Milestones: The University of Northern Iowa's 5-3 win over Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in baseball May 6 was the school's 1,000th in its 101-year history. Northern Iowa coach Rick Heller also won his 300th career game during the year and now stands at 314-227-3 in 13 seasons. The 2000 campaign was Heller's first as skipper of the Panthers. He compiled a 291-194-3 record in 12 seasons at Upper Iowa University.

Miscellaneous: The University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, School of Education has established the Frank R. Comfort Scholarship Fund, a full tuition merit scholarship for an undergraduate student enrolled at the school. An award will be made annually to a student who exhibits distinguished academic achievement. Comfort, who has coached the men's and women's swimming teams at North Carolina for 23 years, has earned 13 women's and 10 men's Atlantic Coast Conference championships and became the winningest swim coach in the history of the ACC. "I thought it would be great to tell a student, 'Your tuition is paid,' " Comfort said. " 'Now with one less thing to worry about, you can concentrate on the important issues of your educational experience.' " He has endowed a similar scholarship at Syracuse University in honor of his mother. A 1967 alumnus of Syracuse, Comfort was a three-time swimming letter-winner for the Orangemen. The next year, while earning a master's degree in physical education from the North Carolina School of Education, he coached the Tar Heels' freshman men's swimming team to an undefeated season.
