Edwards accepts AD post at UC San Diego

UC San Diego has hired Earl W. Edwards as director of athletics, effective March 1. Edwards succeeds Judith M. Sweet, former NCAA president, who resigned after 24 years to accept a teaching position.

For the past seven years, Edwards has served as athletics director at East Stroudsburg. He is a member of the NCAA Division II Management Council, Walter Byers Scholarship Committee and the Committee on Women's Athletics. Edwards formerly was an associate athletics director at UC San Diego from 1989 to 1993 and an assistant athletics director at the school from 1987 to 1989. He fulfilled responsibilities as assistant athletics director for men's athletics at Drexel from 1981 to 1987, and he also has served as an athletics administrator at Michigan, UC Davis and Massachusetts.

Edwards earned an associate degree in 1970 from College of Staten Island, a bachelor's degree in 1972 from East Stroudsburg and a master's degree in 1973 from Massachusetts.

GENERAL

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Steve Pederson, athletics director at Pittsburgh, was awarded a contract extension ... Richmond selected Jim Miller as athletics director, effective March 1.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Hofstra promoted Jim Sheehan to associate athletics director for communications. Sheehan has been director of athletics communications.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Jack Taylor was awarded interim duties as assistant athletics director for academic affairs at Bowling Green to succeed Mike Bartley, who resigned. Taylor has been coordinator of undergraduate advising initiatives ... UC Irvine appointed Paula Smith as assistant athletics director/student services, effective February 1. Smith has been with the Big West Conference for 12 years, including the last six as assistant commissioner.

COACHES

Baseball -- Steve Shoemaker was hired as head coach at Capital to succeed Brian Arnold, who resigned as head baseball and women's soccer coach. For the past two seasons, Shoemaker has been head coach of the Sioux City Explorers of the Northern League ... Salve Regina head coach George "Andy" Andrade resigned to become chief of staff for Rhode Island's lieutenant governor. Andrade closes his tenure after 15 seasons. Three-year assistant Steve Cirella was named as interim head coach.

Baseball assistants -- Sean McGrath was selected as an assistant at Williams ... Wichita State appointed Sean Johnson as director of baseball operations ... Bowling Green chose Tod Brown as an assistant coach. In 1999, Brown was a volunteer assistant at Arizona.

Men's and women's cross country -- Edward L. Haas, assistant athletics director at Alvernia, accepted additional duties as head men's and women's coach. Haas succeeds Bill Norton.

Field hockey -- Ainslee Press-Lamb was promoted to head coach at Yale. Press-Lamb, who replaces Marisa Didio, has been an assistant coach for the past three years ... Marisa Didio accepted head coaching duties at Northwestern to succeed Diane Loosbrock. Didio formerly was head coach at the school from 1990 to 1994 and most recently was head coach at Yale.

Football -- Coe head coach D.J. LeRoy resigned ... Denver Johnson was chosen as head coach at Illinois State. Johnson, who was head coach at Murray State for three years, succeeds Todd Berry ... North Carolina State appointed Chuck Amato as head coach. Amato has been an assistant at Florida State since 1982 and replaces Mike O'Cain, who was released ... Alabama State appointed L.C. Cole as head coach. Cole, who succeeds Ron Dickerson, has been head coach at Tennessee State for four seasons ... Tommy Tuberville, head coach at Auburn, was awarded a one-year contract extension ... Illinois extended the contract of head coach Ron Turner through the 2003-04 season ... Rhode Island named Tim Stowers as head coach ... Liberty's Sam Rutigliano announced his retirement after 11 seasons. ... Augustana (Illinois) head coach Tom Schmulbach resigned ... Roger Hughes was hired as head coach at Princeton. Hughes has been offensive coordinator at Dartmouth since 1992 and replaces Steve Tosches, who was released ... Timothy Pendergast was named as head coach at Hamilton.

Football assistants -- Craig Wederquist was named as defensive line coach at UNLV ... Findlay dismissed assistants Mike Schanski, Don Akers and Greg Gilbert. Gilbert will be reassigned in the athletics department ... Bill Stewart was hired as receivers coach at West Virginia. Stewart has been offensive coordinator for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the Canadian Football League. The school also awarded offensive line coach Bill Legg additional responsibilities as offensive coordinator and named assistant head coach Doc Holliday as quarterbacks coach ... Mark Nofri was added as an assistant coach at Juniata ... Eastern Michigan appointed Cary Conklin as quarterbacks coach, Mike Cummings as defensive line coach, and John Dignan inside linebackers coach ... Mark Nelson was selected as defensive coordinator at Arkansas Tech ... Tusculum named Dieter Brock as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks and receivers coach. The school also selected Steve McGill as defensive line coach. Brock most recently fulfilled co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach responsibilities with the Canadian Football League's Edmonton Eskimos. McGill has been offensive line coach at Middle Georgia ... Kevin Kelly resigned as an assistant coach at Syracuse to accept the position of defensive coordinator at Marshall, and Bruce Warwick, director of operations, resigned to accept a position with NFL Europe ... Tennessee-Martin chose Gerald Broussard as offensive line coach, Brian Maner as secondary coach, Jeff Richards as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach, and Blaine McCorkle as graduate assistant receivers coach ... Karl Dunbar was selected as defensive line coach at Louisiana Tech ... Southern Methodist appointed Larry Kueck as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, Pat Henderson as an assistant coach, Johnny Ringo as wide receivers coach, Danny Baker as tight ends coach and Oscar Giles as an assistant coach ... John "Doc" Holliday was chosen as an assistant coach at North Carolina State ... Brian Williams was appointed as an assistant at Ohio State ... Boise State offensive coordinator Brent Myers resigned to become offensive line and tight ends coach at Arizona ... Joe Kines was selected as linebackers coach at Florida State ... Oregon's Bob Foster announced plans to retire as assistant coach ... Bob Klinar was announced as defensive line coach at Oberlin. For the past two seasons, Klinar has served as head football coach and assistant principal at the high-school level.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Holy Cross hired Michael McCaffrey as head men's coach. McCaffrey formerly was an assistant at New England and head coach at American International ... Salem State awarded head men's coaching duties to Rick Anderson.

Men's soccer -- Assumption elevated John Murphy to director of soccer. Murphy will continue as head men's coach and assume head coaching duties for the women's squad ... Ramapo awarded Peppe Pinton duties as head coach and director of soccer operations.

Women's soccer -- Julie Orlowski resigned as head coach at Boise State. The school chose Steve Lucas as head coach.

Men's soccer assistants -- John Conte and Tim Hippert were promoted to associate coaches at Assumption.

Softball -- Judi Garman announced plans to retire as head coach at Cal State Fullerton before the 2000 season. The nation's most victorious Division I softball coach, Garman established the program in 1980 and won a national championship in 1986. She will serve as an administrative assistant to interim head coach Michelle Gromacki, and she will retire from the university on March 27. Gromacki has been top assistant coach for the past five years ... Plattsburgh State hired Sean Cotter as head coach. During the 1999 season, Cotter was head coach at Teikyo Post.

Softball assistants -- St. John's (New York) named Megan Bryant as an assistant coach ... Pete Goodwin resigned as an assistant at Mississippi State.

Men's and women's tennis -- Michigan State selected Tim Bauer as women's head coach ... Whitworth appointed Mike Shanks as head men's coach to succeed Sean Bushey. Shanks has been head tennis professional at Central Park Racquet and Athletic Club of Spokane since 1984. Bushey will continue duties as head men's and women's soccer coach ... Seton Hall appointed Adam Levitt as head men's coach ... Randy Halfpap accepted the head men's and women's coaching position at Salisbury State. Halfpap has been head coach at Pomona-Pitzer for two seasons ... Bryant awarded head men's coaching duties to Larry Sack and head women's coaching duties to Barbara Cilli. Sack has been community coordinator for Rhode Island and Worcester County with the United States Tennis Association. Cilli has been an assistant coach at Providence.

Men's and women's track and field -- Dave Krueger resigned as head coach at Missouri-Kansas City to accept assistant coaching duties at Montana. Krueger replaces Chris Mackala at Montana. Missouri-Kansas City awarded interim head coaching duties to cross country coach Geoff Masanet.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Tennessee named Doug Molnar as interim distance coach, succeeding Brenda Webb. Molnar has been a volunteer coach with the program. The school also selected Missy Kane Bemiller as a volunteer assistant for the 2000 season.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Michelle Blaeser, an assistant coach at Saint Benedict since 1997, was awarded head coaching duties at the school. Blaeser replaces Carol Howe-Veenstra, who resigned to focus on duties as athletics director ... Centenary named Holly Tarter as head women's coach ... Mary De Jute resigned as head coach and assistant women's basketball coach at Heidelberg for health reasons ... North Carolina-Charlotte appointed Lisa Marston as head women's coach ... Chris Lamb was selected as head women's coach at Wichita State ... Butler head coach Sharon Dingman resigned to become head coach at Illinois State. Dingman has led the Butler program since 1992 and closes her tenure as the school's most victorious volleyball coach with a 167-101 record.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- Shannon Tuttle was appointed as an assistant at Georgia Tech. For the past three years, Tuttle has been an assistant at Kent State.

Wrestling -- Fort Hays State head coach Bob Smith announced his retirement.

STAFF

Academic services -- Robert Ciervo was chosen as director of academic support for student-athletes at Temple.

Athletics communications -- Len Skoros was elevated to director of athletics publications at Hofstra. Skoros was associate director of athletics communications.

Athletic training assistant -- Saint Joseph's (Indiana) hired David Compton as assistant athletic trainer to replace Liz Gillem.

Development -- Brett Davidson was hired as director of institutional development at Merchant Marine. Davidson has been director of marketing and promotions at the school.

Marketing and promotions -- Pacific selected Leslie Cox as director of athletics marketing and promotions.

Strength and conditioning -- John Binkowski was appointed as Northern Illinois' head strength and conditioning coach. Binkowski succeeds Jim Poynton, who resigned.

Strength and conditioning assistant -- Maryland hired Craig Fitzgerald as an assistant strength and conditioning coach. Fitzgerald has been director of strength and conditioning at Catholic since 1997 in addition to serving as an assistant football coach for the past two seasons.

ASSOCIATIONS

The American Football Coaches Association elected Albany head coach Bob Ford as president. The organization also elected Carson-Newman head coach Ken Sparks and North Carolina assistant coach Ken Rucker to the board of trustees.

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America announced the following as newly elected members of the executive committee: Jay Engeln, principal at Palmer (Colorado) High School, NSCAA president; Mike Berticelli, head men's coach at Notre Dame, vice-president for education; Janet Rayfield, assistant women's coach at Illinois, vice-president for marketing; and Joe Cummings, general manager of Mass Pro Soccer, secretary.

NOTABLES

The National Soccer Coaches Association of America and adidas announced the following as men's and women's NSCAA/adidas National Players of the Year: Division I men -- Sasha Victorine, UCLA; Division II men -- Assaf Dagai, Southern Connecticut State; Division III men -- Dan Annan Jr., St. Lawrence; Division I women -- Mandy Clemens, Santa Clara; Division II women -- Ruth Van't Land, Cal Poly Pomona; Division III women -- Janine Harispe, UC San Diego.

Frank Beamer, head football coach at Virginia Tech, captured the Bear Bryant Award. Beamer has been head coach at Virginia Tech for 12 years.

The American Football Coaches Association named the following individuals as Coaches of the Year: Division I -- Frank Beamer, Virginia Tech; Division I-AA -- Paul Johnson, Georgia Southern; Division II -- Mel Tjeerdsma, Northwest Missouri State; Division III -- Frosty Westering, Pacific Lutheran.

Jimmie McDowell, president of the All-American Football Foundation, was honored as the Bert McGrane Award winner. The award is given annually by the Football Writers Association of America.

Penn State senior middle hitter Lauren Cacciamani was named as the Honda Award winner as the top woman collegiate athlete in volleyball. Cacciamani helped Penn State to the national championship this year and earned most valuable player at the Division I Women's Volleyball Championship.

The following have been named as National Soccer Coaches Association of America/adidas national coaches of the year: Division I men -- Jerry Yeagley, Indiana; Division II men -- Tom Lang, Southern Connecticut State; Division III men -- Bob Durocher, St. Lawrence; Division I women -- Patrick Farmer, Penn State; Division II women -- Carlos Juarez, Cal Poly Pomona; Division III women -- Brian McManus, UC San Diego.

Peter Gooding was announced as the Bill Jeffrey Award winner. The honor, given by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, is presented for outstanding service and/or achievement in college soccer. Gooding, former NSCAA president in 1990-91, currently serves as head men's soccer coach and athletics director at Amherst.

Lauren Cacciamani and Kerri Walsh were named as 1999 American Volleyball Coaches Association Division I national co-players of the year. Cacciamani, a senior middle blocker at Penn State, was a first-team GTE academic all-American and Big Ten player of the year. Walsh, a senior opposite hitter at Stanford, was a four-time AVCA first-team all-American and Pacific-10 player of the year.

The 2000 Rolex/Gladys Palmer Meritorious Service Award winner was Oklahoma State head women's coach Ann Pitts. Pitts, who also captured the award in 1987, established the program in 1976 and has earned 15 conference championships and made 15 NCAA tournament appearances. The award is presented by the College Golf Foundation and is given to a coach for outstanding service to women's collegiate golf.

DEATHS

Former Alabama football player and coach Jim Blevins died recently after battling cancer for 11 years. He was 65. Blevins competed with two Alabama squads before coaching centers and linebackers at the school from 1962 to 1963. He also was an assistant coach and head coach at Jacksonville State and an assistant at UTEP.

Molly Hatcher, a senior member of the Kenyon women's swimming team, was killed when a team van crashed on a slick road. Hatcher, 21, was a member of the program that has won 16 straight Division III national championships.
