It was a record-setting few days for teams and participants at the 2000 National Collegiate Men's and Women's Rifle Championships at VMI March 9-11.

Alaska Fairbanks defended its title and in doing so set a meet-record aggregate team score of 6,285. It is the third title for the Nanooks, the only team other than West Virginia to win since 1988.

In the air rifle team competition, Alaska Fairbanks continued its dominance by setting a record aggregate score of 1,578 behind the efforts of Matt Emmons (391) Per Sandberg (394) Melissa Mulloy (395) and Kelly Mansfield (398).

Mansfield, the defending champion in both the individual smallbore and air rifle events, which are held separate from the team championships, retained her title in air rifle, but relinquished the smallbore crown to Nebraska freshman Nicole Allaire. Both Mansfield and Allaire set meet-records with their efforts.

Other schools with strong showings were second-place Xavier (6,156) and third-place Nebraska (6,121). Perennial powerhouse West Virginia, owner of 13 championships, entered just the team smallbore competition and placed sixth (4,603) behind Norwich (6,070) and Navy (6,059).
