From 0 to 54: Lincoln accelerates to women's track championship

If there was a contest for NCAA comeback team of the year, the Lincoln (Pennsylvania) women's track and field team certainly would be a worthy candidate.

After not scoring a point in the Division III Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the past two years, Lincoln rode the exploits of three freshmen to claim its second title May 20-22 at Baldwin-Wallace.

Lincoln collected 54 points for a six-point triumph over 1999 Division III indoor track champion Wheaton (Massachusetts). The Lions' first championship was in 1993, also at Baldwin-Wallace.

First-year performer Rhondale Jones was the Lions' leader, as she became just the second Division III woman to win three events in a single championship. Jones sprinted to victories in the 100- and 200-meter dashes with meet records of 11.79 and 23.72 seconds, respectively.

The Lincoln standout, who won the 55-meter dash and hurdles indoors in March, also claimed the 100-meter high hurdles and anchored the victorious 400-meter relay unit. She joined Christopher Newport's Lisa Dillard as the only triple winners in the 18-year history of the championships. Dillard won the 100 and 200 dashes and the long jump in 1987.

Lincoln's other freshmen contributors were Jalima Levine, second to Jones in the 100 hurdles and another member of the 400 relay team, and Vernick Smith, third in the 400-meter dash.

Wheaton, which was the runner-up for the second consecutive year, was led by Deshawnda Williams, who was second in both the 200 and 400 dashes.

Pacific Lutheran placed third with 44 points, while Calvin and Wisconsin-La Crosse tied for fourth with 39.

The only other meet record was in the high jump, where Middlebury's Kristy Laramee and Hartwick's Maria Megnin both cleared 5 feet, 11 1/4 inches. Laramee won the event based on fewer misses.
