Thomas named athletics director at Akron

Akron has hired Michael J. Thomas as director of athletics. For the past eight years, Thomas has worked as associate director of athletics for programs, facilities and operations at Virginia.

During his tenure at Virginia, Thomas has served as chair for the Atlantic Coast Conference men's and women's swimming and diving committee and the women's rowing committee. He also worked on the conference's sportsmanship committee. Additionally, Thomas is a member of the NCAA Women's Rowing Committee.

Before joining the program at Virginia, Thomas spent seven years as assistant director of athletics for internal operations at Denver and fulfilled responsibilities as an administrative promotions and marketing intern for the athletics department at Iowa.

A 1983 graduate of Colorado State with a bachelor's degree in business management, Thomas also earned a master's degree in athletics administration from Western Illinois in 1985.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

Raymond L. Fitz, president at Dayton, announced plans to retire, effective in 2002 ... Princeton's Harold T. Shapiro resigned as president, effective in June 2001 ... Robert Hahn announced plans to retire as president at Johnson State, effective June 30, 2001 ... Lynchburg's Charles O. Warren announced retirement plans, effective July 31, 2001.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Stanley Perchan resigned as athletics director at Southern Colorado, effective January 4, 2001, to become director of athletics development at Florida Gulf Coast. Perchan has been athletics director at Southern Colorado since March 1, 1999 ... Ted Kissell, vice-president and director of athletics at Dayton since 1992, signed a five-year contract extension ... Redlands hired Jeffrey P. Martinez as director of athletics. Martinez, who replaces Carl Clapp, has been with the school since 1996, most recently serving as associate athletics director ... Michael J. Thomas was hired as director of athletics at Akron. Thomas has been associate athletics director at University of Virginia at Charlottesville since 1993.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Temple named Kristen Foley as assistant athletics director and senior woman administrator.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Texas A&M-Corpus Christi hired Brian DeAngelis as assistant athletics director to replace Randy Eaton. DeAngelis has been assistant athletics director and head women's cross country coach at Delta State for the past four years ... Nan Hambrose was chosen as assistant athletics director and head women's basketball coach at St. Mary's (Maryland). Hambrose, who succeeds Shann Hart as head coach, has been an assistant coach at Seton Hall ... Johanna DiCarlo, head field hockey coach at Regis (Massachusetts) since July, assumed additional duties as assistant athletics director and head softball coach. DiCarlo worked as an assistant field hockey coach at Bentley last season. The school also chose Wendy Rogers as assistant athletics director and head basketball coach. Most recently, Rogers has fulfilled head softball coaching duties at Emmanuel (Massachusetts) ... Stetson appointed Richard Skeel as assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions ... Dan Simmons, head softball coach at Nebraska-Kearney, was promoted to assistant athletics director for business operations. Simmons, who has been with the school for 16 years, retired from head coaching responsibilities.

COACHES

Baseball -- Joe Urso was hired as head coach at Tampa. Urso most recently has been manager of MLB's Anaheim Angels minor league affiliate in Butte, Montana.

Baseball assistants -- Shepard appointed Scott Leach as an assistant. Leach was an assistant at Centenary (Louisiana) from 1997 to 2000 ... Darwin Vickery was selected as an assistant at Francis Marion ... Tampa added Sam Militello as an assistant. Militello has been a pitching coach in MLB's Cleveland Indians organization ... Scott Lawler assumed duties as an assistant coach and Luke Sabers was added as a volunteer assistant coach at Northern Illinois.

Men's basketball -- Shenandoah's Dave Dutton resigned as head men's basketball coach, but will continue as athletics director on a full-time basis. Dutton has led the basketball program since May 1988. The school appointed Robert Harris Jr. as head coach. Harris as been an assistant with the squad for eight seasons and also will continue to serve as the school's assistant athletics director for marketing and promotions ... Hiram named Sean McDonnell as head coach ... North Carolina State signed head coach Herb Sendek to a two-year contract extension through the 2004-05 season ... Lycoming chose Terry Conrad as head coach ... Nolan Richardson, head coach at Arkansas, agreed to a seven-year contract extension. Richardson has led the program to a 356-144 mark in 15 seasons as head coach ... Wentworth Institute head coach Harry McShane will take a leave of absence during the 2000-01 season. McShane has been head coach since the 1994-95 season. Assistant coach Tom Devitt will serve as interim head coach.

Men's basketball assistants -- Stan Nance, Travis Garrett and Frank Martin were added as assistants at Northeastern. Nance has been an assistant coach at Hartford since 1992, and Garrett has served as an assistant at Chipola Junior College in Marianna, Florida, since 1995. From 1995 to 1999, Martin was head coach at Miami (Florida) Senior High School ... Shenandoah chose Derek Helman, a 2000 graduate of the school, as an assistant coach ... Cal State Fullerton selected Mark Maki as an assistant coach. Last season, Maki worked as an assistant at Fairleigh Dickinson ... Jim Douglas was chosen as an assistant coach at St. Joseph's (New York). Most recently, Douglas has been an assistant coach at the high-school level ... Texas A&M-Corpus Christi hired Bobby Taylor as an assistant coach, succeeding Johnny Brown. For the past two years, Taylor has worked as an assistant coach at Grand Valley State ... Tony Fryer assumed responsibilities as men's basketball administrative assistant at Florida International. Fryer currently works as a guidance counselor at the high-school level ... George Felton resigned as associate head coach at Kentucky to become a scout for the NBA's Indiana Pacers ... Akron added Pat Knight as an assistant, replacing Saint Crawford, effective October 16. For the past two seasons, Knight has served as an assistant coach at Indiana ... Greg Berry was chosen as an assistant coach at New Mexico State ... Incarnate Word appointed Lou Gudino as an assistant coach and appointed Kevin Farrar as a graduate assistant. Gudino has been coaching at Barton County (Kansas) Community College, and Farrar has most recently been a graduate assistant coach at Texas A&M-Kingsville ... McNeese State selected Tic Price as an assistant coach ... Phil Campbell was awarded responsibilities as an assistant at Susquehanna ... Quinnipiac added Ed Young and Mitch Oliver as assistants. Young has been head coach at Mount Aloysius College for two seasons, and Oliver has spent the past three seasons as an assistant at Sacred Heart.

Women's basketball -- Valencia Lareze Jordan was elevated to head coach at Tennessee State ... Matthew Donohue was added as head coach at Bloomfield ... Howard hired Cathy Parson as head coach ... Buffalo State hired Fred Batchelor as head coach to succeed Gail F. Maloney, who became senior associate athletics director at the school. Batchelor was head men's basketball coach at the school last season.

Women's basketball assistants -- Keene State's Lynne Andrews and Scott Price assumed additional duties as assistant coaches. Andrews has been associate director of recreational sports since 1997, and Price has been head women's volleyball coach for two seasons ... Lisa Fisher and Shon Hardy assumed responsibilities as assistant coaches at Northeastern. Fisher spent the past four seasons as an assistant at Portland State, and Hardy was head girls' varsity coach at Sunnyside High School in Tucson, Arizona ... Albany (New York) chose Kevin Nesbeth as an administrative assistant ... Kelcey Scott assumed responsibilities as an assistant coach at Florida A&M ... Nicci Hays was appointed as an assistant coach at Nicholls State ... Wentworth Institute named Jen Thompson as an assistant coach ... Stephanie Shadwell was named as an assistant at Cal State Fullerton. Shadwell is a recent graduate of the school and competed on the basketball team for four seasons ... Donna Seybold was elevated to associate head basketball coach at Indiana State after most recently serving as an assistant with the program ... Houston added Lesli Vollrath as coordinator of women's basketball operations.

Men's and women's cross country assistant -- Texas-Pan American selected Gabriel Rodriguez as an assistant cross country and track and field coach.

Football -- Villanova head coach Andy Talley signed a four-year contract extension ... Concordia-Moorhead's Jim Christopherson announced plans to retire as head coach, effective at the end of the year.

Men's and women's golf -- Rodger Cromer, head men's coach at Miami (Ohio), announced plans to retire at the end of the 2000-01 academic year. Cromer has led the program since the 1964-65 school year and has captured 11 Mid-American Conference titles.

Men's and women's golf assistants -- Hofstra selected Elizabeth Diesa as an assistant men's and women's coach ... Delaware named Jason Grubbs as an assistant men's coach ... Erin O'Neil was chosen as an assistant women's coach at Auburn.

Men's and women's gymnastics -- Centenary chose Bill Hardy as head coach ... Vermont awarded Gary Bruening additional duties as head women's coach. Bruening has been serving as head men's gymnastics coach ... Noah Riskin was hired as head men's coach at MIT, succeeding Fran Molesso. Riskin has been a faculty member in the integrated media program and school of dance at the California Institute of the Arts.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- St. Mary's (Minnesota) selected Duncan Ryhorchuk as interim head women's coach ... Yale selected Dave Hainsworth as volunteer head men's coach ... Bob Filighera was formally appointed head women's coach and assistant ice arena manager at Buffalo State. Filighera has fulfilled the same duties at the school for the past two years.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistants -- Pat Norton was named as assistant men's coach at Vermont, succeeding Joe Gervais, who became Life Skills coordinator at the school. For the past four seasons, Norton has been an assistant coach at Norwich ... Jade Kersey assumed responsibilities as assistant men's coach at Sacred Heart.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- David Ashworth was hired as head men's coach at Clark, replacing Ed Charlton ... Cazenovia appointed Rob Kenna as head men's coach and appointed Shelly Kempton as head women's coach ... Monmouth named Sue Cowperthwait as head women's coach ... Delaware added Pat Scarpello and Justin McKenna as assistant men's coaches.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistants -- Bryant hired Patrick Cooney as an assistant. Cooney, formerly head coach at Roger Williams for four years, served as an assistant coach at Elmira during the 2000 season ... Joseph Ceglia was added as men's graduate assistant coach at Drexel ... Sacred Heart named Andrew DiCicco as an assistant men's coach.

Men's and women's rifle -- Roy Horsey was selected as head coach at MIT.

Men's and women's rowing -- Beth Greene was hired as head coach at Regis (Massachusetts). Greene is a recent graduate of Ithaca, where she was a member of the varsity rowing team ... MIT added Ian Hutton as men's lightweight rowing coach. Hutton, who replaces interim coach Doug Vincent, has been head women's rowing coach at Rhode Island.

Men's and women's rowing assistants -- Matt Boyle was chosen as an assistant men's rowing coach at George Washington ... Mike Storke was selected as assistant women's coach at Delaware ... Anna Kate Deutschendorf was hired as women's novice crew coach at Santa Clara. For the past two seasons, Deutschendorf has worked as an assistant coach and novice coach at Virginia.

Men's and women's sailing -- MIT hired Michael Kalin as head women's coach and assistant sailing master. Kalin replaces Kyle Welch.

Men's and women's skiing -- Vermont added Allan Serrano as Nordic coach ... Michael Johnson assumed duties as head men's and women's Nordic ski coach at MIT.

Men's and women's skiing assistant -- Bryan Peterson was appointed as an assistant Alpine coach at Vermont.

Men's soccer -- Dave Hesch was added as head men's soccer and head men's tennis coach at Lake Erie. Hesch most recently has been an assistant soccer coach at Cazenovia.

Men's soccer assistant -- Frank Butcher was hired as an assistant coach at Buffalo.

Women's soccer -- Regis (Massachusetts) promoted Christina Contardo to head coach. Contardo spent last season as an assistant coach ... Buffalo State formally selected Courtney Longua as head women's soccer and lacrosse coach. Longua has served on an interim basis since the beginning of the 2000 season ... Lake Erie hired Lauren Ferullo as head women's soccer and softball coach. Ferullo formerly coached soccer and basketball at Endicott.

Softball -- Jackson State chose Jack Lott as head coach ... Mindy Robinson, an assistant softball and field hockey coach at Nichols, was promoted to head softball coach, succeeding Colleen Nasis. Robinson will continue as assistant field hockey coach ... Holly Carnes was chosen as interim head coach at Nebraska-Kearney, succeeding Dan Simmons, who was promoted to assistant athletics director for business operations. Carnes served as a volunteer coach with the program last season.

Softball assistants -- Heidi Pease was selected as an assistant coach at Wittenberg ... Shannon Salsburg and Jaclyn Beavers were added as assistants at Buffalo ... Bloomfield chose Jennifer Bukofsky as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's squash -- Beverly Tunnicliffe was appointed as head women's coach at Cornell.

Men's and women's swimming and diving -- Brandy Nettles was named head swimming and diving coach and aquatics director at Regis (Massachusetts). Nettles formerly was a volunteer swimming coach at Miami (Ohio) and an assistant swimming coach at Princeton ... Tom Romano, head women's soccer coach at New Jersey Institute of Technology, was awarded additional responsibilities as interim men's and women's swimming coach at the school.

Men's and women's swimming and diving assistants -- Oakland added Jon Teal and Laura Searle as assistant coaches and Tony Venticinque as diving coach. Teal has been coaching boys' and girls' swimming at Birmingham Groves (Michigan) High School for five years and Searle currently is graduate student at Oakland. Venticinque has served as diving coach at the high-school level for the last 10 years ... New Jersey Institute of Technology hired Gregory Lynch as an assistant men's and women's swimming coach. Lynch has been head coach of the Ridgefield Swim Club and assistant manager of the Ridgefield Community pool ... Nora Kelly was hired as an assistant swimming and diving coach at Rhode Island. Last season, Kelly was co-diving coach at Rider ... Delaware hired Dan Sullivan as an assistant men's and women's swimming and diving coach ... New Hampshire named Matt Cichella as diving coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- John Baines was appointed as head men's tennis and assistant men's basketball coach at Elmhurst.

Men's and women's tennis assistants -- Buffalo tabbed T.J. Greggs as assistant women's coach and John Brunner as assistant men's coach.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Georgia Tech selected Chris Huffins as assistant men's and women's coach ... James Garnham accepted responsibilities as an assistant coach at Buffalo ... Dana Ostrander was appointed as a graduate assistant coach and Rodney Wiltshire was chosen as an assistant coach at Albany (New York).

Men's and women's volleyball -- Lake Erie tabbed Joanna Wells as head women's volleyball and basketball coach. Wells has been an assistant volleyball, softball and basketball coach at Oberlin.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Shan Sell was named as an assistant at Hood. Sell has coached with the Frederick (Maryland) Area Volleyball Organization for two years.

Wrestling assistant -- Buffalo hired Tom Tomeo as an assistant coach.

STAFF

Academic services assistant -- Luke Bencie was named as an academic support assistant at George Washington.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Michael G. Kotelnicki was added as an assistant athletic trainer at American. Since 1998, Kotelnicki has been head athletic trainer at Ferrum ... Delaware chose Laura Marzano as a graduate assistant athletic trainer ... Karen Lovell assumed duties as an assistant athletic trainer at Austin Peay.

Athletics communications assistant -- Heidi Roth was named as an assistant director of athletics communications at Buffalo.

Compliance -- Towson hired Mark Rountree as director of compliance services. Most recently, Rountree has been compliance coordinator and assistant to the athletics director at Maryland.

Facilities assistant -- Albany (New York) named Todd Beeten as assistant athletics facilities director and volunteer assistant men's basketball coach.

Life Skills -- Joe Gervais accepted duties as Life Skills coordinator at Vermont. Most recently, Gervais has served as assistant men's ice hockey coach at the school.

Media relations assistants -- Ann Wheelwright and Trent Packer were named as assistant athletics media relations directors at Virginia. Wheelwright has served as assistant athletics director/sports information director at Boston College for the past four years, and Packer is a recent graduate of California ... Douglas Poole was selected as assistant director of athletics media relations at New Hampshire.

Sports information -- Hartford sports information director John Sudsbury resigned to assume responsibilities as associate director of media relations at Tulane. Hartford named Tom Machamer, assistant director of sports information, as interim sports information director ... Chris Hughes was hired as sports information director at Cal State Los Angeles. Hughes has been director of athletics media services and head golf coach at Caltech ... Nicholls State selected Ross Blacker as sports information director.

Sports information assistants -- Minnesota State-Mankato chose Shane Drahota as assistant sports information director. Drahota is a 1999 graduate of the school and has served as a graduate assistant in the sports information office for the past two years ... Romanda Noble was hired as assistant coordinator for sports information at Howard. Noble has been sports information director at Maryland-Eastern Shore for the past three and a half years.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- Justin Mahoney was hired as an assistant coach at Albany (New York).

NATIONAL OFFICE

Tim Clark was hired as education outreach program coordinator at the NCAA. Clark, who formerly served as a youth programs coordinator at the Association from 1994 to 1999, most recently has been a senior client coordinator for BlueLine Staffing.

CONFERENCES

The Atlantic 10 Conference awarded Commissioner Linda Bruno with a multiyear contract. Bruno has led the conference for six years.

Tom Wistrcill resigned as commissioner at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.

The Northeast-10 Conference extended the contract of commissioner David R. Brunk through 2004. Brunk is in his third year as commissioner. The conference also appointed Joseph G. Morone, president at Bentley, as chairperson of the Council of Presidents; Thomas R. Plough, president at Assumption, as vice-chairperson; and Mark T. Cregan, president at Stonehill, as treasurer.

ASSOCIATIONS

Stanley O. Ikenberry, president of the American Council on Education since November 1996, announced plans to step down, effective June 30, 2001. Ikenberry will resume his faculty post at Illinois.

The Amateur Baseball Association chose Ted Breidenthal as it's first executive director. Breidenthal, who currently is a marketing director at a company specializing in composite technologies for the sporting goods industry, formerly worked at the NCAA for 12 years as a publications editor.

AGREEMENTS

The Southeastern Conference awarded Host Communications, Inc. with a four-year contract extension through 2007 as the conference's exclusive marketing partner. The agreement was established in 1989.

CORRECTIONS

An article in the September 11 issue of The NCAA News misstated the number of women and minorities serving on the Knight Foundation Commission on Intercollegiate Athletics. The Commission contains three ethnic minorities and three women.

The revenue-distribution chart for Division I conferences in the September 25 issue of The NCAA News contained an incorrect list of institutions classified as independents for the 1999-00 fiscal year. That group should have included Belmont University; Centenary College (Louisiana); State University of New York at Albany; State University of New York at Stony Brook; and the University of Texas, Pan American.

NOTABLES

Billy Harvey, a senior at Brigham Young, and Lorena Ochoa, a freshman at Arizona, were named as Rolex College Golfers of the Month for September.

DEATHS

Former Pace President William G. Sharwell died September 18. Sharwell was 80.

Lynn Pastucha, a women's basketball player at Bradley, died September 7. Pastucha, 19, set the school's single-season record for blocks as a freshman.
