Facilities: A former Ball State University student-athlete and his wife have contributed $1 million to the school's pledge campaign for a training facility located within the football stadium complex. John and June Scheumann pledged the gift toward the facility that will be dedicated to the football team but offer training opportunities for other university athletics teams. John Scheumann is a former Ball State defensive tackle who graduated in 1971. He currently is the chief executive officer of Crossman Communities, an Indianapolis company that provides housing and financing for first-time home buyers. Ball State also has announced a $4.35 million pledge from two benefactors to extend the school's wellness programs, create professorships and expand the football stadium. Included in the stadium initiative is a new press box and the addition of luxury suites and more concession areas ... The University of Montana athletics department has received one of its largest cash gifts from a local attorney and his wife. The $550,000 pledge will go toward the completion of the department's office complex. The gift provides funding for about 40 offices for coaches and administrative staff.

Sports sponsorship: The University of California, Irvine, has announced that it will add women's golf and women's indoor track and field, effective in the 2001-02 academic year. The addition of the two sports will coincide with the reinstatement of baseball at UC Irvine. In addition, the school previously announced the addition of women's water polo for the 2000-01 season. The additions bring to 23 the total number of varsity sports offered at the school, 11 men's sports and 11 women's sports, as well as a co-ed sailing team. A search for a women's golf coach will begin in May, while the current women's outdoor track and field program will have increased staffing under track and cross country director Vince O'Boyle.

Milestones: California State University, Fresno, head baseball coach Bob Bennett recorded his 1,200th career victory with a 9-5 triumph over Rice University.

Miscellaneous: Mississippi Valley State University has announced that it will rename its football stadium the Rice-Totten Stadium in honor of former Delta Devils football players Jerry Rice and Willie Totten. Rice, currently with the NFL's San Francisco 49ers, and Totten, a former player with the Buffalo Bills, helped the Delta Devils set many NCAA records during their playing days from 1983 through 1985. The renaming of the stadium also coincides with the school's 50th anniversary.
