Calvin enjoys repeat as women's cross country champion

Calvin enjoyed the view from the top so much that it decided it would stay there a while longer.

The Knights, who won their first Division III Women's Cross Country Championships team title last year, repeated as champion in 1999 with a 34-point victory November 20.

Wisconsin-Oshkosh hosted the championships at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winnecome, Wisconsin.

Rhaina Echols of Chicago captured the individual championship with a margin of nearly 22 seconds over Carolyn Jones of UC San Diego.

Just as in 1998, Calvin's winning effort was led by Lisa Timmer and Amy Mizzone. Timmer came in 10th and Mizzone 12th last year. The pair of seniors reversed the order in 1999, as Mizzone placed sixth and Timmer 12th.

Supporting the top two Knights were senior Elizabeth Kuipers in 29th place, junior Sarah Gritter in the 49th position and sophomore Erinn Boot claiming the 50th spot.

With the championship, Calvin became just the fourth institution in the championships' 19-year history to win more than one title. Cortland State heads the list with seven, while St. Thomas (Minnesota) and Wisconsin-Oshkosh each have placed first four times.

The Knights' total of 85 points was followed by Middlebury with 119. The top two Middlebury finishers were sophomore Jessica Johnston and freshman Kaitlin Gregg, who placed 15th and 16th, respectively.

Echols blew past the field on the 5,000-meter Lake Breeze course in 16 minutes, 46.2 seconds. The senior, who was third in 1998, became Chicago's first individual champion.

Jones, a freshman, placed second in 17:08.1, just a half-second ahead of Cortland State sophomore and defending champion Cheryl Smith. Senior Mickey Kelly of Cortland State claimed fourth place with a time of 17:10.7.
