One-two Abilene Christian punch levels field in women's track ...

Tracy Barnes and Delloreen Ennis-London were a potent one-two combination, leading Abilene Christian to its second consecutive Division II Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships title May 27-29 at Emporia State.

Abilene Christian scored 1451/2 points, easily outdistancing runner-up St. Augustine's to win its fifth championship in the last six years and ninth title since 1985. The Wildcats also won the Division II indoor championship in March and, along with Abilene Christian's men's team, repeated their 1996 feat of winning all four division titles in track and field in one year.

Ennis-London established a meet record in the 100-meter hurdles as she won the event for the fourth straight year. Her finals time of 12.85 seconds broke the record she established in the preliminaries at 12.99. Ennis-London, who also finished second in the 100-meter dash, became just the fifth woman in Division II history to win the same event four times.

Barnes sprinted to victories in the 200- and 400-meter dashes for the second straight championship, the first time a competitor has accomplished that double in the 18-year history of the meet. She also joined with Ennis-London, Louise Ayetoteche and Juanita Robertson to win the 400-meter relay, earning Abilene Christian's sixth title in the event in the last seven years.

Hillerie Shelton added another title for the Wildcats in the triple jump and Ayetoteche placed second in the 400 dash and third in the 200.

St. Augustine's, which posted its second straight runner-up finish after snapping Abilene Christian's three-year winning streak in 1997, received first-place performances from Shenique Musgrove and Shanaka Walker. Musgrove repeated as the champion in the javelin throw with an effort of 161 feet, 2 inches, edging Geraldine George of Abilene Christian by one inch. Walker earned her second straight long-jump triumph after Andrea Giscombe of St. Augustine's was first in 1996 and 1997.

Emporia State's Deandra Doubrava gave the home fans much to cheer about by winning the heptathlon and 400-meter hurdles. Kim Bosen of Adams State also was a double winner in the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs. It marked the fourth consecutive year that the same athlete has placed first in both the 5,000 and 10,000.
