... while Wildcats' depth is key factor in men's championship

Abilene Christian won only one event on the meet's final day but used its depth to capture its third Division II Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships team title in the last four years May 27-29 at Emporia State.

The Wildcats scored in 12 of the 14 events on the last day, including five top-three finishes, to post a total of 93 points. St. Augustine's finished second with 73 points and New York Tech, with four first-place performances, was third with 52.

Either Abilene Christian or St. Augustine's have been the Division II outdoor champion every year since 1982. Abilene Christian also won the Division II indoor title in March and, along with the Wildcats' women's team, repeated their feat of three years ago of winning all four divisional track and field championships in one year.

Terrance Woods recorded Abilene Christian's lone individual win on the third day of the meet in the high jump. Woods and Cal State Bakersfield's David Larsen both cleared 7 feet, 3 inches during the competition, and Woods defeated Larsen in the jump-off with a mark of 7 feet, 13/4 inches.

Wildcats also were at or near the top in the other jumping events. Stephen Moore posted Abilene Christian's only other individual title of the championships in the long jump and Woods placed second in the triple jump. Moore added a second-place showing in the decathlon.

St. Augustine's Deworski Odom and Gabriel Burnett combined for 37 of their team's points. Odom won the 110-meter high hurdles and was the runner-up in the 100-meter dash. Burnett was second to Odom in the 110 hurdles, sixth in the 100-meter dash and second in the 200-meter dash.

Pittsburg State's Brian Moorman won his third straight title in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles, heading a list of five repeat champions. Claiming first places for the second consecutive year were Central Missouri State's Vladimir Golias in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Jeff Sander in the decathlon, Texas A&M-Kingsville's Matt Hickl in the pole vault and Adams State's Jason Hubbard in the 5,000-meter run.

New York Tech teammates Patrick Jarrett and Paston Coke grabbed the top spots in the sprints. Jarrett won the 100- and 200-meter dashes, and Coke broke the tape in the 400 and came in third in the 200. The pair also formed half of New York Tech's 400-meter relay unit, which repeated as champion.

Although Abilene Christian and St. Augustine's remained atop the team standings, the two teams' stranglehold on titles in the 1,600-meter relay was broken. Morehouse snapped an 11-year streak of wins in the event by either Abilene Christian or St. Augustine's by edging Emporia State. Abilene Christian finished third and St. Augustine's fourth, with all four teams less than one second apart.
