The Wildcats, fourth in the FinishLynx preseason rankings, are the leader in both team and individual champions with seven each. Brigham Young received all 12 first-place votes in the FinishLynx poll, but was edged, 31-33, by second-ranked Stanford at the Cougars' Triple Crown Invitational in mid-September. Julia Stamps, who finished sixth in the 1998 championships, and Lauren Fleshman placed first and second, respectively, to key the Cardinal victory.
