Championships notes: Last year, Alaska Fairbanks swept both the smallbore and air rifle events, setting a meet-record aggregate team score of 6,276 to end West Virginia's four-year hold on the team title. The Nanooks return an experienced squad and a powerful contender in Kelly Mansfield, the 1999 smallbore and air rifle champion. In late January, they defeated Tennessee-Martin and set a school record with a score of 6,289. West Virginia, ranked second in the preseason coaches' poll, is looking to regain the title. Murray State and Norwich are looking to contend as well.
