Georgia women's swimmers give performance to be remembered

Georgia's senior co-captain Kristy Kowal set the tone for the Division I Women's Swimming and Diving Championships when she said, "If (Georgia's) going to make us seniors leave, we're going to make sure we're remembered."

Kowal and her fellow Lady Bulldogs did just that by winning nine of 21 events to secure their second consecutive NCAA title March 18 in Indianapolis. Georgia finished with 490 1Ž2 points, holding off Arizona (472) and 1999 runner-up Stanford (397).

Georgia clinched the title in the last event of the meet, the 400-meter freestyle relay. Arizona needed to win the event and have Georgia finish sixth or lower to claim the title. With the pressure of avoiding a false start, Georgia might have been less aggressive in the race. But Courtney Shealy, senior co-captian for Georgia said, "Going into it, we said, 'forget about getting fifth place; we're going to win this race.' "

The Bulldogs did and closed the door on Arizona.

Shealy earned three individual titles with wins in the 50- and 100-meter freestyles and the 100-meter backstroke. She also swam a leg for Georgia's winning 400-meter medley relay team. Meanwhile, Kowal bettered her own performance from the 1999 championships by adding the 200-meter individual medley title to repeat wins in the 100- and 200-meter breaststrokes. She also contributed to her team's win in the 400-meter medley relay. Both Kowal and Shealy were named co-Swimmers of the Meet.

As was the hope of the NCAA Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Committee, the decision to conduct the meet in short-course meters resulted in record-setting swims. California's 200-meter medley relay team set a world-record time of 1:40.18. Georgia's time of 3:57.46 in the 400-meter medley relay was a world's best. Several American records also were set during the course of the meet, which might be a good indicator of things to come. The U.S. Olympic trials will be held at the same natatorium in August.

Because this is the first time the meet has been held in short-course meters, there will be two sets of meet records kept. The frequency with which future championships will be held in short-course meters has yet to be determined. Georgia coach Jack Bauerle said, "I welcome the short-course meters. I'd even like for it to stay in meters because it behooves us internationally to race that course."

And Arizona coach Frank Busch said, "Short-course meters are a tremendous advantage to our sport, but I am still a traditionalist who would hate to see the yards go."

Other top performances came from Columbia-Barnard's Christina Teuscher, who equaled her 1998 efforts with wins in the 400-meter freestyle and 400-meter individual medley. Nevada's Limin Liu won the 100- and 200-meter butterflys.

In diving, LSU's Jamie Watkins and Ashley Culpepper won the one- and three-meter springboards, respectively. Jenny Keim took the platform title for Miami (Florida) and finished second in the one-meter springboard.
