Individual's record score propels Cowboys to dramatic team title

Led by a tournament-record performance by medalist Charles Howell, Oklahoma State captured its ninth Division I men's golf title May 31-June 3 at the Grand National Lake Course in Opelika, Alabama.

While the individual title was not in doubt -- Howell won by eight strokes -- the team championship was pushed to a playoff. Georgia Tech pursued the Cowboys for much of the day, making up eight strokes with a final-round 276, compared to Oklahoma State's 284.

Oklahoma State held a one-shot lead heading into the last two groups, but the Cowboys' Landry Mahan sent his approach shot over the 18th green into the bleachers and two-putted for bogey. In the final group, Howell overshot the green in the same area of Mahan's shot, but after a solid chip, Howell saved par and kept the team scores all square with the Yellow Jackets.

That set up the sudden-death playoff, played on the 18th hole. The Yellow Jackets recorded four pars on the par-4 hole, but freshman J.C. DeLeon birdied for the Cowboys, which made the difference.

"Every time we win I think this will probably be the last one," said coach Mike Holder, who has led the Cowboys to eight of their nine titles. "About halfway through today, I thought, 'I don't know how much more of these I can take.' "

Howell, a junior, fired a final-round 69 for a 23-under total of 265. That score shattered the NCAA tournament record of 17-under, shared by PGA Tour stars John Inman of North Carolina, Phil Mickelson of Arizona State and Justin Leonard of Texas. Minnesota's James McLean also shared the record.

"I wanted to do this as an individual, but it wouldn't have meant half as much if the team didn't win it," said Howell, who was the only player to shoot in the 60s in all four rounds.

"He played golf like I've never seen for 72 holes," Holder said. "I've had the privilege of coaching great players, and that performance he put on was surreal."

The Cowboys avenged the disappointment they tasted after dropping a five-stroke advantage to Georgia on the tournament's final day last year.

The championship was the second playoff in NCAA history. In 1995, Oklahoma State beat Tiger Woods and Stanford. This was the first tournament in which the individual champion played on the winning team since Mickelson accomplished the feat with Arizona State in 1990.

Oklahoma State and Georgia Tech bettered UNLV's two-year-old record of 34-under par by three strokes. Arizona finished two shots back in third place after shooting 33-under over the final two rounds. Houston finished six shots back (30-under 1,122) on the strength of the final day's best round of 16 under. Texas placed fifth with a 1,125 total.

Houston's Chris Morris finished with a 66 for second place, eight shots back. Three players tied for third at 13-under 275: Northwestern's Jess Daley, Arizona's Ricky Barnes and Texas' David Gossett.
