Scoring used in international gymnastics, the FIG Code of Points, will be used without NCAA modifications for the 2001 season. The NCAA Men's Gymnastics Committee voted during its annual meeting in Indianapolis July 6-8 to discontinue modifications to the scoring system for collegiate competition.

The committee still is considering the possibility of scoring enhancements being added that currently are being used in USA Gymnastics competitions, such as a bonus for landing without error. The committee will conduct a conference call with NCAA men's coaches after the Olympics to review the NCAA rules for 2000-01.

The national qualifying average will be figured slightly different for next year's championships. The average will be calculated by selecting the three highest scores, counting no more than one home meet. Previously, one of the three scores had to be from a home meet.

The committee voted to change the grouping of events for the Friday night of competition. Group one will include floor exercise, pommel horse and rings. Group two will include vault, parallel bars and high bar. The competition will continue to consist of six rotations of six groups with no more than two events in progress at one time. The committee wanted to reorganize the events to avoid a lapse in the action of the meet.

Meeting with Ron Galimore of USA Gymnastics, the committee discussed ways to enhance the relationship between USA Gymnastics and the NCAA. Ideas for strengthening the relationship included USAG grants to conferences sponsoring men's gymnastics; automatic-qualification status to USAG competition for NCAA qualifiers; establishment of USAG national team camps on college campuses; USAG-sponsored scholarships for student-athletes; USAG displays/clinics at the NCAA championships; and international gymnastics competitions on college campuses to promote the sport.

In other actions, the committee:

Discussed the schedule for soliciting bids for the 2003 championships to be conducted April 10-12. Potential hosts should contact Wayne Burrow, NCAA assistant director of championships, at the national office for more information. Bids are due to the national office by February 1, 2001.

Agreed to forward a recommendation in February to the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet to increase the fee for judges from $125 to $140 per session.

Noted that a committee vacancy will be available starting September 1, 2000. The committee encourages potential candidates to contact their conference office in order to be nominated.
