Barry hires Neveu to lead women's soccer

Mike Neveu has been hired as head women's soccer coach at Barry, succeeding Brian Dooley.

Neveu presently serves as associate director of the Cardinal Soccer Club in Cincinnati, where he is responsible for training and coaching 43 teams. He also is head coach of the Cardinal Premier under-16 team.

Neveu, a former assistant women's soccer coach at Fairfield and Cincinnati, played collegiate soccer at Brockport State. He lettered three seasons and captured all-academic honors at the school in 1991.

Neveu has a bachelor's degree in physical education with a concentration in sports management, and he holds an 'A' coaching license and a national youth license from the United States Soccer Federation. Neveu earned a master's degree in sports management from Northern Colorado in 1994.

Varnell has been coordinator for multicultural programs for athletics at Nebraska for the past four years ... Barbara Young, head men's and women's tennis coach at Lafayette, selected as senior woman administrator and assistant director of athletics at the school. Young has been women's head coach for 25 seasons and men's head coach for three seasons.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Trinity (Connecticut) assistant athletics director, head field hockey coach and head women's lacrosse coach Robin Sheppard relinquished coaching duties to accept a promotion to associate athletics director. Sheppard compiled a 240-67-13 mark in field hockey and a 213-68-5 record in lacrosse ... Quinnipiac elevated Linda J. Wooster to associate director of athletics and recreation. Wooster, who has been assistant athletics director for the past six years, also is senior woman administrator at the school ... Chris Denari resigned as associate athletics director for marketing and events at Butler.

Dennis Toney appointed as assistant athletics director at VMI. Toney has been assistant athletics director at Massachusetts since 1996 ... Men's and women's fencing -- Harvard chose Peter Brand as head men's and women's coach succeeding Ben Zivkovic, who stepped down after 23 seasons. For the past six years, Brand has served as head men's and women's coach at Brown.

Field hockey -- David Foley named as first full-time coach at Saint Louis, effective August 2. Foley has been head coach at Catholic ... Franklin & Marshall announced the resignation of Kara Tierney as head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach to fulfill the same capacity at Trinity (Connecticut). Tierney, who has been with the Franklin & Marshall programs since the 1996-97 academic year, will succeed Robin Sheppard at Trinity (Connecticut) ... Streya Hart resigned as head coach at Westfield State ... Martha Kerrik chosen as head coach at Moravian.

Football assistants -- Shawn Weigel added as defensive backs coach at West Texas A&M. Weigel has been an assistant at Austin for the past five seasons, including serving as defensive coordinator, linebackers coach and strength and conditioning coach in 1998 ... David Wood promoted to assistant head coach and named head golf coach at Widener. Theriault was head coach at Western New England and most recently was an assistant at Northfield Mount Hermon School ... Chris Bates elevated to head coach at Drexel after serving in an interim capacity since May 1999. Bates, who replaces Randy Voigt, has played lacrosse professionally with the Philadelphia Wings of the National Major Indoor Lacrosse League ... Byron Collins chosen as head men's coach at Stevens Institute. Collins, who was associate head lacrosse coach at the school during the 1999 season, succeeds Dean Witty.

Men's and women's track and field -- Dereck Chavis appointed as men's and women's track and field coach at Hope. Chavis, who has been a graduate assistant track and field coach at Indiana State since 1997, replaces Mark Northuis as head men's coach and Donna Eaton as head women's coach. Northuis will retain duties as head men's and women's cross country coach and will coach distance runners during track season. Eaton will continue to serve as women's golf coach ... Barry Collins resigned as head coach at Lamar, effective July 31. Collins, who was an assistant with the program from 1980-91, has been head coach for eight years ... Penn State women's head coach Teri Jordan announced plans to retire from coaching to become coordinator of disability programming and assistant coordinator of the Multi-Sports Complex at the school. Jordan has been head women's track coach since 1984 ... Central Washington cross country coach Kevin Adkisson accepted additional duties as interim men's and women's track and field coach. Adkisson succeeds John Picha, who requested reassignment in order to spend more time as defensive coordinator of the football team. Academic services -- Tracy Robinson chosen as director of the student academic enhancement program at Southern Mississippi.

Administrative -- North Carolina selected Arthur Johnson as assistant to the athletics director.

Athletic trainers -- Todd France appointed as head athletic trainer at Rockford. France has been part-time athletic trainer at Rockford since 1988 and most recently has been director of the Sports Institute of Northern Illinois since 1990 and head athletic trainer and assistant director of basketball operations for the Rockford Lightning of the Continental Basketball Association ... Bill Drake resigned as athletic trainer at Nevada to take a similar position at Washington State.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Drexel elevated Cesar Nava to full-time assistant athletic trainer. Since January 1998, Nava has been a part-time athletic trainer ... Mike Vittorino hired as an assistant athletic trainer at Robert Morris. Vittorino completed a master's degree in athletic training at California (Pennsylvania) in May and has served as head athletic trainer at Uniontown High School.

Communications -- Akron appointed Melanie Schneider as assistant director of athletics communications. Schneider, a sports information intern at Fresno State in 1998-99, succeeds Amy Symons.

Communications assistants -- Colin McDonough selected as an athletics communications intern at Akron.

Facilities assistant -- Akron hired Michael Pechac as a facilities and operations intern.

Sports information -- Matt Daskivich named as sports information director at Gettysburg. Daskivich has been assistant director of college relations/sports information director at Elizabethtown ... Geoff Hassard appointed as sports information director at Oneonta State. For the last five years, Hassard has been sports information director at Worcester Polytechnic ... Centre appointed Ed Rall as sports information director. For the past 11 years, Rall has been an assistant football coach and head baseball coach at the school ... Danielle Barney announced as sports information director at Lock Haven. Since 1997, Barney has been sports information graduate assistant at Edinboro ... Austin Peay chose Cody Bush as sports information coordinator ... Chapman chose Doug Aiken as sports information director. Sports medicine -- Butler promoted Bruce Willard to director of sports medicine replacing Ralph Reiff. Willard has been assistant athletic trainer for the past six years.

CONFERENCES

Mike Anderson appointed as assistant sports information director at the Gulf South Conference. Anderson, who succeeds Tammy DeGroff, was with the Patriot League.

The Mid-Continent Conference added Dustin Bozwell as assistant commissioner for external affairs. Bozwell most recently served as assistant director of marketing/athletics ticket manager at Western Illinois.

Bill White selected as coordinator of officiating for the California Collegiate Athletic Association. For the past two years, White has been coordinating officiating in the conference's South region. The conference awarded commissioner Robert J. Hiegert, who is beginning his third year as commissioner, a three-year contract extension and reappointed Joe Lang as director of media relations for the 1999-2000 academic year.

The Mid-American Conference chose Bryan McGowan as assistant media relations director, effective August 1. McGowan has been assistant sports information director at Southern Illinois since 1995.

Conference USA chose Stephanie Vlach as compliance and championships assistant and James Jackson as information services assistant. Vlach has worked with the Illinois-Chicago athletics department for the past year, and Jackson has been assistant director of sports information at Arkansas-Pine Bluff since August 1997.

The American Southwest Conference hired Dan Lathey as director of media relations to succeed Michael Ziegler. Lathey, who also will serve as assistant director of media relations for the Lone Star Conference, has been assistant sports information director at Air Force.

Brian Briscoe elevated to assistant commissioner at the Lone Star Conference. Briscoe, who has been director of media relations for the conference, will retain media relations duties.

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference announced Machli Joseph as administrative fellow for championships and marketing, Julie Griffin as administrative fellow for compliance and Ken Taylor as administrative fellow for ice hockey and media relations. Joseph has been a graduate assistant for men's basketball at East Stroudsburg, Griffin has been an assistant women's basketball coach at Springfield, and Taylor has been a compliance assistant at Michigan.

The North Coast Conference named Keri Alexander and Sue Penicka as assistant directors.

Beth DeBauche promoted to associate commissioner and Leann Cook elevated to assistant commissioner at the Southeastern Conference. The conference also appointed Leslie Pigg as administrative assistant for compliance and Allyson Quinn as administrative assistant for media relations.

ASSOCIATIONS

The National Soccer Coaches Association of American hired Allison Koester as public relations/promotions intern and Mike Parsons as director of coaching education.

Kelly D. Krauskop, president of Host Communications, Inc. women's sports, resigned to become president of the Women's National Basketball Association team in Indianapolis.

Candice Kwok named administrative assistant at the Silicon Valley Bowl. Kwok has been an athletics administrator at California for the past year and a half.

Jack Fleming, football broadcaster at West Virginia, named recipient of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame's 1999 Chris Schenkel Award. The honor is given to a "broadcaster who has had a long and distinguished career broadcasting college football, with ties directly to colleges and universities." Fleming, a 47-year veteran of broadcasting, has won seven West Virginia Sportscaster of the Year Awards.

Jim Kramer, Northern Iowa strength and conditioning coach, selected as the National Strength and Conditioning Coach Association's Professional of the Year. Kramer, who has been with Northern Iowa since July 1997, qualified for the honor by being named Missouri Valley Conference strength and conditioning coach of the year last fall.

Chris Voelz, women's athletics director at Minnesota, was named by CityBusiness as one of the 25 most influential women in business in the Twin Cities. The recipients were nominated by peers and were selected based on their impact on the community and performance in their positions. Voelz has been women's athletics director at the school for 12 years.

Mary Barrett, an athletics administrator at Massachusetts-Boston and Boston State College, named as the 1999 Katherine Ley Award winner. The honor recognizes a women's athletics administrator who demonstrates leadership abilities and who is a strong proponent of women's issues and a role model for women coaches and administrators. Barrett was the first woman elected as president of the Eastern College Athletic Conference in 1985 and has served on the NCAA Executive Committee in 1992 and the NCAA Council. She also was chairperson of the Division III championships committee.


DEATHS

Wilbur "Pony" Wilson, former head men's basketball coach and athletics director at Rutgers-Camden, died July 31 after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. Wilson, 66, lead the men's basketball program in three different stints totalling more than 18 years. He served as athletics director from 1969 to 1998.
