Cole gains Tennessee-Martin softball post

Tennessee-Martin has selected Amy Cole as head softball coach.

Cole has been attending graduate school for the past two years and is a former member of the Silver Bullets Women's Professional Baseball Team. She also has spent two seasons competing with the Durham Dragons of the Women's Professional Softball League.

Cole played collegiate softball at North Carolina, where she was a four-year letter-winner. Additionally, she earned all-Atlantic Coast Conference recognition in 1994 and was a member of the ACC Honor Roll.

After graduating from North Carolina with a bachelor of arts degree in political science, Cole served as an assistant coach at North Carolina-Charlotte for two seasons. She is scheduled to graduate in December from Tennessee-Martin with a master's degree in school counseling.



GENERAL

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

St. Andrews hired Rick Johnson as director of athletics to succeed Mark Peeler, who joined the men's basketball coaching staff at Erskine. Johnson, who also will serve as head basketball coach at the school, has been director of athletics and head men's basketball coach at Tennessee Temple University ... Al Walker, Chaminade athletics director and head men's basketball coach, announced plans to step down from both positions at the end of his contract term next summer. The school appointed Aaron Griess as Walker's replacement. Griess has been assistant athletics director and associate head basketball coach.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS

San Francisco State hired Kathleen Heitzman, compliance coordinator at Cal State Northridge, as senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director for compliance. Heitzman replaces Randi Lydum, who will continue as head cross country and women's track and field coach ... Robin Potera appointed as senior woman administrator and head women's basketball coach at Texas Wesleyan. Potera most recently coached at Austin ... Greensboro elevated Jean Lojko to senior woman administrator and assistant director of athletics. During the past 18 seasons, Lojko has coached volleyball and women's tennis at the school.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE

Boston College awarded Paul Spagnoli responsibilities as faculty athletics representative to succeed Joseph F. Quinn.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

UC Irvine promoted Petrina Long to senior associate athletics director. Long will retain senior woman administrator duties ... Mark Griffin was elevated to associate athletics director at New Jersey City. Griffin has been assistant athletics director since 1992 ... Camie Bechtold elevated to associate athletics director at Saint Joseph's (Indiana) to replace Bill Massoels. Bechtold will retain head women's soccer coaching duties ... Georgia State's Blaine Hughes announced plans to retire as associate athletics director.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Jeff Bernstein named as assistant athletics director for sports information at New York University ... Lynn Griffin awarded additional duties as assistant athletics director at St. Andrews. Griffin currently is senior woman administrator and head women's basketball coach ... D'Youville selected John Hutton as assistant director of athletics/recruiting coordinator. Hutton will retain head men's volleyball coaching responsibilities ... Tom Hathaway promoted to assistant athletics director for media relations at Cincinnati. Hathaway has been sports information director since 1980.

COACHES

Baseball assistants -- Dartmouth appointed Tony Baldwin as an assistant coach ... George Mason hired Joe Raccuia as top assistant coach. Raccuia, who succeeds J.J. Picollo, has been the top assistant coach at George Washington for the past three years.

Men's basketball -- Alfred Johnson announced as interim head coach at St. Mary's (Maryland) for the 1999-00 season. For the past two seasons, Johnson has fulfilled assistant coaching duties at Tuskegee ... Texas Wesleyan selected Terry Waldrop as head coach to replace Dennis Krishka. Most recently, Waldrop was an assistant at Southeastern Louisiana ... Washington & Lee announced the resignation of head coach Kevin Moore, who also was head golf coach. The school appointed Jeff Lafave as interim head men's basketball coach.

Men's basketball assistants -- Jeff Dunlap named as an assistant coach at Georgia ... Dartmouth selected Michael Lombard as an assistant coach ... St. Andrews added Rodney Knox as an assistant coach and added Casey Coleman and Dwayne Osborne as volunteer assistants. Knox also will work as head men's and women's cross country coach ... Robert Davenport, Clay Martin and Spencer Wright added as assistants at Texas-Pan American ... Brian Pickering selected as an assistant coach at Keene State. For the past three years, Pickering has been a volunteer assistant coach with the program ... Karl Radday added as an assistant at Penn State-Behrend. Radday, who succeeds Greg Curley, has been an assistant at Hamilton for the past two years ... Wesley appointed Christopher Wentworth as associate head coach. For the past six seasons, Wentworth has been the top assistant with the program.

Women's basketball -- Charleston Southern appointed Larry Riggs as interim head coach while head coach Fred Francello recovers from surgery ... Mark Herr added as head coach at D'Youville.

Women's basketball assistants -- Jennifer Stamp added as an assistant coach at Dartmouth ... Rhode Island appointed K.C. Jones as an assistant coach. Jones, a former National Basketball Association player and head coach, most recently was head coach of the New England Blizzard of the now disbanded American Basketball League ... William Kirnie selected as an assistant coach at Brockport State ... Keene State hired Alice Adams and Ed Tenney as assistant coaches. Adams has been competing with the team for the past three years, and Tenney has spent the past nine years as a head girls' basketball coach at the high-school level ... Thiel chose Michael Szenborn as an assistant coach. Szenborn has been coaching and officiating at the high-school level since 1991 ... Steve Pochatko selected as an assistant coach at D'Youville.

Men's and women's cross country assistant -- Lamar selected Agapius Amo, a two-time Olympian, as assistant cross country and track and field coach.

Football -- Pat Henderson, defensive coordinator at Tulsa, elevated to interim head coach to replace Dave Rader, who was released as head coach.

Men's and women's golf -- Loyola (Illinois) chose Pat Dorgan as head men's coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey assistant -- Brockport State added David Evans as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's lacrosse assistant -- Michelle Burleson hired as a women's assistant at Holy Cross. Burleson has been coaching at the high-school level for six seasons.

Softball--Bloomfield appointed Anthony J. Nesto as head coach. Nesto has been an assistant varsity coach at the high-school level.

Softball assistants -- Tammy Lohman hired as an assistant at Bradley to replace Dirk Welch. Lohman competed with the Carolina Diamonds of the Women's Professional Softball League last year ... Bloomfield chose Jennifer J. Citarella as an assistant coach.

Men's and women's tennis -- San Francisco named Eric Kwait as head women's coach to replace Scott Howard, who accepted head coaching duties at Texas-Pan American. Kwait has been men's and women's assistant tennis coach at Johnson County (Kansas) Community College and teaching professional at the Overland Park Racquet Club ... Akron appointed Anthony Fox as head women's coach. Fox, who replaces Frank Polito, has been head women's tennis coach at Siena for three years.

Men's and women's track and field assistant -- Alonzo Webb Jr. added as assistant coach at Kent. Webb has been working at the River City Elite Track Club in Pittsburgh, which he established, and coaching cross country and track and field at the high-school level.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Kris Zeiter elevated to head women's coach at Concordia (New York). Zeiter, who has been an assistant with the program, most recently has been head coach on an interim basis ... Kim Walker resigned as women's head coach at East Carolina. The school named Jenny Parsons as interim head coach.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- George Mason hired Chris Tischler as a men's assistant and named Jeff Rockwell as a volunteer men's assistant.

Wrestling assistants -- North Carolina selected John Lange as an assistant ... Roger Williams hired Keith Medeiros as an assistant. Medeiros is a May 1999 graduate of the school.

STAFF

Academic services -- Cincinnati selected Bryan Dansberry as assistant director of academic and student development. Dansberry most recently coached varsity boys' basketball at the high-school level.

Advancement -- Arthur Haas chosen as senior advancement associate at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Haas most recently was director of revenue management for the Omni Hotel at CNN Center in Atlanta.

Assistant athletic trainer -- Mark Andreozzi named interim assistant athletic trainer at Roger Williams. Most recently, Andreozzi served as head athletic trainer for the Cincinnati Mighty Ducks of the American Hockey League.

Club sports -- Drexel chose Chris Calciano as coordinator of club sports.

Compliance -- Chad Morin appointed as compliance director at Texas Wesleyan ... UC Irvine promoted Keith Shackleford to director of compliance.

Intramural -- Dan Magee named intramural manager for special events and club sports at New York University.

Life Skills -- Tiffany Gibson added as Life Skills coordinator at Akron. Gibson, who replaces Gerald Yearwood, has been assistant athletics director and Life Skills coordinator at Centenary.

Marketing/promotions -- St. Joseph's (Pennsylvania) named Chris Branscome as director of marketing and promotions.

Media relations assistant -- St. John's (New York) named Mike Carey as assistant director of media relations.

Operations -- UC Irvine awarded assistant director of operations and equipment services duties to Curtis Lezama.

Sports information -- Jim Miller added as director of sports information at Lebanon. Miller has been assistant to the executive director of the Middle Atlantic Conference and succeeds Tom Hanarahan ... Jason Rich elevated to sports information director at Siena. Since July 1998, Rich has been marketing/sports information assistant.

Sports information assistants -- San Francisco hired Ryan McCrary to succeed Kyle McRae as associate sports information director. McCrary has been assistant sports information director at San Diego since 1998 ... Cincinnati appointed Jeremy Hartigan as assistant sports information director and Kimberly Moser as sports information intern.

Ticketing services -- Akron chose Scott Hogue as director of athletics ticket operations to replace Brian Moore. For the past three years, Hogue has been assistant box office manager for the National Basketball Association's Cleveland Cavaliers and Gund Arena.

CONFERENCES

Jason Jacobsmeier named as sports information director at the Heartland Conference and at Texas Wesleyan.

The Mid-Continent Conference appointed Ed Grom as associate commissioner for internal affairs. Grom has fulfilled several positions with the athletics department at Missouri-Kansas City for 12 years, including serving as interim athletics director during the 1998-99 school year.

The New England Small College Athletic Conference chose Andrea Savage as its first administrative director. Savage has been senior assistant director of athletics at Yale since 1996.

ASSOCIATIONS

The National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators installed Bridget Belgiovine, president-elect for the past year, as president for the 1999-00 term. Belgiovine currently serves as assistant chief of staff for Division III at the NCAA. The organization also installed the following positions: Judy Sweet, UC San Diego, president-elect. The National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics is hosting its annual Facilities, Fund-Raising and Marketing workshop November 14-16 in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The seminar includes 12 sessions that will focus on various aspects of designing and renovating facilities and on fund raising and marketing issues related to facilities. Notables

The National Association of Collegiate Women Athletic Administrators selected Janet Justus as national administrator of the year. Justus, former NCAA director of education outreach, was one of seven district administrator of the year honorees, which included: District 1 -- Rita Castagna, Assumption; District 2 -- Connee Zotos, Drew; District 3 -- Deborah Yow, Maryland; District 4 -- Barbara Hedges, Washington; District 5 -- Alfreeda Goff, Midwestern Collegiate Conference; and District 6 -- Kathy Lindahl, Michigan State.

The organization also selected the following as 1999 Lifetime Achievement award winners: Della Durant, Penn State; Kit Green, Washington; Nell Jackson, Binghamton (posthumous); Fran Koenig, Central Michigan; Luella Lilly, California; Mary Pavlich Roby, Arizona; Maria Sexton, Wooster; Mary Jo Wynn, Southwest Missouri State. This award is presented annually to retired athletics administrators who committed their professional careers to advancing women in sport.


DEATHS

Donald H. Riddle, former chancellor at Chicago-Illinois, passed away recently at the age of 78. Riddle was chancellor from 1975 to 1982 and also was formerly president at John Jay.

Former Stevens Institute coach and professor Frank Partel passed away August 22 at the age of 87. Partel coached basketball for 25 years, tennis for 21 years and squash for eight years, in addition to serving as professor of physical education. He retired from the school in 1973.

Payne Stewart, professional golfer, died in an airplane crash October 25. Stewart, 42, played collegiate golf at Southern Methodist and was the winner of the 1999 U.S. Open.
