Smeltzly to retire as Florida Southern AD

Hal Smeltzly has announced plans to retire as Florida Southern's director of athletics, effective June 1.

Smeltzly joined the Florida Southern athletics department as head baseball coach in 1957. During his tenure, he led squads to national championships in 1971, 1972 and 1975. In 1972, he earned recognition as coach of the year. The former chair of the NCAA Baseball Committee, Smeltzly accepted additional responsibilities as athletics director in 1972 and retired from coaching in 1976 with a 391-166 career record.

On the international level, Smeltzly played a significant role in establishing baseball as a gold-medal sport at the Olympics in 1992. He also was involved with the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games.

A member of the Florida Sportswriters Association, Sunshine State Conference and Florida Southern College Baseball Halls of Fame, Smeltzly is a 1957 graduate of Florida Southern, where he was a student-athlete.

GENERAL

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Larry L. Travis announced plans to retire as athletics director at Western Carolina, effective next June. Travis has held the position since April 1992 ... Santa Clara athletics director Carroll Williams announced retirement plans, effective no later than July 1. Williams, who has held the position for eight years, will continue at the school in a part-time athletics fund-raising and alumni relations post ... Marian selected Doug Hammonds as athletics director. Hammonds, who has been serving in an interim capacity since June 1999, will continue as head women's volleyball coach and will relinquish assistant men's basketball coaching duties.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Roberta Page was named associate athletics director at Shippensburg. Page, who succeeds Jane Goss, has been athletics director and assistant principal with the South Middleton School District ... Moses Lewis III was chosen as associate director of athletics for development at Kent ... New Mexico's Linda Estes announced plans to retire as associate athletics director, effective at the end of the school year. Estes has been with the school for 31 years and has been an athletics administrator since 1973 ... Southern Illinois hired Cynthia K. Jones as associate athletics director to succeed Charlotte West, who retired in July 1998. Jones has been senior legal counsel at Bond, Schoeneck and King for six years and will continue with the law firm in a consulting role.

ASSISTANT DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Frostburg State hired Chris McKnight as assistant athletics director and head baseball coach. Since 1990, McKnight has been associate athletics director at Dowling.

COACHES

Baseball -- Bernard Baruch head coach Buddy Heffernan resigned. The school named Scott Losche as head coach ... Southern Utah head coach Dave Powell resigned. Pitching coach Kurt Palmer was elevated to interim coach.

Baseball assistants -- Basil Tarasko, Jerry Sidman and Frank Dursi were added as assistants at Bernard Baruch ... Matt Rush was awarded assistant coaching duties at Dallas ... Dave Baker was hired as an assistant at Central (Iowa) ... Don Schaffer was added as an assistant coach at Teikyo Post.

Men's basketball -- Samford awarded head coach Jimmy Tillette a seven-year contract through the 2007 season. Tillette is in his third season as head coach ... Bruce Weber, head coach at Southern Illinois, accepted a four-year contract extension.

Men's basketball assistants -- North Florida appointed Dean Murray as a volunteer assistant coach ... Missouri-Rolla assistant Michael McClain resigned, and the school appointed Don Morris as interim assistant coach.

Women's basketball -- Brenda Davis resigned as head coach at Rose-Hulman, effective at the end of the 1999-00 season ... Michigan State head coach Karen Langeland announced her retirement, effective at the end of the 1999-00 season. Langeland has led the program for 24 years and will assume assistant athletics director duties after her retirement from coaching.

Women's basketball assistants -- Deren Boyd was chosen as interim assistant coach at Oklahoma to replace Kristi Hayes, who resigned because of her mother's illness. Hayes has been an assistant with the program for seven months.

Men's and women's cross country -- Molloy named Rau Gilliam as head coach.

Field hockey -- Kathy Railey was selected as field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at Eastern Connecticut State. Railey has spent the last two years as head field hockey and assistant women's lacrosse coach at Goucher. She replaces Pamela Dominic as field hockey coach.

Football -- Colorado School of Mines hired Bob Stitt as head coach ... James Reese was chosen as head coach at Tennessee State ... Penn State awarded Joe Paterno a five-year contract extension through 2004. Paterno has been head coach for 35 years ... June Jones accepted a three-year contract extension at Hawaii ... Monmouth hired Stephen Bell as head coach to replace Kelly Kane. Bell has been offensive coordinator at MacMurray for five years ... Doug Adkins accepted head coaching responsibilities at Humboldt State. Adkins, who has been defensive line coach at Nevada, succeeds Fred Whitmire ... Trinity (Connecticut) appointed Charles F. Priore as head coach, replacing interim head coach Bill Decker. Priore has been offensive line coach and offensive coordinator at Pennsylvania since 1992, and in 1999 he was awarded additional duties as assistant head coach ... Wooster head coach Jim Barnes resigned to join the Augustana (Illinois) football program as head coach. Barnes has been head coach at Wooster for five seasons ... St. Mary's (California) released head coach Mike Rasmussen ... Kean appointed Joe Loth as head coach.

Football assistants -- Jeff Grimes was awarded duties as offensive line coach at Boise State ... Temple selected Charlie Fisher as offensive coordinator ... Chad Braun was named defensive coordinator and strength coach at Monmouth. For the past three seasons, Braun has been defensive coordinator at MacMurray ... Dan Cozzetto and Cornell Jackson resigned as assistants at Arizona State. Cozzetto was offensive coordinator for eight seasons and will be wide receivers coach at Oregon State. Jackson served as running backs coach ... Hawaii appointed Kevin Lempa as defensive coordinator ... Bill Lacey was selected as offensive coordinator at Sacred Heart ... Findlay hired Ron Curtis as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, Dale Williams as offensive line coach and Robert Keys as defensive backs and special teams coach ... Steven Wilks was named as defensive backs coach at Illinois State ... Villanova selected Joe Trainer as defensive coordinator and Clayton Carlin as an assistant coach ... The school also announced that defensive line coach Dick Bumpas will be co-defensive coordinator with safeties coach Mark Stoops ... Cory Bailey was awarded assistant coaching duties at Iona ... Miami (Ohio) appointed Taver Johnson as linebackers coach, Joe Palcic as defensive backs coach, Jim Wachenheim as assistant head coach and running backs coach, and Jon Wauford as defensive coordinator. The school also promoted Ron Johnson to associate head coach and special teams coach. Johnson had been assistant head coach and running backs coach.

Men's and women's golf -- Northwestern awarded head coach Pat Goss a multiyear contract extension.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Bryan Valladares was appointed as head men's coach at Misericordia. The program is scheduled to begin competition in the spring of 2001.

Men's soccer -- Hobart head coach Willi Steinrotter announced retirement plans ... Utica/Rome hired P.J. Gondek as head coach. Gondek has most recently been an assistant men's coach at Plattsburgh State ... Albany (New York) chose Johan Aarnio as head coach to replace Roy Pfeil. Aarnio served as head men's and women's soccer coach at Rensselaer from 1992 to 1997 ... Cesar Markovic accepted head coaching responsibilities at St. Peter's to replace John Calcaterra, who resigned. For the past five years, Markovic has been head men's coach at Hunter ... Douglas Baylis was selected as head coach at Molloy ... Jeff Enquist resigned as head coach at Pacific (Oregon) to accept a position as full-time director of the Portland City United Soccer Club. Enquist, who has been head coach since 1992, served as the club's director on a part-time basis for three years.

Men's soccer assistants -- Bob Parris was appointed as an assistant at Stonehill ... Molloy appointed John Ramirez as an assistant coach.

Women's soccer -- Eastern Connecticut State head coach Matt Paton resigned after six years to become women's soccer assistant at Colorado. Paton replaces Dang Pibulvech at Colorado ... Mississippi State named Neil McGuire as head coach ... Jack Shafer was awarded head coaching responsibilities at Widener, succeeding Stephanie McGuinness. Shafer has been head men's and women's soccer coach at Lycoming for the past four seasons ... Chris D'Ambrosio accepted duties as interim head coach at Eastern Connecticut State.

Softball -- JoAnn Gordon was selected as head softball coach and head women's volleyball coach at Thiel. Since 1991, Gordon has served as assistant softball coach at Kent State ... Molloy awarded head coaching duties to John Montefusco.

Swimming -- Penn State-Behrend hired Josh Heynes as interim head men's and women's swimming and water polo coach.

Softball assistants -- Bob Cozzetto and Beth Hein were added as assistants at Molloy.

Men's and women's tennis -- Susan Bernardi was awarded head women's coaching responsibilities at Siena ... Virginia Tech's Anne Jones Thompson resigned as head women's coach, effective June 30.

Men's and women's track and field -- Jennifer Buckley was named as head men's and women's coach at Misericordia. The program is scheduled to begin competition in the spring of 2001.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Saint Joseph's (Indiana) hired Sylvia Kline as an assistant coach. Since 1994, Kline has been boys' varsity cross country coach at Boonville (Indiana) High School ... Mike Moats, Eric Pingel and Stephen Fyfe were added as assistant men's and women's coaches at Central (Iowa) ... Dave Krueger resigned as an assistant at Montana. The school added Ben Laird as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Montana chose Nikki Best as head women's coach to replace Dick Scott, who resigned. For the past four seasons, Best has been an assistant coach at Nebraska ... Ohio chose Mike Lessinger as head women's coach.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Prentice Perkins was chosen as a women's assistant coach at Florida. Perkins, who succeeds Staci Wolfe, spent the 1999 season as an assistant coach at Oregon ... Adrienne Delph was appointed as an assistant women's coach at Troy State.

STAFF

Athletic trainer -- Lawrence chose Erin Buenzli as head athletic trainer. Buenzli has been assistant athletic trainer and employee wellness coordinator at Grinnell since August 1998.

Business manager -- Brian Murray accepted athletics business manager responsibilities at Villanova.

Communications -- Georgia Tech appointed Mike Stamus as director of communications to replace Mike Finn. Stamus has been an assistant sports information director at the school for 16 years. The school also promoted Allison George to senior associate director of communications.

Compliance -- Villanova selected Toni Purnell as compliance coordinator ... David Potter was named as athletics compliance coordinator at McNeese State. Most recently, Potter has been assistant athletics director for compliance and academics at Texas-Pan American.

Development -- Eileen Pfeiffer was appointed as director of athletics development at Albany (New York).

Marketing -- Army selected Mike Waddell as director of marketing ... Kent appointed Steve Sefner as director of marketing.

Media services -- Jamie Klund was named as director of media services at Nevada.

Sports information -- Vicki Greenbaum was named as sports information director at Nova Southeastern. Greenbaum most recently served as a media relations assistant with the Orange Bowl Committee ... Joe Vanden Acker was appointed as sports information director at Lawrence to replace JoJo DePagter, who was serving in an interim capacity. Most recently, Vanden Acker has been a sportswriter and assistant sports editor with the Oshkosh Northwestern newspaper ... Marist named Kimberly Zivkovich as sports information director ... Lee Glenn was named as director of sports information at Methodist.

Sports information assistant -- Cal Poly hired Brian Thurmond as assistant sports information director. For the past five years, Thurmond has been a volunteer assistant in the school's sports information office.

CONFERENCES

Julie Christie resigned as director of marketing-properties at the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Julie Griffin was selected as interim director of marketing-properties.

ASSOCIATIONS

The Division III Commissioners Association selected Steven F. Ulrich as president. The organization also appointed Steve Argo, Dick Rasmussen, Tim Gleason and Gary Karner to the executive committee.

USA Baseball appointed Paul Seiler as executive director/CEO. Seiler has been serving in an interim role. The organization also announced Eric Campbell as associate director of national teams to succeed Steven Cohen, who has been selected as USA Baseball's director, national teams. The following individuals have had official title changes: Jerry Kindall, senior advisor, national teams; Dave Fanucchi, director, communications; Ray Darwin, associate director, business development; David Perkins, associate director, business development; and Miki Partridge, director, finance.

MISCELLANEOUS

Athletics directors and scheduling supervisors are invited to get on a mailing list for the 15th edition (2001-05) of Casale's Master Sports Schedule Book. The schedule book was developed and patented by the late Ernest C. Casale, former athletics director at Temple, and has been used by hundreds of college and high-school athletics directors since its first printing in 1973. CORRECTION

A graphic supporting an article regarding diversity issues in the January 31 edition of The NCAA News incorrectly stated that Jaqueline Campbell works for the Big East Conference. Campbell is in fact the assistant commissioner for compliance at the Atlantic 10 Conference.

NOTABLES

Ron Dayne, Wisconsin football player and 2000 Heisman Trophy winner, was named as the Doak Walker Award winner as the nation's top collegiate running back.

Former football player Archie Griffin was presented with the Legends Award. Griffin is the only player to capture the Heisman Trophy twice.

Bentley head field hockey coach Kelly West was named as the 1999 Dita/National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division II coach of the year. West, who has led the program for five seasons, guided the 1999 squad to a 21-1 mark and an appearance in the national championship game.

Following are the recipients of the 1999 Woody Hayes National Scholar-Athlete Award, presented to a male and female athlete in each division for demonstrated excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership: Division I -- Brian Syska, Wright State, soccer, pre-medicine; Jill Meyers, Massachusetts, volleyball, political science and English. Division II -- Adam Vossen, Morehead State, football, pre-medicine; Theresa Lang, North Dakota State, basketball, business. Division III -- Craig Pierstorff, Wisconsin-Oshkosh, football, pre-medicine; Monica Bradley, Drew, field hockey and lacrosse, religious studies.

DEATHS

Greg Anderson, former Montana football player, died of a heart attack at the age of 46. Anderson, who was an Illinois state police officer, competed with Montana for four years as a defensive back. He went on to spend two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League and one season in the Canadian Football League.

Mike Berticelli, head men's soccer coach at Notre Dame, died January 25 of an apparent heart attack. Berticelli, 48, had led the Notre Dame program since 1990, and he formerly coached at Old Dominion and North Carolina-Greensboro.

Former Pratt Institute athletics director Joan M. Payne died January 27. Payne was a member of the school's athletics department for 30 years.
