Second-ranked Georgia stopped previously unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Stanford to capture the program's second national title with a 5-4 win at the Division I Women's Tennis Championships May 18-26 in Malibu, California.

"What a battle it was," Georgia head coach Jeff Wallace said. "Our players came out here on a mission, and they just believed."

After splitting the singles, 3-3, Georgia took the lead when the duo of Esther Knox and Aarthi Venkatesan captured a quick 8-3 win at No. 2 doubles. Stanford's Lauren Kalvaria and Gabriela Lastra returned the favor and evened the match by scoring a comfortable 8-2 decision at No. 3.

In the deciding doubles finale, Georgia's second-ranked duo of Marissa Catlin and Lori Grey bolted to a 6-1 advantage, only to find themselves suddenly down, 7-6, to Stanford's fourth-ranked Teryn Ashley and Marissa Irvin. Catlin-Grey battled for an 8-8 tie, fell behind 2-0 in the tiebreaker, then rallied for a 7-3 triumph to garner the title.

Individual doubles play produced the first three-time NCAA champion as California's Amy Jensen teamed with Claire Curran to defeat Catlin-Grey in the final. Jensen also won for the Bears in 1998 and 1999 with former teammate Amanda Augustus.

"I am awfully happy right now," Jensen said. "Claire really carried us during some of the tough points of the match. It was a tremendous effort, and the team from Georgia gave us all we could handle."

This was the third time Catlin lost in the individual doubles final.

In singles competition, Stanford freshman Laura Granville became the ninth Cardinal player to win the women's singles title by defeating teammate Irvin, 6-0, 6-4. Granville won the first 10 games of the match -- and had a 22-game winning streak stretching back to her semifinal victory over Georgia's Aarthi Venkatasen -- before surviving a late comeback attempt by Irvin, the nation's No. 1-ranked player and top tournament seed.

"Having Laura and Marissa advance to the championship match makes a strong statement about the quality of the women's tennis program at Stanford," Cardinal head coach Frank Brennan said.

This marked Irvin's second consecutive singles final setback.

Georgia's team title is the second in school history. The Lady Bulldogs, 27-2 this season, previously won on their home courts in Athens in 1994, defeating Stanford by the same 5-4 margin in the final.

Defending-champion Stanford, 30-1, had its 46-match winning streak snapped and was denied its 11th NCAA crown.
