Welsh retires as head coach at Virginai

Longtime Virginia head football coach George Welsh announced plans to retire at the end of the season. Virginia will appear in the Oahu Bowl December 24.

Hired as head coach in 1982, Welsh has guided the program to an overall record of 134-85-3. Before coming to Virginia, the Atlantic Coast Conference's winningest football coach was at the Navy helm for nine years. He also spent 10 years as an assistant at Penn State and two years as an assistant at Navy.

As an undergraduate at Navy, Welsh competed in football and baseball. A three-year starter at quarterback, Welsh helped lead Navy to a 1955 Sugar Bowl win. That same year, Welsh led the nation in passing and total offense, and finished third in the Heisman Trophy race.

Welsh, the winner of numerous coaching accolades, including Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year on multiple occasions, graduated from Navy in 1956.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Eastern New Mexico President Everett L. Frost announced plans to retire, effective July 31, 2001 ... Kermit L. Hall was named as president at Utah State, effective in January. Hall has been provost and vice-chancellor for academic affairs at North Carolina State ... Brown chose Ruth J. Simmons as president, effective July 1, 2001. Simmons has been president at Smith ... John D. Wiley was appointed as chancellor at Wisconsin. Wiley most recently has been serving as provost at the school ... Donna E. Shalala was chosen as president at Miami (Florida), effective June 2001. Shalala currently serves as Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

California's John Kasser resigned as athletics director to become executive director of Pac-10 Properties. Kasser has served as director of athletics since 1993. The school chose associate athletics director Robert Driscoll as acting athletics director ... A. Lee Roberts, director of athletics at Cortland State, announced his retirement, effective December 13. Roberts, who will be designated as director emeritus of athletics after retiring, has guided the Cortland State athletics department since 1987 ... Northwest Missouri State hired Robert Boerigter as director of athletics. Boerigter has been director of athletics, chair of the physical education department and professor of physical education at Hastings since 1988 ... Eastern Kentucky's Jeffrey Long resigned to assume duties as senior associate director of athletics at Oklahoma. Long has been at Eastern Kentucky since 1998 ... Bob Entzion resigned as athletics director at North Dakota State, effective December 31. Lynn Dorn, women's athletics director, will serve as athletics director on an interim basis.

COACHES

Baseball -- Albany (New York) elevated part-time head coach Jon Mueller to full-time status.

Men's basketball -- Dick Bennett, head coach at Wisconsin since 1995, announced his retirement. Bennett closes his career with a 453-258 mark, including a 93-69 record at Wisconsin. The school chose assistant coach Brad Soderberg as interim head coach ... Northern Illinois' Brian Hammel resigned as head coach. Hammel has guided the program since the 1991-92 season. Andy Greer, an assistant, will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Women's basketball -- Pittsburgh head coach Traci Waites was awarded a contract extension.

Men's and women's cross country -- Ellen O'Neil, head women's cross country coach and assistant track coach at Dartmouth, will take a leave of absence from January to June 2001. The school chose Kristin Manwaring as interim assistant track coach ... Carthage promoted men's assistant Brett Witt to head men's coach ... Kevin Iwanusa assumed duties as head men's and women's coach at Wingate. Iwanusa, who currently is working on a master's degree in business administration at the school, replaces Dennis Johnson.

Field hockey -- Kelley Kimball was selected as head field hockey and head women's lacrosse coach at Southern Connecticut State.

Football -- Southern California released Paul Hackett as head coach. Hired in 1997, Hackett guided the program to a 19-18 record during his tenure ... Rich Rodriguez was chosen as head coach at West Virginia, succeeding Don Nehlen, who retired. Rodriguez has spent the past two years as offensive coordinator and associate head coach at Clemson ... Wake Forest released head coach Jim Caldwell after eight seasons ... Carl Torbush was released as head coach at North Carolina. Torbush joined the program in 1988 as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach and was elevated to head coach in December 1997 ... Rutgers' Terry Shea resigned as head coach after five seasons ... Rip Scherer was released as head coach at Memphis. Scherer became head coach there in 1995 ... Morris Brown's Joe Crosby resigned as head coach ... Mississippi College chose Johnny Mills as head coach. Mills fulfilled the same duties on an interim basis during the 2000 season ... Maryland hired Ralph Friedgen as head coach. Friedgen most recently has been offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech and replaces Ron Vanderlinden ... Paul Guenther resigned as head coach at Ursinus ... Missouri chose Gary Pinkel as head coach, succeeding Larry Smith. Pinkel has guided the program at Toledo for 10 seasons ... Jim Hofher was selected as head coach at Buffalo after serving as quarterbacks coach at Syracuse for the past three years. Hofher succeeds Craig Cirbus ... Louisville awarded John L. Smith with an eight-year contract ... Rutgers hired Greg Schiano as head coach to replace Terry Shea. Schiano has been defensive coordinator at Miami (Florida) since 1999 ... Bobby Wallace, head coach at Temple since December 1997, signed a three-year contract extension through the 2005 season ... Memphis elevated Tommy West to head coach, replacing Rip Scherer. West, who has been defensive coordinator since 1999, formerly was head coach at Clemson from 1993 to 1998 ... Arizona hired John Mackovic as head coach, succeeding Dick Tomey, who resigned after 14 years as head coach. Mackovic has spent the past three years as a television football analyst at ESPN and formerly was head coach at Texas, Illinois and Wake Forest ... Urban Meyer, receivers coach at Notre Dame for the past five years, was chosen as head coach at Bowling Green. Meyer succeeds Gary Blackney ... Georgia released head coach Jim Donnan. ... David Cutcliffe, head coach at Mississippi, was awarded a two-year contract extension through the 2004 season. Cutcliffe has been head coach since 1998 and currently has a mark of 16-8 ... New Jersey City's Roy Miller resigned as head coach ... Mike Bellotti, head coach at Oregon, accepted a two-year contract extension through 2007. In six seasons, Bellotti has led the program to a 48-22 record ... San Jose State head coach Dave Baldwin will not return next season. Baldwin coached there for four seasons ... Dennis Franchione was hired as head coach at Alabama. Franchione most recently has guided Texas Christian ... Oregon State awarded head coach Dennis Erickson with a new seven-year contract. Erickson has built a 17-6 record since becoming head coach in January 1999 ... Notre Dame awarded head coach Bob Davie a five-year contract. Davie has built a 30-18 mark in four seasons. ... Bobby Wallace, head coach at Temple, signed a three-year contract extension. Wallace has served as head coach for three years ... Tulane awarded head coach Chris Scelfo a two-year contract extension through 2005 ... Brigham Young hired Gary Crowton as head coach. Crowton, who succeeds the retired LaVell Edwards, has spent the past two seasons as offensive coordinator for the NFL's Chicago Bears ... Rich Ellerson was named as head coach at Cal Poly. Replacing Larry Welsh, Ellerson has been defensive coordinator at Arizona for four seasons ... Millersville's Gene A. Carpenter announced retirement plans as head coach, effective February 15, 2001 ... Les Miles accepted responsibilities as head coach at Oklahoma State. For the past three years, Miles has been tight ends coach for the NFL's Dallas Cowboys ... Southern Illinois selected Jerry Kill as head coach, succeeding Jan Quarless, who was released. Kill has been head coach at Emporia State for two years ... Steve Spurrier, head coach at Florida, signed a four-year contract extension through 2006 ... Colorado's Gary Barnett accepted a two-year contract extension through 2005. Barnett has guided the team since 1999 ... Gary Patterson was promoted to head coach at Texas Christian. Patterson, who has served as defensive coordinator for the past three seasons, succeeds Dennis Franchione.

Football assistants -- Ardell Wiegandt was released as defensive coordinator and Walt Klinker was released as offensive line coach at Kansas ... Todd Middleton resigned as tight ends coach at Kansas ... Darrell Wyatt, wide receivers coach and assistant head coach at Kansas, was elevated to offensive coordinator and associate head coach ... Bill O'Brien was elevated to offensive coordinator at Georgia Tech. O'Brien, who replaces Ralph Friedgen, has been running backs coach for three years. ... Navy released Mike Vaught, offensive coordinator; Gene McKeehan, offensive line coach and recruiting coordinator; and Charles McMillian, secondary coach. The school also reassigned defensive coordinator Tim DeRuyter as a defensive position coach ... Joe DeLamielleure was released as tight ends coach at Duke ... Mac McWhorter, offensive line coach at Georgia Tech, was elevated to assistant head coach ... Louisiana-Monroe added Stan Humphries as offensive coordinator ... Maryland hired Charlie Taaffe as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, Gary Blackney as secondary coach and Dave Sollazzo as defensive tackles coach. Taaffe has been head coach of the Canadian Football League's Montreal Alouettes, and Blackney was head coach at Bowling Green from 1991 to 2000. For the past two years, Sollazzo has worked as defensive tackles coach at Georgia Tech ... Arizona retained Rob Ianello as recruiting coordinator and Duane Akina as defensive coordinator. The school also announced it will release Dino Babers, offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach; Charlie Dickey, assistant head coach and offensive line coach; Randy Robbins, running backs coach; Lawrence Livingston, tight ends coach and half backs coach; Marty Long, defensive line coach; Bob Wagner, special teams coordinator and inside linebackers coach; and David Fipp and Brent Brennan, graduate assistant coaches ... Arizona State selected Brent Guy as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, Jeff Grimes as offensive line coach, Dan Fidler as defensive backs and safeties coach, Mark Helfrich as quarterbacks coach, Darryl Jackson as wide receivers coach, Ted Monachino as defensive line coach and Tom Nordquist as running backs coach ... Missouri announced Andy Hill will continue as wide receivers coach. The school also appointed Tom Amstutz as assistant head coach and defensive coordinator, Dave Christensen as offensive coordinator and offensive line coach, Matt Eberflus as secondary coach, Cornell Ford as outside linebackers coach, Brian Jones as running backs coach, Craig Kuligowski as defensive line coach, Bruce Walker as tight ends and assistant offensive line coach and David Yost as quarterbacks coach and recruiting coordinator ... At Rutgers, Bill Cubit was chosen as offensive coordinator, Mike Miello was named as recruiting coordinator and running backs coach and Tony Pierce and Mark D'Onofrio were selected as defensive assistants. Cubit was offensive coordinator at Missouri and Miello has coached at the high-school level for 27 seasons. Pierce has worked as co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Wake Forest, and D'Onofrio served as a graduate assistant at Georgia during the 2000 season ... Utah linebackers coach Fred Whittingham will not return next season ... Tommy Lee, offensive coordinator at Utah, and Sean McNabb, running backs and special teams coach at the school, resigned. Lee has spent the past three seasons as offensive coordinator and has served as quarterbacks coach since 1995. McNabb has worked as an assistant at the school for the past 24 years and will continue in an administrative post until June 30.

Men's and women's golf -- Katie Weiss was named as head women's coach at East Tennessee State. Weiss has played golf professionally for the past two years on the SBC Futures Tour and The Players West Professional Golf Tour.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Western Michigan awarded head men's coach Jim Culhane with a two-year contract extension through April 30, 2004.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Shannon Mercier assumed duties as head women's coach at Stevens Tech.

Men's soccer -- Patrick Farmer resigned as head coach at Penn State.

Women's soccer -- Terri Patraw resigned as head coach at Arizona State, effective at the end of the 2000 fall semester. Patraw has led the program to a 50-42-3 record in five seasons ... Hartford selected Ewa Bergsten as head coach ... UC Riverside named Veronica O'Brien as head coach. The program is scheduled to begin competition during the 2001-02 academic year. O'Brien has spent the past five seasons as head coach at Texas-El Paso ... Long Beach State head coach Julie Cochran resigned ... Lenny Paoletti resigned as head soccer and head men's and women's tennis coach at Shenandoah. Paoletti has guided the programs since 1997.

Softball -- Utica appointed Jim Murnane as head coach and intramural director. Murnane, who has been an assistant baseball coach at the school, replaces Dave Fontaine ... Karen Lee Matteson was selected as head coach at North Carolina-Greensboro to succeed Katie Flynn. For the past three seasons, Matteson has guided the program at Cal State Hayward and closes her tenure there with an 80-56-1 record.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants -- North Carolina State appointed Alexis Keto and Chad Onken as assistant men's and women's coaches.

Men's and women's track and field -- Redlands appointed Jeff Stanners as interim head coach. Stanners has been an assistant cross country and track and field coach at the school since 1998.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Paul Parker Jr. and Scott Finkerson were added as assistants at Heidelberg. Parker has been an assistant sports information director at Morehouse, and Finkerson worked as an assistant coach at Wheaton (Massachusetts) in 1999.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Elizabeth Zicha, head women's coach at Muskingum, resigned. Zicha, who ends her tenure at the school with a 444-167 record, will continue as a full-time assistant professor in the physical and health education department ... Kim Hall resigned as head coach at North Carolina State ... Lycoming added Timothy McMahon as head coach ... Tonya Larson was hired as head coach at Birmingham Southern. Larson has spent the last three years as an assistant at Alabama-Birmingham ... Carrie Broomfield resigned as head women's coach at Nebraska Wesleyan ... Santa Clara awarded a contract extension to head coach Jon Wallace.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Tammy Leibl resigned as an assistant women's coach at San Diego.

STAFF

Sports information -- Robert Boyle was chosen as sports information director at New Orleans, effective January 9.

Sports information assistant -- Montclair State added Roman J. Uschak as assistant sports information director ... Cal State Fullerton chose Jason Spencer as a sports information assistant. For the past 16 months, Spencer has served in a similar capacity at Portland ... Kevin Ludwig was hired as assistant sports information director at Montana. Since 1996, Ludwig has been sports information director at Wayne State (Nebraska).

AGREEMENTS

The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics announced continued financial support from Sears, Roebuck and Co. for the John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards. Sears agreed to contribute another $20,000, for a total donation of $40,000 in two years, to the program that annually presents five $10,000 grants to senior minority students pursuing graduate degrees in athletics administration. Other contributors to the program include adidas America, American Football Coaches Association, Eddie Robinson Foundation, Host Communications, Mellon Private Asset Management, National Basketball Association and the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

ASSOCIATIONS

The United States Olympic Committee elected Sandra Baldwin as chair/president of the board of directors for the 2000-04 quadrennium. Baldwin, the first woman elected to the post, spent the 1997-00 quadrennium as vice president/chair for the organization.

CORRECTIONS

The starting times for the Women's Final Four semifinals and final were listed incorrectly in a Division I Women's Basketball Committee story in the November 20 issue of The NCAA News. The Women's Final Four semifinal games will be played at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Central time March 30. The championship game will be at 7:30 p.m. Central time April 1.

The name of the 1964 Division I men's cross country champion was misspelled in the Looking Back section of the November 20 NCAA News. The champion that year was Elmore Banton of Ohio University, who completed the race in a time of 20:07.5.

NOTABLES

Anders Hultman and Lorena Ochoa were chosen as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for November. Hultman, a junior at Oklahoma State, won individual medalist honors at the Rolex/Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational. Ochoa, a freshman at Arizona, also captured individual medalist honors at the Rolex/Golf World/Palmetto Dunes Collegiate Invitational.

DEATHS

Former Illinois Wesleyan coach and athletics administrator Jack Horenberger died December 1. Horenberger, 87, was head basketball coach from 1945 to 1965, head baseball coach from 1942 to 1981 and athletics director from 1947 to 1981.

Robert Guillot, former president at North Alabama, died November 15.

Former Fordham football player Jim Lansing died December 2 at the age of 81. Fordham's last consensus all-America in 1941, Lansing played tackle and helped the 1941 squad win the Sugar Bowl. He coached at the club and varsity levels at Fordham beginning in 1965 and retired from coaching in 1971.

Former Wyoming volleyball coach Mike English passed away November 20. English was 48.
