Duke's fast start beats field, rain for women's golf crown

Mother Nature took away the sunshine at the Division I Women's Golf Championships, but Duke's depth shone through as the Blue Devils won the rain-shortened event May 24 at Tulsa.

Duke shot a tournament-best 288 on the first day and never looked back, finishing with a three-round total of 895. The Blue Devlis had four golfers place 24th or better.

Duke, the nation's top-ranked team entering the tournament, was declared the champion after rain and lightning made the final round unplayable.

Arizona State, winner of five of the last six championships, and Georgia tied for second with a score of 903. Arizona carded a 904 and Pepperdine posted a 911 total to round out the top five.

Grace Park of Arizona State won individual honors, firing a three-round total of 212 to edge Duke's Candy Hannemann by one shot. Georgia's Shauna Estes was third with a score of 216. Last year's champion, Jennifer Rosales of Southern California, tied with Pepperdine's Tamie Durdin for fourth place with a score of 221.

With poor weather conditions, players had few opportunities to dip below par. Park and Estes were the only golfers to shoot scores in the 60s.

The Blue Devils' victory ended a streak for Arizona schools. Either Arizona State or Arizona had won the past six championships.
