GTE Academic All-America fall/winter teams selected

The GTE Academic All-America fall/winter men's and women's at-large teams feature student-athletes from soccer and swimming as team members of the year.

John Cahoy, a swimmer from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and Erin Baxter, a soccer standout from the University of Florida, are GTE Academic All-America Team Members of the Year in the university division.

Soccer players Martin Forman of Ohio Wesleyan University and Pauliina Miettinen of Franklin Pierce College are college division team members of the year.

Cahoy, a senior chemistry/biochemistry major, is joined on the first team by fellow Gophers Tim Hartung, a two-time NCAA wrestling champion, and swimmer Martin Zielinski, a senior biology/premedicine major.

Also on the men's university division first team is Calvin Thigpen, a cross country runner from the University of Mississippi, who recently was awarded a Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship by the NCAA.

Baxter, a first-team soccer all-American and co-captain of the 1998 NCAA Division I national champion Gators, is a senior marketing major and a three-time first-team all-Southeastern Conference performer.

Gladys Ganiel, another NCAA Walter Byers Postgraduate Scholarship recipient, also was named to the women's university division first team. Ganiel is a cross country runner from Providence College.

Forman is a senior biology/environmental studies major who helped the Bishops capture the 1998 NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship.

Miettinen is an elementary education major from Helsinki, Finland, who is joined on the first team by teammate Pauliina Auveri, also a senior from Helsinki.

The GTE Academic All-America Teams are selected by a vote of the 1,800-member College Sports Information Directors of America. Nominees must be a varsity starter or key reserve and maintain a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.200 (4.000 scale).
