coaching responsibilities to Curt Wilson, effective May 8. Wilson, who replaces Conni Pomeroy, has been head diving coach at Saddleback College and is a voting member of the senior rules committee for United States Diving.

Field hockey -- Delaware State hired Jenn Wolfgang as head field hockey and assistant softball coach to replace Meghann Mannino, who resigned ... Rebecca Begley was hired as head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts). For the past two seasons, Begley has been assistant field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at Denison.

Football -- Chris Phelps resigned as head coach at Siena to become an offensive assistant at New Hampshire.

Football assistants -- Kentucky named Janetta Owens as director of player development for football ... Jon Heacock was added as defensive coordinator at Youngstown State ... Curry named Brian Lee as offensive line coach and Todd Roberts as receivers coach ... Brad Soucie and Scott Didrickson were hired as assistant coaches at Oregon State ... Michigan Tech hired John Lindley as an assistant coach. For the past two seasons, Lindley has served as defensive coordinator at New Jersey City ... Mike Fanoga was added as defensive line coach and Bill Mottola was added as offensive line coach at Western Kentucky. Fanoga has been an assistant at Kentucky since 1996, and Mottola has been with Army since 1995 ... Elon chose Mark Speir as running backs coach and recruiting coordinator and elevated Henry Trevathan to associate head coach. Speir has been defensive line coach at Presbyterian for the past three years, and Trevathan has been offensive coordinator at Elon for the past four years ... Luke Fickell was awarded defensive line coaching duties at Akron. Fickell, who was a graduate assistant coach at Ohio State in 1999, replaces John Reagan ... Texas Southern appointed Prince Pearson as offensive line coach, Terry Sims as running backs coach, Jarrett Harper as wide receivers coach and J.W. Harper as defensive line coach. The school also appointed defensive coordinator Kenwick Thompson as assistant head coach ... James Salgado was appointed as an assistant coach at Northeastern ... Trinity (Connecticut) chose Sean Spencer as an assistant coach, fitness coordinator and physical education instructor. For the past 15 months, Spencer has fulfilled the position's responsibilities on an interim basis ... Dartmouth selected John Perry as offensive coordinator and Ed Walsh as defensive line coach. The school also elevated Pat O'Leary to assistant head coach and Robert Talley to defensive coordinator ... Tom Freeman was chosen as offensive coordinator at Pittsburgh ... Fort Hays State selected Bryan Maring as offensive coordinator and backfield coach ... Lynn Cain was hired as defensive backs coach at Southwest Baptist. Cain has been defensive backs and running backs coach at Chattahoochee High School in Atlanta since 1997 ... Jim Henson was chosen as defensive coordinator at Saint Joseph's (Indiana) to succeed Joe Tousignaut. Since 1995, Henson has been inside linebackers, wide receivers and special teams coach at West Liberty State ... Wofford elevated Nate Woody to defensive coordinator. Woody has been serving as linebackers coach ... Scott Freeney was hired as wide receivers coach and Mark Hulet was appointed as defensive coordinator at St. Cloud State. Freeney spent from 1997 to 1999 as a graduate assistant at Purdue. Hulet served as St. Cloud State's defensive coordinator last season on a temporary one-year contract.

Men's and women's golf -- Texas A&M-Corpus Christi chose Ian Freret as head women's coach to succeed Brian Loeffler. Freret also will be assistant golf professional at King's Crossing Golf and Country Club ... Stephen Diemoz was named head men's and women's coach at Roger Williams ... Kate Burnett was chosen as men's and women's head coach at Anderson. Burnett succeeds Jackie Seawell ... Nichols named Mike Serijan head coach to succeed Andre Brisson. Serijan has spent two years as the school's sports information director and one year as the school's media relations director ... Hofstra selected Sean Garvey as head women's coach ... Princeton named William W. Green as head men's coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Minnesota State-Mankato promoted Troy Jutting to head men's coach to replace Don Brose, who retired after 30 years. Jutting has spent the last 10 seasons as an assistant with the program ... Scott Sandelin was chosen as head men's coach at Minnesota-Duluth. Sandelin has been associate head coach at North Dakota for the past three years ... Don Cahoon accepted duties as head coach at Massachusetts.

Men's soccer -- Notre Dame (Maryland) elevated Jay Golomb to head coach. Golomb, who succeeds Len Malinowski, has been assistant/goalkeeper coach at Notre Dame for three years ... Shawn Griffin was hired to succeed Willi Steinrotter as head coach at Hobart. Griffin has spent the last eight seasons as head coach at Plymouth State ... Christopher Yeager was appointed as head coach at Hiram ... Illinois Wesleyan hired Steve Berry as head men's and women's coach. Berry, who replaces Tony Bankston, has coached boys' and girls' soccer and boys' basketball at the high-school level.

Women's soccer -- Martha Brousseau was named as head coach at Springfield. Last year, Brousseau served as an assistant coach at Amherst ... Hiram hired Nicole Barbuto as head women's soccer coach and assistant track coach ... Andy Richards was chosen as head coach at Bowling Green. For the past five seasons, Richards has been an assistant women's soccer coach at Oregon State ... Bo Conroy was awarded head coaching duties at Carleton.

Softball assistant -- Trina Valencia was awarded assistant coaching duties at San Francisco State.

Men's and women's swimming -- Colgate named William Roberts as head men's and women's coach ... Clarion head men's and women's coach Bill Miller announced retirement plans. Miller has led the men's program for 22 seasons and the women's program for 13 seasons.

Men's and women's tennis -- Springfield awarded head women's coaching duties to Conrad McIntire. For the past three seasons, McIntire has been head girls' coach at Fermi High School in Enfield, Connecticut.

Men's and women's track and field -- Leroy Thomas was selected as head men's and women's cross country and track coach at Anderson to replace Doug Martin.

Track and field assistants -- Kenny McDaniel was selected as assistant track and field coach at San Francisco State ... New York University hired Moti Margolin as men's assistant coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Muhlenberg selected Jenny Warmack-Chipman as head coach. Warmack-Chipman, an assistant at Southern Methodist for the past three seasons, succeeds interim head coach Paula Reed, who will continue as an assistant with the program ... Don Shaw, head women's coach at Stanford, announced a personal leave of absence until January 1, 2001. The school appointed Denise Corlett, associate head coach, as interim head coach. Corlett has been with the program for 11 seasons.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- Jenny Wilson was added as an assistant coach at Kent. Wilson was an assistant at Louisiana-Monroe for two seasons ... Joe Getzin was named assistant volleyball coach at South Carolina ... Kansas' Jan Madlock resigned after four years as an assistant coach to accept a post with the Kansas Youth Advocate Program.

STAFF

Communications -- David Grim was chosen as Internet communications director at Tennessee.

Communications assistant -- Derek Hartl was selected as assistant director of athletics communications and marketing at Michigan Tech. Hartl has been a graduate assistant at St. Cloud State since June 1999.

Compliance -- Akron promoted George Van Horne to director of compliance-event manager. Van Horne has been serving in an interim capacity for the last year ... Cindy Rear, head women's volleyball coach at Southwest Baptist, accepted additional duties as assistant director of compliance.

Equipment assistant -- Kevin Carneiro was hired as assistant equipment room and facility supervisor at Springfield. Carneiro has been facility and contest manager at Wesleyan for the past eight years.

Sports information -- Ted Hallisey resigned as sports information director at San Francisco State to become an on-air personality and anti-tobacco spokesperson with Clear Channel Communications ... Creighton added Michael Molde as sports information director. Molde most recently has been assistant sports information director at Northern Illinois.

Sports information assistants -- San Francisco State chose Mike Bond as assistant sports information director ... Todd Lamb was named as assistant sports information director at Clemson ... Tennessee elevated Jeff Muir to associate sports information director ... Thomas Machamer was appointed as assistant sports information director at Hartford, effective April 11. Machamer, who has been assistant sports information director at Elon for the past year, succeeds Jason Guy ... Springfield awarded assistant sports information director responsibilities to Tim Volkmann. During the 1998-99 season, Volkmann served as sports information director at Oneonta State.

Strength and conditioning -- Eastern Kentucky added Jeff Barnard as strength and conditioning coach. Since July 1997, Barnard has been an assistant strength and conditioning coach at Wake Forest.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- Thomas Stucky was named as assistant strength and conditioning coach at Auburn.

CONFERENCES

The Ohio Athletic Conference selected Julie Work as director of information. Work currently is an intern in the Baldwin-Wallace sports information office.

ASSOCIATIONS

The Athletic Equipment Managers Association elected Dale Strauf as president. Strauf has been head athletics equipment manager at Cornell since 1979.

NOTABLES

Cristina Teuscher was selected as the Honda Award winner for swimming and diving for 1999-00. The award is presented annually to the top woman collegiate athlete in the her sport. This year Teuscher, a senior at Columbia, captured NCAA titles in the 400-meter freestyle and 400-meter individual medley.

Texas women's basketball guard/forward Edwina Brown was named winner of the Margaret Wade Trophy, presented to the national player of the year. Brown, a senior sport management major, also was selected as a member of the 1999-00 Kodak all-America team.

Pomona-Pitzer head women's tennis coach Ann Lebedeff was awarded the 1999 Tennis Educational Merit Award, which is presented annually to a male and female U.S. citizen or resident who has made notable contributions to the national tennis education field.

D.J. Trahan and Lindsey Wright were named as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for March. Trahan, who is a freshman at Clemson, won the Las Vegas Intercollegiate, and Wright, a freshman at Pepperdine, won individual medalist honors at the Pioneer Electronics Bruin Classic.

Kenyon Martin, senior basketball player at Cincinnati, was announced as the John R. Wooden Award honoree. Martin, a three-time defensive player of the year in Conference USA, also has earned recognition as player of the year from the Associated Press, the Atlanta Tipoff Club and the United States Basketball Writers Association.

The 2000 Hobey Baker Memorial Award recognizing the top Division I college hockey player in the United States was presented to Mike Mottau, a senior communications major at Boston College. Mottau, who also was named as Hockey East Co-Player of the Year and Defensive Defenseman of the Year, was team captain and helped the squad to an appearance in the national championship game of the NCAA Frozen Four.

Connecticut's Shea Ralph, junior guard/
forward, was selected as the Honda Award winner for basketball as the top woman collegiate athlete in her sport for 1999-00. Ralph, who also earned recognition as Big East player of the year, led the team in scoring and helped Connecticut capture the 2000 Division I women's national championship.

DEATHS

Bob Blackman, former head football coach at Cornell, Illinois and Dartmouth, died March 17. He was 81.

Former Kansas head basketball coach Dick Harp died March 18 at the age of 81.

Former Pacific (Oregon) head baseball coach Charles Bafaro passed away recently of a heart attack. He was 71. Bafaro led the baseball program for 31 years, beginning in 1963.

Ralph Hargett, a former head men's golf coach at Wingate, died February 27. He was 64. Hargett came to Wingate in 1992 after coaching and teaching in the public school system in North Carolina. He spent one season volunteering as an assistant with the men's basketball team before leading the men's golf program for eight seasons.

Former Texas athletics administrator Bill Ellington died April 6. Ellington, 79, joined the program as an assistant football coach in 1959. He was assistant to the athletics director from 1965 to 1968 and was promoted to assistant athletics director in 1968. Ellington assumed director of athletics duties in 1979, a position he held until his retirement in 1981.

Jacksonville football player Ricardo Tillman died April 10 from complications from a stabbing on March 19. He was 20. Tillman, a sophomore communications major, competed in all nine games last season and had 32 receptions for 474 yards.
