The 20th Division II Women's Cross Country Championships represented a day of fourths, as Western State and Kennesaw State's Marjo Venalainen captured the team and individual championships, respectively.

Cal Poly Pomona hosted the championships November 18 at Prado Park in Chino, California.

Western State became just the fourth institution to win the team title in the championship's history, and Venalainen is the fourth runner to win back-to-back individual crowns.

The Western State women followed the team title won by its men's team earlier in the day with a commanding performance. Three Western State runners placed in the top eight as the Mountaineers finished with 38 points. North Dakota was a distant second with 131.

Western State's victory snapped an eight-year Adams State winning streak. The Mountaineers placed second six times and third twice during the eight-year stretch.

"Of the two titles today, I am most proud of our women's team," Western State head coach Duane Vandenbusche said. "We hadn't won a title since we were a member of the NAIA, so it is nice to finally win a national title at this level."

"It was our goal to duplicate our best year ever at Western State. We won our conference and regional meets, so I knew if we remained healthy we had a good shot of winning this thing."

Andrea Hurbina led Western State on the 6,000-meter course by placing fourth in 21 minutes, 56.7 seconds. Kirsty Weir finished sixth and Rebekah Mackie eighth for the Mountaineers.

Hannah Lawrence came in 14th and Zuzana Sarikova 18th to round out Western State's top five.

Venalainen lowered the course record by 50 seconds with her winning time of 21 minutes, 33.6 seconds. She is the first repeat winner since Western State's Elva Dryer placed first in 1992 and 1993.

North Dakota was led by Becky Leppard, who finished second, nearly nine seconds behind Venalainen. The runner-up team finish was North Dakota's best in the championship, following three fourth-place efforts.

UC Davis placed third with 146 points. Yvonne Liebig paced the Aggies by finishing fifth.
