Lions keep brooms busy in men's track and field sweep

May is commonly referred to as a sweeps month by the television industry for the purposes of its ratings, but Lincoln (Pennsylvania) can make a similar claim after winning the Division III Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships May 20-22 at Baldwin-Wallace.

The Lions added the outdoor title to the indoor crown they captured in March. It is Lincoln's fourth indoor-outdoor sweep of the 1990s, and its fifth outdoor championship overall. That pulls the Lions into a first-place tie with Rowan and Wisconsin-La Crosse for the most team titles.

In keeping with the sweeps theme, Lincoln also won the 1999 women's outdoor team championship. It marks the first time in Division III history that one institution has won both titles in the same year.

Lincoln, which has finished first or second in every championship but one since 1985, racked up 62 points. Pacific Lutheran, competing in its first meet since becoming an NCAA member, was second with 47, and Nebraska Wesleyan was third with 41.

Dayne Ross and Thomas Thompson were the Lions making the loudest roar. Ross won the 100-meter dash and was third in the 200-meter dash. Thompson repeated as the triple-jump champion and added a runner-up effort in the high jump, an event in which he was the two-time defending champion.

Chris Cobbs and Alonzo Wiggins also contributed mightily to Lincoln's championship by taking first and second place in the 110-meter high hurdles, respectively. Cobbs became the sixth Lions competitor to win the event, the most number of individual champions from one institution in an event in the championship's history.

Pacific Lutheran made its impact felt, particularly in the throws and the decathlon. Luke Jacobson won the discus, finished fifth in the hammer throw and placed sixth in the shot put. The Lutes took three of the top five spots in the decathlon, as Judd Hunter claimed second, Shipley Ennis third and Seth Berghoff fifth.
