Adams State women run to eighth consecutive crown

Adams State continued its domination of the Division II Women's Cross Country Championships by racking up its eighth consecutive title November 20 at Missouri Southern State.

The Grizzlies added a new twist to their run of crowns by posting the lowest winning score in the 19-year history of the championships. With 23 points, Adams State won by 24 over Western State. The Mountaineers claimed second place for the fourth consecutive championship and the sixth time in the last eight years.

Kennesaw State's Marjo Venalainen used a spurt late in the 6,000-meter race to win the individual championship.

Adams State had four finishers in the top 10 to pull closer to equaling Cal Poly's division record of 10 consecutive championships, set from 1982-91. Sophomore Kim Bosen was second behind Venalainen with a time of 20 minutes, 51.2 seconds. Bosen made an improvement of 32 positions over her 34th-place finish as a freshman last year.

Sarah Parkey, a junior, took fourth for Adams State in 20:53.0. She was third in 1998. Cory Chastain, also a junior, was seventh, while senior Melissa Bouren moved up from 23rd in 1998 to ninth this year.

The Grizzlies' fifth finisher was senior Esther Hartsky in 13th place.

Western State had a pair of top 10 performers. Senior Jennifer Michel placed fifth and sophomore Lorraine Randlett 10th. Michel came in ninth last year.

Venalainen passed Bosen in the final 100 yards to become Kennesaw State's first individual champion. Her winning margin was just three seconds over Bosen.

South Dakota sophomore Molly Wedel was third with a time of 20:52.9.
