New bowl among 22 certified

The Mobile Alabama Bowl, scheduled for December 22 in Ladd-Peebles Stadium in Mobile, Alabama, is the single new bowl recommended for certification for the 1999-00 season by the NCAA Football Certification Subcommittee.

Three proposed bowl games for 2000-01 also received initial certification from the subcommittee. Representatives for those proposed bowls -- the Houston Bowl in Houston; the Freedom Bowl in San Francisco; and the Silicon Valley Bowl in San Jose, California -- will be required to make an additional appearance before the committee in April 2000 to assure that all postseason bowl requirements have been met before receiving final certification.

The subcommittee also recommended recertification of 21 other bowls -- including the Jeep Aloha Classics Bowl, which features back-to-back games -- at its April 27-29 meeting in Dallas. The recommendations are subject to approval by the Division I Championships/Competition Cabinet, which meets July 6-8.

In addition to the Mobile Alabama Bowl, the 1999-00 certified bowls include: Axa/Equitable Liberty Bowl, Chick-Fil-A Peach Bowl, CompUSA Florida Citrus Bowl, Culligan Holiday Bowl, FedEx Orange Bowl, Humanitarian Bowl, Insight.Com Bowl, Jeep Aloha Classics Bowl (two games), Las Vegas Bowl, Micron/PC Bowl, Motor City Bowl, Music City Bowl, Nokia Sugar Bowl, Outback Bowl, Rose Bowl, Sanford Independence Bowl, Southwestern Bell Cotton Bowl Classic, Sylvania Alamo Bowl, Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, Toyota Gator Bowl and Wells Fargo Sun Bowl.

NCAA member institutions cannot participate in postseason football competitions that are not certified. The certification process ensures that bowls meet specific standards in terms of officiating, insurance, distribution of funds and other aspects of the event.
