In weather perhaps better suited for the NCAA skiing championships, Arkansas trekked the slippery slope and won its third straight Division I Men's Cross Country Championships November 20 at Iowa State.

Braving temperatures in the teens and a wind-chill factor below zero, four Razorbacks placed among the first 24 finishers to give Arkansas its Division I-best 11th championship overall.

The Razorbacks scored 83 points to edge Colorado's total of 94. The 11-point advantage marked Arkansas' smallest margin of victory in a championship since a 10-point win over Arizona for its first title in 1984.

Senior James Karanu was the first Arkansas runner to finish, completing the 10,000-meter course in 30 minutes, 42.7 seconds and in 11th place. Fellow seniors Sharif Karie and Murray Link were close behind, finishing 13th and 16th, respectively.

Daniel Lincoln gave the Razorbacks a big lift by turning in the race's second-best finish by a freshman, placing 24th overall. Ryan Travis rounded out the scoring for Arkansas, posting a 34th-place effort.

The title is the 36th Division I championship won by Arkansas in either men's cross country, men's indoor track and field, or men's outdoor track and field, all of which have come with head coach John McDonnell at the helm.

McDonnell said his squad remained focused on its own performance rather than worrying about what other teams would do. "We don't look for anybody. I thought we had to have five runners finish in the top 30 and that is exactly what we did," he said.

"We did exactly what we planned to do. We got out in the beginning, stayed up in the pack. In the end, we faded a little bit, but then we came back. They did what they had to do."

The weather played a significant role in the race, according to Link. "The wind was really bad and it really did affect the race," he said. "Once we turned into the wind, guys would fall back and then somebody else would step up. That was how the race was won."

Colorado was led by Jorge Torres, who finished third. The Buffaloes, still looking for their first title in 30 appearances, equaled their 1994 runner-up finish.

Keith Kelly became Providence's first individual champion in the 62-year history of the meet. Kelly, who registered a time of 30 minutes, 14.5 seconds, edged Fairleigh Dickinson's Stephen Ondieki by 1.8 seconds. Defending individual champion David Kimani of Alabama was fourth, only two-tenths of a second behind Torres.

Kelly's title pushed Providence to third place in the team scoring with 121 points. The Friars were followed by Stanford (149) and Wisconsin (167).
