Wilkinson fills Wayne State (Michigan) post

Wayne State (Michigan) has hired Bill Wilkinson as head men's ice hockey coach. Wilkinson takes over a program that has not fielded a squad since 1935 but is scheduled to begin competition again this year.

For the past 17 years, Wilkinson has served as head coach at Western Michigan. During his tenure, he has led teams to postseason play 14 of the last 15 years and has been named Central Collegiate Hockey Association Coach of the Year three times. Before accepting the head coaching duties at Western Michigan, Wilkinson was an assistant coach at Bowling Green (1980-82), North Dakota (1979-80) and St. Lawrence (1971-78). He also is a member of the NCAA Division I Ice Hockey Committee.

Collegiately, Wilkinson competed on St. Lawrence's ice hockey team at center and defense. He was team captain and was named the team's most valuable player in 1969-70.

Wilkinson earned a bachelor's degree in physical education and a master's degree in education from St. Lawrence in 1970 and 1976, respectively.

Field hockey -- Shelly Morris accepted head coaching duties at Ohio after serving in an interim capacity since February. Morris, an assistant since July 1997, succeeds Mary Milne ... Mindy Manolovich accepted duties as head field hockey and women's lacrosse coach at Western Maryland. For the past four years, Manolovich has been head coach at Oberlin.

Field hockey assistants -- Heather Moles and Brenda Lear added as assistants at Northwestern. Moles has been goalkeepers coach at Stanford since 1996 and Lear has been assistant field hockey coach and head lacrosse coach at Pacific (California) for two years.

Football -- Chris Phelps appointed as head coach at Siena ... New Hampshire head coach Bill Bowes announced plans to retire after 27 seasons. Bowes, the most-victorious football coach in the Atlantic 10 Conference, closes his tenure with a 175-106-5 mark. The school chose Sean McDonnell, an assistant coach for eight seasons, including the last five as offensive coordinator, as Bowes' successor.

Football assistants -- Mark Maciejewski and Blake Suehr named as assistant coaches at St. Francis (Pennsylvania) ... Ferris State added Bill Bedenbaugh as offensive line coach and Jay Sawvel as defensive secondary coach. Bedenbaugh, who replaces Matt Limegrover, has been a graduate assistant coach at Central Michigan since 1997. Sawvel was a graduate assistant at Notre Dame for three years and succeeds Tim Banks ... Spencer Prescott appointed as outside linebackers coach at Temple.

Men's ice hockey -- Scott Owens chosen as head coach at Colorado College to replace Don Lucia. Owens has been head coach and general manager of the Des Moines Buccaneers of the Junior A-Level United States Hockey League for the past four seasons.

Men's soccer -- Sigi Schmid resigned as coach at UCLA ... Paul Holocher named head coach at UC Santa Cruz to replace Paul Lester ... Cal State Northridge hired Terry Davila as head coach to succeed Marwan Ass'ad, who resigned. Davila has been coaching director of the Valley United Soccer Club in San Fernando Valley, California, since February ... Gordon head women's soccer coach Marc Whitehouse has been named head men's coach. Whitehouse has coached the women's team for seven years and previously coached the men's squad from 1980 to 1984.

Men's soccer assistant -- North Carolina selected Oliver Weiss as an assistant coach.

Women's soccer -- East Tennessee State chose Heather Puckett as head coach ... Carl Straub resigned as head coach at Carroll (Montana) ... Allison Lee elevated to head coach after serving as interim head coach. Lee, who replaces Brian Wiesner, has been an assistant coach with the program for four years ... Sheryl Raithel hired as head coach at Hamline. Raithel has been head women's soccer coach at Pace (Florida) High School ... Northwestern State head coach Pete Watkins resigned to become head coach of Ferris State's first varsity women's squad.

Women's soccer assistants -- George Mason hired Sue Vodicka as assistant coach. Vodicka spent last season as head women's coach at Virginia Commonwealth ... Iowa added Ian Rickerby as an assistant to succeed Ron Rainey. From 1994 to 1999, Rickerby was an assistant women's soccer coach at Evansville ... Dayton added Deborah Flaherty and Greg Sheen as assistants. Flaherty, a 1998 graduate of Michigan and three-year captain of the women's soccer team, succeeds Rebecca Myers. Sheen has been director of coaching with the Tophat Soccer Club in Atlanta.

Softball -- Anderson hired Pam Bryant as head coach. Bryant formerly coached the program from 1985-87 and 1991-95 ... Centenary (Louisiana) head coach Matt Prysock resigned.

Men's and women's tennis -- Wake Forest promoted Brian Fleishman to head women's coach. Fleishman has been an assistant with the program for two seasons and succeeds Lew Gerrard, who resigned ... Indianapolis named Scott Riggle as head men's coach ... Don Lowry resigned as head men's coach at UC Santa Barbara, effective immediately. The school appointed Ross Duncan and Gary Colson as men's tennis coaches for the remainder of the season ... Scott Mitchell announced plans to retire as head women's coach at Catawba.

Men's and women's volleyball -- Purdue head women's coach Joey Vrazel resigned ... Kristenne Robison chosen as head women's coach at St. Lawrence ... Angela Rock named head women's coach at Alaska Fairbanks ... Indiana/Purdue-Fort Wayne head women's coach Tim Heffron resigned to become associate athletics director for business affairs at the school ... Dulcie Stevens chosen as head women's coach at Florida International ... Carol Howe-Veenstra stepped down as head women's coach at St. Benedict, effective after the fall season, to concentrate on serving as athletics director, a position she has held for 12 years. In 14 seasons as head coach, Howe-Veenstra has captured six Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference titles ... Michon Lubbers chosen as head women's coach at Rollins.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant -- North Carolina State named Li Xiao-Feng as women's assistant coach ... Fresno State hired Ruth Lawanson as an assistant. Lawanson, a 1992 Olympic bronze medalist and former U.S. National Team member, has been an assistant at Purdue for the past four years.

STAFF

Athletic training -- Erik Rasmussen chosen as athletic trainer at Denver.

Business manager -- Longwood selected Ellen Moss-Farmville as athletics business manager/compliance coordinator.

Development -- Craig Diehl chosen as director of Gettysburg's Orange and Blue Club.

Sports Information -- Merrimack named Ken Golner as sports information director.

Sports information assistant -- West Virginia hired Adrienne Mullikin as associate sports information director. Mullikin has been at Towson for the past two years.

CONFERENCES

The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference named John Leonard as special events coordinator. Leonard has been head basketball coach at Manhattan.

The Mountain West Conference selected Bobby Dibler and Margi McDonald as coordinators of basketball officials.


NOTABLES

Purdue senior guard/forward Stephanie White-McCarty selected as the Honda Award winner as the top collegiate woman athlete in basketball for 1998-99. The Big Ten Conference Player of the Year, White-McCarty's 707 points, 188 rebounds, 156 assists and 78 steals contributed to Purdue's successful national championship run.

The American Baseball Coaches Association selected the following coaches as hall of fame inductees for 2000: Bill Alhouse, Stanford (retired); Jack Allen, Tarleton State; Jim Bowen, Cal State Stanislaus; John Fontana, Southington (Connecticut) High School (retired); Les Murakami, Hawaii; and Richard Rockwell, Le Moyne.

The College Golf Foundation and Rolex Watch U.S.A. named Eric Gleacher and Elizabeth Daniels as Rolex Achievement Award winners. The award is presented to former varsity collegiate golfers who achieve excellence in their chosen careers outside golf. Gleacher, who was co-captain of the Northwestern golf team during his senior year, went into corporate finance, making partner at Lehman Brothers in 1973 and partner at Morgan Stanley in 1983 before establishing his own investment bank in 1990. Daniels, who helped to establish the first women's golf team at Wake Forest, became partner in the law firm of Johnson, Blakely, Pope, Bokor, Ruppel and Burns in 1984. She is a member of the Florida Bar, and in 1987, Daniels became the first woman elected as president of the Clearwater Bar Association.

The following individuals have been selected as 1999 inductees into the Southwestern Bell Cotton Bowl Hall of Fame: Sammy Baugh, Texas Christian, quarterback; Frank Broyles, Arkansas, coach; David Hodge, Houston, linebacker; Felix McKnight, president/team selection chairman, Cotton Bowl Athletic Association; James Street, Texas, quarterback.

Emil Parker, Roy Pickerill and Tim Petermann named as inductees into the College Sports Information Directors of America Hall of Fame. Parker is retiring after 31 years as sports information director at Davidson, where he also has served as assistant athletics director for media relations. Pickerill and Petermann serve as sports information directors at Kentucky Wesleyan and Wisconsin-Eau Claire, respectively.


DEATHS

Former Northern Illinois head men's basketball coach William A. Healey died April 6 at the age of 90. Healey built a 388-188 career record in 25 seasons as a head basketball coach, including a nine-year run at Northern Illinois. He also served as director of health, physical education and athletics at Northeast Missouri State College, now Truman State, from 1952-53.

Johnny Dee, former Notre Dame head men's basketball coach, died April 24 of cancer. He was 75. Dee coached at Notre Dame from 1964-71 and built a 116-80 mark during his tenure. Prior to his stint at Notre Dame, he was chosen as head coach at Alabama at the age of 28, becoming the youngest coach in NCAA history at the time. Dee concluded his run at Alabama after four seasons.

Brandon Burlsworth, a football offensive guard at Arkansas, was killed April 28 in an automobile collision. He was 22. Burlsworth, a second-team all-America selection and all-Southeastern Conference pick, had been drafted by the National Football League's Indianapolis Colts.

Former Appalachian State President Herbert W. Wey, died April 8. Wey was 84. He also served as chairman of education at Miami (Florida).

Robert A. (Bud) Francis, former women's basketball and softball coach at Charleston (West Virginia), died April 8 at the age of 70.
