Williams completes two-year progression in men's tennis

Williams won its first Division III Men's Tennis Championships team title by defeating Kalamazoo, 4-1, at Claremont McKenna-Harvey Mudd-Scripps Colleges and Pomona-Pitzer Colleges May 19.

The Ephs' title came on their second trip to the championship match and after placing second during last year's competition to UC Santa Cruz. Williams avenged that loss with a 4-3 win in this year's semifinals.

Williams took the lead early against Kalamazoo via two of three doubles wins to earn the doubles point. Williams' Evan Hornbuckle and Dan Matro won the No. 2 doubles, 8-4, and teammates Bill Stebbins and Scott Zinober posted the same winning score at No. 3 doubles.

The Ephs entered the singles competition needing three wins to take home the championship. Freshman Josh Lefkowitz beat Kalamazoo's Dan Harding at No. 1 singles, 0-6, 6-1, 6-1, then Stebbins earned a victory at No. 4 singles by defeating Kalamazoo's Ryan Cummings, 6-2, 6-4. Hornbuckle sealed the championship by downing Toby Ernst, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 6 singles.

Kalamazoo's lone victory came from Ryan Shockley, who defeated Eric Hasenauer at No. 3 singles, 7-6 (4), 6-1.

Last year's champion, UC Santa Cruz, did not go home empty-handed as the Banana Slugs swept the singles and doubles competition.

Thomas Oechel won the singles championship by defeating teammate Brian Cummings, 7-5, 6-0. At the 1998 championships, Cummings lost in the second round of the singles competition and Oechel was ousted during the quarterfinals.

The duo then paired to earn the doubles title the following day. Entering the championship match as the defending doubles champions, Oechel and Cummings fought off Kalamazoo's Cummings and Shockley, 6-2, 6-2.
