Sports sponsorship: Adams State College has announced plans to add a women's soccer program. The new program will compete as a scholarship-equipped club team in fall 2001 while preparing to make the jump to the varsity level in fall 2002. The soccer team will be the 14th sport offered by Adams State -- seven each for men and women. The team will play in Rex Stadium, the current home of the football and track and field teams. Adams State will join seven other Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference teams sponsoring women's soccer ... University of Southern Colorado students have voted to reinstate football, women's cross country, and track and field. They also voted to add women's golf to the university's athletics department. The planned starting date for all four sports, which will compete in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference, will be fall 2002. Students also approved the renovation of Southern Colorado's Massari Arena. Students will pay $1.5 million of the overall $10.5 million expense. "We are very excited that the students have supported these two very critical issues," said Butch Perchan, Southern Colorado athletics director.

Milestones: Richard Schmidt, University of Tampa, 400 career victories in baseball. Schmidt stands at 400-168 throughout his 18-year tenure at Tampa and two years at Vanderbilt. Schmidt has a 372-141 record at Tampa.
