Golf committee selects regionals for 2000, 2001

The Division I Men's and Women's Golf Committee selected future sites for the men's championships and clarified policies for inclement weather at women's championships during its annual meeting June 26-29 in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

The men's subcommittee awarded 2000 and 2001 men's regional sites and selected the site for the 2005 men's finals.

The committee selected the following sites for the 2000 regionals: East -- Glenmaura National Golf Club, Moosic, Pennsylvania (Temple University, host); West -- Riverbend Golf Course, Fresno, California (California State University, Fresno, host); and Central -- Karsten Creek, Stillwater, Oklahoma (Oklahoma State University, host).

The 2001 regionals also were selected: East -- Royal New Kent, Williamsburg, Virginia (Virginia Commonwealth University, host); West -- Trusting True Golf Club, Corvallis, Oregon (Oregon State University, host); and Central -- Victoria Country Club, Victoria, Texas (Southwest Texas State University, host).

The 2005 finals site was awarded to Caves Valley Golf Club, with Loyola College (Maryland) serving as host.

The subcommittee also voted to eliminate a cut during the tournament, allowing all finals participants to play for the full 72 holes. The subcommittee feels the additional per diem expenses will be offset by significantly lower airfare costs.

Women's subcommittee

The women's subcommittee clarified its stance regarding inclement weather during championships play as follows:

  • Regional play. The games committee will make every effort to complete 54 holes by Saturday. If 54 holes cannot be completed, the committee will advance teams and individuals by the following: (1) 36-hole scores; (2) 18-hole scores; and (3) selection criteria.

  • Finals. The games committee will make every effort to complete 72 holes. This may include making a cut.

The subcommittee also reaffirmed that the low four scores per round from the designated five-player teams shall continue to be used in Division I tournaments. If a play-six, count-four format is used, the coach must designate his or her top five players. If this is not done, the first five players listed on the lineup sheet will be used for scoring purposes.

In other actions, the subcommittee voted to allow the designated coach to shuttle players to and from restrooms when extended rulings and emergencies occur during the championships competition.

The subcommittee also will recommend to the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet that the Mission Inn Golf and Country Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, Florida, be the site of the 2001 finals. Stetson University and the Central Florida Sports Commission will be co-hosts. The course was the host for the 1999 Divisions II and III Women's Golf Championships.

The subcommittee also voted to allow a host to request a waiver to use golf carts during regular-season tournaments. The tournament director must send a written request to Dianne Dailey, subcommittee representative from Wake Forest University, at least 90 days in advance of the time an answer is needed.
