North Carolina A&T names Scandrett

North Carolina A&T appointed Alfonso Scandrett as athletics director, effective July 1. Scandrett takes over for interim athletics director Hornsby Howell.

Scandrett has led the athletics department at Buffalo State since 1997. Prior that, he served as associate athletics director for student services at Texas Tech. He also worked as professor and chair of the department of health, physical education and recreation at Minnesota State-Mankato from 1980 to 1991, in addition to serving as basketball coach at the school. Scandrett also was a professor of health education at Northern Iowa.

Scandrett earned a bachelor of science in human biokinetics and master's degrees in administration from Northern Iowa and in health education from Minnesota State-Mankato in 1974 and 1975, respectively. In 1993, he earned a doctor of philosophy in public health education and epidemiology from Oregon.

CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS

William D. Adams resigned as president at Bucknell, effective June 30, 2000 ... North Carolina appointed William O. McCoy acting chancellor. McCoy formerly served as vice-president for finance for the University of North Carolina system ... Ivory V. Nelson named president at Lincoln (Pennsylvania). Nelson has been president at Central Washington.

DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Marian selected Doug Hammonds as acting athletics director and acting assistant dean for student athletics programs. Hammonds has been an assistant basketball coach at the school for 10 years and head women's volleyball coach for five years ... Montclair State named Holly P. Gera as director of athletics. Gera has held various positions since joining the school in 1989, including director of campus recreation, assistant athletics director, associate athletics director and acting athletics director.

ADMINISTRATOR

Marcie Reynolds elevated to senior woman administrator and assistant athletics director for promotions and marketing at Southern Colorado.

ASSISTANT DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

John Born resigned as athletics director and head men's soccer coach at Milwaukee School of Engineering. Born, who has been with the school for nearly five years, accepted responsibilities as head men's soccer coach and director of athletics development at North Park ... Southern Colorado promoted Les Morken to assistant athletics director for business management and Todd Kelly to assistant athletics director for sports information and home event manager. Morken has been assistant to the athletics director since 1995, and Kelly has been sports information director since 1991 ... Dan Trump elevated to assistant athletics director at Loyola Marymount. Trump has been compliance and eligibility coordinator for two years.

COACHES

Baseball -- Marian promoted assistant Ron Herr to head baseball coach and athletics compliance coordinator ... Pete Wilk elevated to head coach at Georgetown to replace Kirk Mason, who resigned after six years. For the past two years, Wilk has served as an assistant.

Men's basketball -- Fordham hired Bob Hill as head coach. Hill, who has been head coach of the National Basketball Association's San Antonio Spurs, Indiana Pacers and New York Knicks, has most recently worked as consultant with the New Jersey Nets and as a color commentator for several national television networks.

Men's basketball assistant -- Marietta hired Greg Woodard as an assistant coach to succeed Patrick Rufener. Woodard has been head boys basketball coach at the high-school level for four seasons.

Women's basketball -- Karen Hall named head coach at North Carolina A&T. Hall, who succeeds Tim Abney, spent the 1998-99 season as head basketball coach at Wayne State (Michigan) ... Dickinson hired Devonna Williams as head coach. Since 1996, Williams has been an assistant women's basketball coach at Pennsylvania ... Carolyn Mair resigned as head coach at Shippensburg to become an assistant coach at West Virginia. Shippensburg appointed five-year assistant coach Kristy O'Hara as Mair's replacement ... Albertus Magnus selected Jim Ferraro as head coach for
the 1999-00 season. Ferraro coached at Bridgeport last season.

Women's basketball assistants -- Dan Muscatell named as an assistant at Oregon to succeed Stephanie Osburn Norman, who was an assistant for seven seasons and will serve as recruiting coordinator. Muscatell has spent the last five years as a head boys high-school basketball coach ... Binghamton chose Rich Conover as an assistant coach. Conover was head coach at Oneonta State.

Men's and women's crew -- Patrick Kelly hired as head men's and women's coach at Loyola Marymount. Last season, Kelly was an assistant women's rowing coach at Southern California.

Men's and women's crew assistant -- George Washington named Angela Hart as assistant coach in charge of coaching women's novice. Last year, Hart served as volunteer coach for lightweight women's crew at the school.

Men's and women's cross country -- Jim Jones added as head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Salisbury State. For the past five years, Jones has been head cross country and track and field coach at Muskingum.

Equestrian -- Anderson named Juliette Holden as head coach.

Football assistants -- Findlay appointed Greg Gilbert and Cal Dietz as offen-
sive line coaches. Gilbert has been offen-
sive coordinator, offensive line coach and football recruiting coordinator at Walsh University, and Dietz has spent the last two years as a graduate assistant strength and conditioning coach at Minnesota ... Eric Eidsness selected as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at South Dakota State. Eidsness, who succeeds Jeff Menage, was offensive coordinator at Ferris State last season... Jerry Sandusky, defensive coordinator at Penn State since 1977, announced plans to retire following the 1999 season. Sandusky was an assistant football, basketball and track coach at Juniata from 1967-68 and offensive line coach at Boston University in 1968. He joined Penn State as an assistant in 1969 and plans to continue to work with the athletics department's Life Skills and Continuing Outreach programs on a volunteer basis.

Men's and women's golf -- Tarleton State hired Troy Jones as head women's coach. Jones previously served as groundskeeper in charge of maintenance of field and practice facilities at the school ... Jackie Seawell, head men's golf coach at Anderson, accepted additional duties as head women's coach.

Men's and women's ice hockey -- Wisconsin-Eau Claire named Marlin Muylaert as head coach to replace Ian Perrin, who resigned after nine seasons. Muylaert has coached at the University of Guelph in Ontario for 11 seasons.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Doug Carl selected as head men's coach at Marietta. Carl, who succeeds Jeff Monteroso, has been coach and president of the Cumberland (Pennsylvania) Valley High School lacrosse program since 1996.

Men's soccer -- John Born resigned as athletics director and head men's soccer coach at Milwaukee School of Engineering. Born accepted responsibilities as head men's soccer coach and director of athletics development at North Park.

Women's soccer -- Rick Burns accepted the head coaching post at Gordon. For the past five years, Burns has been head women's coach at Drury.

Softball assistants -- Stetson added Vanessa Glasscock and Jennifer Krull as assistant coaches. Glasscock has been head coach at Charleston Southern for three seasons, and Krull graduated from Stetson in May.

Men's and women's track and field -- Jim Jones named head men's and women's cross country and track and field coach at Salisbury State. For the past five years, Jones has been head cross country and track and field coach at Muskingum.

Men's and women's track and field assistants -- Robert Morris named Drew Dershimer as an assistant. For the past three years, Dershimer has been a part-time assistant at the school ... Greg Stringer promoted to full-time assistant coach at Southern Mississippi to replace James Blackwood. Stringer was a part-time assistant coach
at the school last year ... James Blackwood chosen as an assistant coach at Texas-San Antonio. Blackwood has been head cross country coach and assistant track and field coach at Southern Mississippi since 1997.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants -- South Dakota State appointed John Skatrud as an assistant to replace Greg Whitis, who resigned. Skatrud has been head coach at North Dakota State College of Science.

STAFF

Athletic trainer -- Jim Gallaspy announced plans to retire following the 1999 football season after 25 years as athletic trainer at Southern Mississippi.

Assistant athletic trainers -- Southern Mississippi chose Matt Smith as associate/
assistant athletic trainer. Smith, who has been an assistant athletic trainer with the National Football League's Atlanta Falcons for five years, is scheduled to succeed Jim Gallaspy as head athletic trainer in January.

Marketing -- Tracy Pear announced as corporate relations and marketing manager at Loyola Marymount. For the past year, Pear has been assistant ticket manager at Long Beach State.

Sports information -- Lake Superior State hired Paul Thomas as sports information/marketing director. Thomas, who replaces Jamie Joss, has been a communications assistant with the Midwestern Colle-
giate Conference.

Sports information assistants -- Jamie Bataille named assistant director of sports information at Stetson. Bataille has been a graduate assistant in the athletics media relations office at Memphis ... South Carolina-Aiken selected Brad Fields as an intern in the sports information office ... Alan Ashby accepted responsibilities as sports information assistant at Cleveland State. For the past three years, Ashby has been a member of the Penn State sports information office.

Strength and conditioning -- Loyola Marymount added David Moore as strength and conditioning coach. Moore has been head strength and conditioning specialist at Marquette.

Ticket services -- Shawn Carty named athletics ticket manager at Pennsylvania. Carty has been director of ticket operations for the Erie Sea Wolves, a minor-league baseball team.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Jim Johnson promoted to membership services representative II, effective July 5. Johnson has been a membership services representative ... John Cochrane selected as assistant director of championships, effective July 5. Cochrane has been a membership services representative with the Association ... Damani Leech named as a member-
ship services representative. Leech has been an intern with the NCAA ... Beth Altstadt added as an accountant. Altstadt was a staff accountant with Avantec, Inc. in Carmel, Indiana ... Kathy Ray announced as operations and events manager for the Hall of Champions. Ray was director of catering and convention services for the Hyatt Regency in Indianapolis ... Kim Johnson hired as a network administrator. Johnson most recently has been a microcomputer systems analyst at Purdue ... Kimberly Rivers named group sales coordinator for the Hall of Champions. Rivers was sales manager and conference services manager for the Omni Severin Hotel in Indianapolis.

ASSOCIATIONS

The National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators announced the following as officers for 1999-00: Chris Plonsky, president, senior associate director of men's athletics at Texas; Doug Ihmels, first vice-president, associate athletics director/development, Cal State Bakersfield; Gary Friedman, second vice-president/treasurer, associate director of athletics at Central Michigan; Steve Sullivan, third vice-president/secretary, director of marketing/
promotions at Arizona. The organization also selected Leslie Wurzberger, director of marketing and promotions at Washington, as a member of the board of directors ... Mary Klever promoted to associate director of the athlete services division of the United States Olympic Committee. The athlete services division is newly created.


NOTABLES

Marcy Weston, senior associate director of athletics at Central Michigan for 10 years, has been elected to the National Association of Sports Officials board of directors. Weston is the NCAA national coordinator of women's basketball officiating.


DEATHS

Leon "Red" Romo, athletic trainer at Navy from 1956 until his retirement in 1997, died July 11 after a three-month illness. He was 78.

James K. Myers, a former coach at West Virginia Wesleyan, died June 17 after a lengthy illness. Myers coached men's soccer, swimming, golf and basketball during his tenure at the school. He also completed an interim stint as athletics director in the 1970s.
