Lynn Dorn, director of women's athletics at North Dakota State University, has been selected as chair of the Division II Project Team to Study Membership Growth Issues.

Dorn is a former Division II vice-president who also served as the original chair of the Division II Management Council when the Association restructured in 1997. She recently completed her 22nd year at North Dakota State.

The project team is charged with developing recommendations to manage membership growth in Division II. The issue has more long-term ramifications than short-term since all three divisions recently approved a two-year moratorium on new membership. Also, any institution applying for membership at the conclusion of the moratorium would be required to complete a four-year provisional membership period before becoming an active member.

However, individuals within the membership have expressed concern about the strain that would be placed on the division's educational assessment program if the flow of provisional members to Division II became too large too fast. The Division II educational assessment program currently is designed to accommodate about 12 to 15 institutions annually and 50 in any four-year period.

The membership growth project team's first meeting will be August 20-22 in Denver.

Other members will be Dave Brunk, commissioner of the Northeast-10 Conference; Kaye P. Crook, faculty athletics representative at Coker College; Carol M. Dunn, athletics director at California State University, Los Angeles; Charles Dunn, president of Henderson State University; Bernard W. Franklin, president of Virginia Union University; Jerry M. Hughes, athletics director at Central Missouri State University; David Riggins, athletics director at Mars Hill College; Kay Schallenkamp, president of Emporia State University; Barbara J. Schroeder, athletics director at Regis University (Colorado); and James W. Watson, athletics director at West Liberty State College. A representative from the Division II Student-Athlete Advisory Committee also will be appointed.
