LSU staged a dramatic rally on the final day of the Division I Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, capped by Keisha Spencer's win in the triple jump, to earn its 12th title May 31-June 3 at Duke.

The Tigers scored 46 of their 58 points in the nine finals contested June 3.

Southern California, which enjoyed its best finish with 54 points, held a 54-48 lead over LSU after the final track event, the 1,600-meter relay. However, Spencer ended the Trojans' hopes for a team title by covering 45 feet, 10 inches with her championship-clinching leap.

"I didn't put any pressure on myself," said Spencer, who also won the triple jump in the 2000 indoor championships. "It's just an amazing feeling to go out and help my team win a national championship."

LSU's effort also was sparked by individual victories by Peta-Gaye Dowdie in the 200-meter dash and Joyce Bates in the 100-meter high hurdles. Dowdie also placed second in the 100-meter dash, and both women ran legs on the Tigers' second-place 400-meter relay unit.

"This was a very special weekend for us," said LSU head coach Pat Henry, who became only the second coach in Division I history in all sports to accumulate 20 NCAA titles. "Any time you win one of these it takes a combination of things.

"Our ladies knew what was at stake, knew there was absolutely no margin for error and simply exceeded anything we could have asked of them."

Southern California's runner-up finish bettered its third-place performances of last year and 1987. Angela Williams won the 100-meter dash for the Trojans. She was the only repeat champion from 1999.

Natasha Danvers was another individual champion for Southern California, and the Trojans' 400 relay unit also placed first.

The meet also featured UCLA's Seilala Sua, who became the career leader in individual titles in Division I women's outdoor track and field history. Sua captured the shot put and discus throw, repeating her 1999 double.

Sua won the discus throw in each of her four seasons, becoming only the second competitor in the 19-year history of the championships to win the same event four times. Wisconsin's Suzy Favor finished first in the 1,500-meter run from 1987-90.

Adding her two crowns in the shot put, Sua's six total victories bettered Favor's collection of five. Favor also won the 800-meter run in 1990.

Kara Wheeler of Colorado was another double winner at this year's championship, heading the field in both the 3,000- and 5,000-meter runs.

Meet records were set by UCLA's Tracy O'Hara in the pole vault (14 feet, 5 1Ž4 inches), Southern Methodist's Florence Ezeh in the hammer throw (211 feet, 10 inches) and UTEP's Angeliki Tsiolakoudi in the javelin throw (197 feet, 8 inches).
