Cardinals step up for third straight men's cross country title

Significant improvements by North Central's top two runners over their 1998 finishes enabled the Cardinals to win their third consecutive Division III Men's Cross Country Championships team title November 20.

The championships were conducted at Lake Breeze Golf Course in Winnecome, Wisconsin, with Wisconsin-Oshkosh serving as the host institution.

With Colin Young placing second and Tim McCoskey third, North Central totaled 84 points. Keene State was second with 100 points, edging Wisconsin-La Crosse by a point for the runner-up spot.

Dave Davis of Puget Sound finished nearly 10 seconds ahead of Young to win the individual championship.

Last year, Young took 15th and McCoskey 29th. In 1999, Young covered the 8,000-meter course in 23 minutes, 51.9 seconds. McCoskey, a junior, was just 1.4 seconds behind his teammate.

The Cardinals also received strong performances from senior Charlie Carliff, who placed 26th, and sophomore Jeremy Borling, who claimed the 30th position.

North Central has now won 12 titles, far and away the most in Division III men's cross country history. Wisconsin-Oshkosh is second with three championships.

In addition, the Cardinals have appeared in the championships in each of the 27 years it has been contested and finished first, second or third 26 times.

Keene State was sparked by senior Scott Jensen and junior Wilson Perez. Jensen, who was ninth in 1998, was fifth this year in 23:58.7. Perez jumped to 12th place after ending 23rd last season. The second-place team finish was Keene State's best in 10 championship appearances, bettering its sixth-place effort in 1975.

Wisconsin-La Crosse's top finisher was senior Dan Peso in the sixth position.

Davis helped make Puget Sound's first appearance in the Division III championships a memorable one. The senior posted a winning time of 23:42.3.
