The NCAA Division II Women's Golf Committee discussed the possibility of regional tournaments at its annual meeting June 26-29 in Indianapolis.

The group explored the idea of conducting regional tournaments that would serve as qualification for the NCAA championships, a format that is used for the Division II Men's Golf Championships.

The committee recommended that four regional tournaments (one per region) be held at the end of the season, beginning in 2002. Each tournament would consist of 36 holes, and the teams in the top half of the region would be invited to compete.

Along with those teams, the top three individuals (not with a team) whose play has merited consideration also would be invited to the tournament.

Under this format, institutions would pay expenses for the regional tournament.

The committee would like to have neutral sites for these tournaments.

The regional committee will use the national selection criteria to invite teams to the tournament.

The committee also decided to model its scoring system after that of the Division I tournaments. The new scoring system will have the four low scores per round count toward the team total (dropping one score). When a six-player format is used, coaches must designate their top five players. If the top five are not designated, the first five players on the lineup sheet will be considered for scoring purposes.

In other action, the committee:

Determined the dates for the 2001 tournament as May 16-19. The practice rounds for the championships will be May 14 and 15.

Began the process of soliciting bids for future championships. Institutions or groups interested in hosting should contact Kristin Whitted, NCAA assistant director of championships, at the national office.

Noted that the committee is in need of a North Region representative to the group. Nominees should contact Lori Braa, NCAA committee coordinator, at the national office.
