Field: The team championship is composed of 64 teams. Individual championships consist of 64 singles players and 32 doubles teams. Single-elimination tournaments will be played at 16 first- and second-round sites (four teams at each site) and the finals site (16-team bracket) to determine the national champion.

Dates and sites: Regionals will be held at campus sites May 13-14. Quarterfinals, semifinals and finals will be held at the University of Georgia, May 20-28.

Information/results: The fax-on-demand telephone number is 770/563-1133 (pin code 1915); request numbers are 1530 for bracket/schedule and 1531 for ticket information. Championships results will appear in the June 5 issue of The NCAA News.

Championships notes: Stanford had held the No. 1 spot after a 5-2 victory over California in early March and then lost it after sitting idle for three weeks. In Stanford's absence from play, its rivals to the south, the UCLA Bruins, took advantage and grabbed the top ranking. After defeating the Bruins back in February, Stanford coach Dick Gould said, "UCLA has a great team and I'm sure they'll get back at us this year." Stanford has since regained the top spot. Florida also will be a strong contender. Georgia, the 1999 champions, fell out of the top-25 rankings with upset losses to an unranked Indiana State squad and to Division II champion Lander.
