Abilene Christian ran its Division II Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships winning streak to five by edging St. Augustine's, 80-77, March 10-11 in Boston.

The Wildcats led St. Augustine's, 76-67, heading into the meet-ending 1,600-meter relay. While the Falcons won the event, Abilene Christian's unit placed fourth to earn four points and another team title.

It is Abilene Christian's eighth title overall, putting it in the lead in that category as well. St. Augustine's has won seven titles, and kept its streak alive of finishing either first or second in each of the 15 championships.

The three-point victory was the smallest winning margin in the championships' history, and much less than the average of more than 47 points in the previous four years of Abilene Christian's current streak.

The middle distance events were the key to the Wildcats' latest triumph. Abilene Christian racked up 20 points in the mile run, led by Alfred Rugema's meet record of 4 minutes, 2.92 seconds. John Kemboi placed second and Gilbert Tuhabonye fifth behind their teammate.

Kemboi and Tuhabonye were key contributors once again in the 800-meter run. Tuhabonye finished third, while Kemboi earned another runner-up finish. The 14 points Abilene Christian earned in the event pushed it into the team lead for the first time in the meet.

Rugema added a second-place effort in the 5,000-meter run, losing by just over one second to repeat champion Michael Aish of Western State.

Nic Alexander in the 55-meter dash and Terrance Woods in the high jump also were individual champions for Abilene Christian.

St. Augustine's jumpers highlighted the Falcons' run at the team title. Tim Rusan, Dane Magloire and Lancelot Gooden swept the top three places in the triple jump, respectively, with Rusan establishing a meet record of 53 feet, 7 1Ž2 inches.

Magloire also placed fourth in the long jump, with Maurice English coming in second for St. Augustine's.

The Falcons' Deworski Odom joined Aish as a repeat winner. Odom claimed his third straight title in the 55-meter hurdles, becoming only the third athlete in the championships to win the same events three years in a row.

Women's margin goes from huge to scant

Abilene Christian won last year's Division II Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships by 75 points, the largest margin of victory in NCAA women's indoor track and field history.

This year, the Wildcats finished first again, only this time by the smallest margin in the 18 years of women's track and field championships in all divisions.

Abilene Christian finished its participation in the March 10-11 championships in Boston with 48 points, with several events still remaining to be contested. The Wildcats had to delay the celebration of their eighth consecutive title until after the meet's final event, when North Dakota State concluded with 47 points.

North Dakota State placed second in the 1,600-meter relay, which it needed to win to claim its first team championship. St. Augustine's, which placed third with 44 points, defeated the Bison by 3.58 seconds in the decisive relay.

Abilene Christian won its 12th Division II championship with strong showings from its jumpers. Maresa Cadienhead finished second in the high jump and Hillerie Shelton was the runner-up in the triple jump.

Dawnyel Newhouse, who added a third-place effort in the long jump and a fourth-place mark in the triple jump, supported their efforts.

Shawntel Newhouse continued Abilene Christian's dominance in the 55-meter hurdles by winning with a time of 7.81 seconds. Newhouse's title followed four straight victories in the event by fellow Wildcat Delloreen Ennis-London and wins by current Abilene Christian assistant coach Sylvia Dyer in 1988, 1989 and 1991.

Meredith Garner and Jane McNeil contributed 12 points to the winning effort by placing second and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault.

North Dakota State earned more than half of its points in the shot put and 20-pound weight throw. Julia Karst-Gray was second and Molly Peppel third in the shot put behind repeat champion Heather Leverington of Emporia State.

Diandra Bauer was second and Peppel fifth in the 20-pound weight throw for the Bison. The second-place team finish was the best in the championships' history for North Dakota State.

Lana Jekabsone of Lewis was the only other 1999 champion to repeat in 2000, as she won the 800-meter run. Freshman Nikita Lewis of Slippery Rock made an impressive debut by capturing both the long and triple jumps.
