Smith to retire from Washington State

Samuel H. Smith, an active member in the NCAA governance structure, announced plans to retire as president at Washington State, effective July 1, 2000.

Smith has been president at Washington State since 1985. Before his tenure at the school, he completed a 16-year stint at Penn State, serving initially as faculty member, then as a department head and ultimately as dean of the College of Agriculture. Smith also was a faculty member at California.

Smith's NCAA service began in 1994, when he was chosen as a Division I representative to the Presidents Commission. In 1997, he was elected chair of the Executive Committee, a post he held until his term expired in January of this year.

Smith, who is chair-elect of the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges, earned a bachelor's degree in plant pathology from California in 1961 and a doctorate in 1964 from California in the same area of study.

Cathie Schweitzer named acting director of athletics at Springfield to replace the retired Edward Bilik. Schweitzer has been associate athletics director at the school since 1996 ... Tampa hired Larry Marfise as director of intercollegiate athletics and intramural sports to replace Hindman Wall, who announced retirement plans, effective July 31. Marfise has been athletics director at Ferris State since 1994 ... Kevin White received a two-year contract extension as athletics director at Arizona State. White, who has held the position since March 1996, will continue at the school through at least June 30, 2004 ... Eastern Michigan hired David L. Diles as athletics director ... Bill Gehling
promoted to director of athletics at Tufts. Gehling, who replaces the recently retired Rocky Carzo, has been associate director of athletics since 1989 and head women's soccer coach since 1979 ... Ferris State's Tom Kirinovic accepted responsibilities as interim athletics director.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATORS

North Carolina-Greensboro promoted Cathy Roberts to senior woman administrator/associate athletics director for operations. Roberts has been assistant athletics director for facilities since 1992 ... Theresa Garlacy elevated to senior woman administrator/assistant director of athletics at Bryant. Garlacy will retain duties as head volleyball coach, a position she has held since 1996 ... Karla K. Gavin promoted to senior woman administrator and athletics media relations director at Upper Iowa. Gavin has coached softball and volleyball and served as an instructor at the school for the past seven years.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE

Harry Lehwald named faculty athletics representative at Anderson to succeed Ellen King.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTORS OF ATHLETICS

Georgia Tech chose Steve Orsini as senior associate athletics director to succeed Jeff Bourne, who became athletics director at James Madison. Orsini has been associate athletics director and treasurer at the U.S. Naval Academy Athletic Association since 1994 ... John Ruppert promoted to associate director of athletics at Bryant. Ruppert has been assistant director of athletics at the school since September 15, 1998 ... North Carolina-Greensboro elevated Bud Hall to senior associate athletics director and Ty Buckner to associate athletics director for public affairs. Hall, who has been associate athletics director for business and men's golf coach since 1987, will relinquish head coaching duties. Since March of 1995, Heller has been assistant to the athletics director for compliance and facilities at Slippery Rock ... Coastal Carolina selected Brad Bross as an assistant director of athletics for development ... Ken Wilson accepted the position of assistant athletics director for sports services at Nevada ... Mount Holyoke hired Carol Ann Beach as assistant athletics director. Since 1994, Beach has been head women's basketball coach and assistant to the athletics director at Connecticut College ... Hennon, who replaces Jack Stallings, has been head coach at Western Carolina for two years ... Trinity (Texas) promoted interim head coach Tim Scannell to full-time head coach. Scannell joined the program in 1996 as an assistant coach ... Missouri Western State appointed Buzz Verduzco as head coach, replacing Doug Minnis. Verduzco has been an assistant baseball coach at Washington State ... Northwest Missouri State selected Darin Loe as head coach ... Ed Ward appointed as head coach at Felician ... For the past two years he has guided only the men's programs ... Dawn Abernathy-Fassbinder elevated to head men's and women's cross country and track coach and HPER instructor at Upper Iowa. Abernathy-Fassbinder, an assistant coach for two years at the school, replaces Dan Hostager, who accepted an assistant cross country/track position at Drake.

Field hockey -- Dickinson hired Alison Hoff Risser as head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach to replace interim coach Kris Carroll. Risser was head field hockey, assistant women's lacrosse and physical education instructor at Bryn Mawr.

Field hockey assistant -- Louisville selected Christy Utter as an assistant coach.

Football -- Westminster (Pennsylvania) head coach Gene Nicholson will miss the 1999 season for medical reasons. The school appointed assistants Sean Kelly and Scott Renninger as interim co-head coaches for the season ... Plymouth State hired Chris Rorke as head coach. Rorke, who replaces Mike Kemp, has most recently served as assistant head coach/offensive coordinator at Illinois Wesleyan ... Florida Atlantic named Howard Schnellenberger as its first head coach. Schnellenberger, former head football coach at Miami (Florida), Louisville and Oklahoma, has been director of football operations at the school since 1998 ... Clifton Gilliard chosen as interim head coach at Prairie View A&M to replace Greg Johnson, who was suspended.

Football assistants -- Sam Bernardi named associate head coach at Valparaiso. Bernardi begins his ninth year with the program and will continue to serve as defensive coordinator and linebackers coach ... Westminster (Pennsylvania) added John Klein as assistant defensive coach. Klein was offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Hiram during the 1998 season ... Andy Buh appointed secondary coach at Nevada to replace Tom Mason, who was promoted to defensive coordinator for the program ... Minnesota-Duluth hired John Steger as defensive coordinator. For the past seven seasons, Steger has been the defensive coordinator at Wisconsin-Eau Claire.

Men's and women's golf -- Chris Brauner appointed interim head men's coach at North Carolina-Greensboro to succeed Bud Hall, who was promoted to senior associate athletics director. Brauner has been an assistant with the program for two years.

Men's ice hockey assistant -- Troy MacCormick replaces Andre Bourgeault
as graduate assistant coach at Canisius. MacCormick has been playing in the Central Hockey League for the past two seasons ... Garett MacDonald and Steve Nelson added as assistants at Colorado College. For the past three seasons MacDonald has been an assistant at Northern Michigan, and Nelson served as head coach of the North Iowa Huskies of the United States Hockey League during the 1998-99 season.

Men's and women's lacrosse -- Marietta named Doug Carl as men's head coach.

Men's and women's skiing -- William McDonnell, former coach at Saint Michaels, accepted duties as head ski and cross country running coach at Alaska Fairbanks. McDonnell, who currently is a technical representative for Swix Sport USA, replaces Paul Beberg, who resigned in April.

Men's soccer assistant -- Ashland named Eric Bell as men's and women's assistant soccer coach. For the past two years, Bell has been a graduate assistant coach with both programs.

Women's soccer -- Jane LaBar resigned as head coach at King's (Pennsylvania) ... Coastal Carolina selected Karrie Miller as head coach ... Jillian Ellis chosen as head coach at UCLA ... Mike Neveu appointed as head coach at Barry ... Creighton hired Bruce Erickson as head coach to replace Ira Philson, who resigned. Since February, Erickson has been assistant men's coach at the school ... Martha Whiting promoted to head coach at Tufts to succeed Bill Gehling. Whiting has been an assistant for the past six seasons.

Women's soccer assistants -- Wentworth Institute hired Shawn Martell as an assistant coach. Martell is scheduled to graduate with a bachelor's degree in physical education in August ... Laura Wise accepted assistant coaching duties at Furman.

Softball -- Randy Schneider added as head coach at Wartburg to replace Robin Baker. Schneider has been head softball coach at the high-school level since 1993 and serves as associate director of admissions and transfer coordinator at Wartburg ... Robert Richardson accepted head coaching duties at Framingham State ... Kris Hoff succeeds Karla Gavin as head softball, head women's golf coach and HPER instructor at Upper Iowa ... Youngstown State selected Christy Cameron as head coach.

Softball assistant -- Debbie Holcombe appointed as assistant coach at Anderson. Holcombe most recently coached at Southern Wesleyan and Presbyterian.

Men's and women's squash -- Satindar Bajwa appointed as head men's and women's coach at Harvard ... Craig Thorpe-Clark chosen as head men's coach at Pennsylvania to succeed Jim Masland. Thorpe-Clark has been head men's and women's squash coach at Vassar for four years.

Men's and women's tennis -- Syracuse named Mac Gifford as women's head coach.

Men's and women's track and field -- Angie Taylor selected as head women's track and field and cross country coach. Taylor has been an assistant coach at Princeton since 1995 ... Bowling Green named Scott Sehmann as head women's coach to replace Steve Price. Sehmann has been an assistant men's and women's coach at the school for nine years ... Holy Cross appointed Jim Kavanagh as director of track and cross country in charge of men's and women's cross country and outdoor and indoor track.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Tim Byram chosen as interim head coach at Bates ... Duke added Jolene Nagle as head coach ... Brenda Clements appointed as head women's volleyball and softball coach at Dickinson. Clements has been head volleyball coach at Bluefield College ... Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne announced Kelley J. Assistant equipment manager -- Meghan Dougherty chosen as assistant equipment manager at Kent State. Dougherty has been a graduate assistant in the equipment room at the school for two years.

Communications -- Michigan Tech hired Scott Hirko as assistant director of athletics communications and marketing to succeed Paul Thomas. Hirko was a public relations assistant at the West Coast Conference.

Compliance -- Cornell appointed P.J. Moses as compliance coordinator. Moses served as an athletics administrative intern at Brown in 1998-99.

Operations -- Saint Joseph's (Maine) Mike McDevitt promoted to director of operations for the Harold Alfond Student Center, an athletics facility scheduled to open in August. McDevitt has been an assistant athletics director at the school.

Sports information -- Jamie Joss appointed as sports information director at High Point. Joss has most recently been sports information and marketing director at Lake Superior State ... Samford chose Matt Sullivan as men's sports information director. Since 1997, Sullivan has served as women's sports information director at the school ... Leonard Reich appointed as sports information director at Marian. For the past year, Reich worked in the same capacity at Defiance ... Dickinson tabbed Charles McGuire as director of sports information. For the past year, McGuire has been an assistant in the sports information office at Frostburg State.

Sports information assistant -- Mike Hirschman named assistant sports information director at Delaware. Hirschman most recently was director of public relations for the United Hockey League's Asheville (North Carolina) Smoke.

Strength and conditioning -- Millikin selected Rob Townsend as director of the fitness center and head strength and conditioning coach.

ASSOCIATIONS

The Collegiate Commissioners Association elected Jon A. Steinbrecher as president for a two-year term. The CCA administrates the National Letter of Intent pro-
gram. Steinbrecher is beginning his sixth year as commissioner of the Mid-Continent Conference.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Mary Wilfert hired as program coordinator for education outreach. Wilfert was coordinator of health education for Student Health Services at Western Kentucky ... Amy Folan named as a membership services
representative. Folan has been assistant director of compliance and legislative services at Georgia ... Jim McLaughlin appointed as a graphic designer II. McLaughlin was a graphic designer at Conseco, Inc. in Indianapolis.


NOTABLES

Stanford captured its fifth consecutive Division I Sears Directors' Cup. Adams State was crowned winner in Division II, and Williams earned the Division III title. The honor is presented annually to the top overall Divisions I, II, III and NAIA athletics programs in the nation as determined by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.

Bill Miller, head men's and women's swimming coach at Clarion, was recognized as the recipient of the Richard E. Steadman award presented by the College Swim Coaches Association of America. The award is given annually to a swimming or diving coach at the high-school, club or university level who has done the most to promote the sport of swimming and diving. Miller has been head men's coach for 21 years and head women's coach for 12 years.

The Officers of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Administrators (NACMA) selected Alfred White, commissioner of the Southern Conference, as recipent of the Outstanding Individual Achievement Award.

The National Association of Athletic Development Directors (NAADD) selected the following as award recipients for the 1998-99 year: Don Winston, senior associate athletics director at Southern California, University Division Fund Raiser of the Year; Carol Oakland, director of athletic development at Augustana (South Dakota), College Division Fund Raiser of the Year.


DEATHS

Ricky Byrdsong, a former men's basketball coach at Northwestern, was shot and killed on July 2. Byrdsong, who was coach at Northwestern until 1997, was an executive with a Chicago insurance company.

John M. O'Connor, an assistant track coach at VMI since 1992, died of cardiac arrest on June 29. He was 34. O'Connor, who earned all-America honors in track and field as a student-athlete at Kent State, participated in three U.S. Olympic Festivals and was a member of the United States' track team at the 1989 World University Games.

Southern Indiana faculty athletics representative Charles Bertram died June 29 after suffering a stroke. Bertram was 61.

William R. Reading, former Maryland athletics business manager, died June 19 at the age of 81.

Clayton J. Corder, a senior soccer goalkeeper at Hardin-Simmons, died when another vehicle hit his vehicle from behind as Corder changed a flat tire. Corder, 22, was an elementary education major.
