Penn State used outstanding performances from its women in all three weapons and a pair of top-four efforts from its men to record its sixth consecutive National Collegiate Men's and Women's Fencing Championships title March 23-26 at Stanford.

The Nittany Lions ended with a team score of 175 points, edging runners-up Notre Dame and St. John's (New York) by four points. Stanford placed fourth with 163 points, and Princeton took fifth with 133. The second-place finish was the fifth straight for Notre Dame.

Penn State, coached by Emmanuil Kaidanov, has won eight of the 11 team titles since fencing became an NCAA combined championship in 1990.

Freshman Jessica Burke highlighted the Nittany Lions' women's showing by winning the individual epee championship. Burke topped two St. John's opponents in the medal rounds to win the title. She nipped Arlene Stevens in the semifinals, 15-14, and edged Emese Takcs, 15-13, in the first-place bout.

Stephanie Eim finished third in women's epee for Penn State after placing second in 1999.

Carla Esteva and Charlotte Walker both advanced to the medal rounds of the women's foil. Walker lost to eventual champion Eva Petschnigg of Princeton, 15-14, and Esteva fell to 1999 titlist Monique de Bruin of Stanford, 15-8, in the semifinals.

In the championship bout, Petschnigg ended de Bruin's hope of repeating with a 15-13 win.

Stephanie Tam placed sixth and Austin O'Neill was 11th for Penn State in the women's sabre, which was contested for the first time in the championships. Caroline Purcell of MIT won the event with a 15-6 triumph over North Carolina's Kim Treiber in the championship bout.

Daniel Landgren took a similar path as Burke to capture Penn State's second individual title. Landgren won the men's epee competition by beating a pair of St. John's fencers in the medal rounds. He upended Doron Levit, 15-11, in the semifinals and defending champion Alex Roytblat, 15-12, in the finals.

Penn State's Gang Lu added a fourth-place finish in men's foil. He lost, 15-9, to Felix Reichling of Stanford in the semifinals. Reichling went on to repeat as champion by outpointing Ozren Debic of Notre Dame, 15-10.

The men's sabre title went to Gabor Szelle of Notre Dame. He registered 15-12 victories in both of his medal-round bouts -- over St. John's Ivan Lee in the semifinals and Jakub Krochmalski of Wayne State (Michigan) in the final.
