Spring Championships Preview -- Division III Women's Lacrosse

Field: Twelve teams are selected, distributed among regions as follows -- New England (three), Metro (two), New York (three), West (one) and South Atlantic (three).

Dates and sites: First-round games will be May 6 at campus sites and quarterfinals are on campus May 10. The semifinals and championship game will be May 16-17 at UMBC.

These are the only games for which results will be posted. Round-by-round results and pairings will be published in the May 24 issue of The NCAA News. The championship game story and results will be published in the June 7 issue.

Championship notes: Undefeated College of New Jersey returned to the top last year after its string of championships with undefeated records was snapped by Middlebury in 1997. Even with the title they won in 1992 vacated for using an ineligible player, the Lions won four other times. Sharon Pfluger has been coach for all but the first and the last of those titles. Pfluger also has led her Lions teams to six Division III field hockey championship ... Other than Middlebury and College of New Jersey, Ursinus is the only other team to have won the championship ... William Smith, with five championship-game appearances, has been in more championship games than any school but College of New Jersey, but has yet to win a title. The Herons' last championship-game appearance was 1995, when they lost to the Lions, 14-13.
