Now a different team from the same state, Georgia Tech, holds the top ranking going into the championships. Northwestern, last year's third-place team, is ranked second. Georgia is in the No. 6 spot. Northwestern's Luke Donald won the 1999 individual title with a score of 284 and is currently ranked second behind Georgia Tech's Matt Kuchar.

Sophomore Candy Hannemann, who finished second last year for medalist honors, returns with classmate Beth Bauer, who is currently the No. 2 individual golfer in the nation, to help Duke defend its title. Arizona State ranks among the top of polls even after losing 1999's individual winner Grace Park and two other top scorers from last year. Miriam Nagl is leading the way for the Sun Devils, who have won six of the last 10 team titles.
