Senior setter named Honda award winner

Misty May, a senior setter for national champion Long Beach State University, was honored June 14 as the winner of the Honda-Broderick Cup, presented annually to the top female college athlete.

May led the 49ers to a 36-0 record and the 1998 Division I Women's Volleyball Championship. She shared the Most Outstanding Player award at the championship after setting a tournament record with 20 service aces.

May was selected from among 11 finalists for the award.

Regis University (Colorado) volleyball player Melinda Almazan won the award for Division II athletes while Kelly Schade, a softball player for Simpson College, captured the award in Division III.
