GENDER EQUITY

Report shows women trailing in participation and resources

Women's sports participation and the financial resources provided for female student-athletes remain well below male levels, according to the recently released 1997-98 NCAA Gender-Equity Report.

The biannual report shows that women's athletics participation in Division I increased to 40 percent , up from 37 percent in the 1995-96 study.

DIVISION I

Management Council examines amateurism, basketball issues

The Division I Management Council took its first look October 18-19 at important legislative packages involving basketball issues and the deregulation of amateurism rules.

Because of the significance of both packages and the impact that the proposals could have on the Division I membership, the Council took steps to allow the entire Division I membership to react to both matters.

The Council tabled the amateurism deregulation package until April 2000 as a way to ensure a meaningful forum at the January Convention. Also, it initially approved the basketball issues package solely to initiate the comment period without taking an official position on the substance of the package as a whole.

The meeting was the first for the Management Council as a 49-member body. It also was the first use of a new Division I legislative calendar, which permits legislation to be acted upon only at the April and October meetings.

The Council also approved a proposal precluding a sports committee from obtaining a waiver of the "Sunday competition rule."
