Crazy eights -- Stanford sheds runner-up role to snap Arkansas streak

The NCAA News

Stanford had finished second in the Division I Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships eight times since winning its last title in 1934. Arkansas had won the crown eight consecutive times heading into the 2000 meet.

But those roles were reversed May 31-June 3 at Duke as Stanford captured its fourth championship with 72 points to the runner-up Razorbacks' 59. Auburn placed third with 51 points, one more than fourth-place Florida.

Stanford has been traditionally strong in the middle and long-distance events, and this year's squad was no different. Except for Toby Stevenson's second-place finish in the pole vault, the Cardinal's points were compiled in the 800- through 10,000-meter runs.

Leading the way was Brad Hauser, the meet's only double winner. Hauser won the 10,000, which he also won in 1998, and the 5,000. His brother, Brent, placed fourth in both events.

"We've been waiting five years for this (winning the national title)," said Brad Hauser. "This is what drives us, the team competition.

"We've had this goal for a long time. Finally, we're on top."

Gabe Jennings and Michael Stember finished first and second, respectively, in the 1,500-meter run for Stanford. Stember added a fourth-place finish in the 800 and Jason Balkman was second to Brad Hauser in the 10,000.

"I am overwhelmed," said Stanford director of track and field Vin Lananna. "The men's team performed like champions.

"Every race was key, and I am so proud of what we accomplished."

Arkansas' charge for a potential record-tying ninth consecutive championship was led by Melvin Lister. The 1999 winner in the long jump added a victory in the triple jump this year, and placed fourth in the long jump.

Auburn received first-place performances from Gabor Mate in the discus throw, his second consecutive title in the event, and Avard Moncur in the 400-meter dash. Bernard Williams won the 100-meter dash for Florida and also was a member of the Gators' victorious 400-meter relay team.

Mate was one of three competitors to repeat their 1999 individual championships. South Carolina's Terrence Trammell in the 110-meter high hurdles and Texas' Mark Boswell in the high jump also earned their second straight victories.

There also were three athletes who returned to the victory stand after winning in 1998. In addition to Brad Hauser in the 10,000, Libor Charfreitag of Southern Methodist in the hammer throw and Esko Mikkola of Arizona in the javelin once again rose to the top spot in their events.
