Harrick assumes basketball post at Georgia

Georgia has named Jim Harrick as head men's basketball coach. Harrick, who has been head men's basketball coach at Rhode Island since May 1997, replaces Ron Jirsa, who was released after two seasons.

Before joining Rhode Island, Harrick served as head men's basketball coach at UCLA from 1988 to 1996. He led the school to a national championship in 1995 and earned national coach-of-the-year honors the same year. He coached at Pepperdine before that, compiling a 167-97 mark from 1979 to 1988 and garnering West Coast Athletic Conference coach-of-the-year recognition four times. Harrick was an assistant and head coach at Morningside (California) High School before entering the collegiate ranks as an assistant coach at Utah State from 1973-1977 and at UCLA from 1977 to 1979.

Harrick earned a bachelor's degree from Morris Brown (now University of Charleston) in 1960 and a master's degree from Southern California in 1966.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

George H. VanderZwaag appointed as director of athletics and recreation at Rochester, effective July 1. VanderZwaag, who succeeds Jeffrey Vennell, has been an athletics administrator at Princeton since 1991, most recently serving as senior associate director of athletics ... Wichita State athletics director Bill Belknap announced plans to retire, effective June 30. Belknap has been athletics director at the school since 1993.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Tami Matheny, head tennis coach at South Carolina-Spartanburg, assumed additional duties as senior woman administrator to replace Carmen Nelon.

Chuck Nagle resigned as assistant director of athletics for external affairs at Eastern Michigan to become director of sponsorship sales of the Bowie (Maryland) Baysox Baseball Club, a Class AA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles ... Mike Blaser resigned after four years as assistant athletics director at Eastern Kentucky to become an administrator with the Kentucky Fair and Exposition Center.

COACHES

Baseball--Bucknell selected Mike Anders as pitching coach ... Kevin Nichols hired as head coach at Erskine, effective at the end of the season, to replace Dan Massarelli. Nichols, who has been an assistant at Alabama-Huntsville since 1997, will serve as an assistant with Erskine for the remainder of the season.

Men's basketball--Florida Atlantic selected Sidney Green as head coach ... Dave Bliss resigned as head coach at New Mexico to become head coach at Baylor ... San Jose State awarded head coach Phil Johnson a five-year contract extension through the 2003-04 season after completing his first season with the program ... Price replaces Gary Leiner, who will become the director of basketball operations. Price was a three-time all-Atlantic Coast Conference performer at Georgia Tech from 1983-86 and went on to a 12-year career in the National Basketball Association ... Joe Dooley selected as an assistant at New Mexico ... Georgia Southern hired Rob Wilkes as an assistant. Wilkes has been an assistant at Lynn for the past six years ... Women's basketball -- Caldwell head coach Bob Costello resigned ... Steve Johnson resigned after seven years as head coach at Greensboro ... Northwestern named June Olkowski as head coach to replace Don Perrelli, who retired. Olkowski has been head women's basketball coach at Butler for six seasons ... Virginia Tech awarded head coach Bonnie Henrickson a contract extension through the 2003-04 season ... Trina Patterson resigned as head coach at William and Mary after eight seasons ... Northwest Missouri State announced the retirement of Wayne Winstead after 20 years as head coach, effective June 30. The two-time Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Coach of the Year closes his tenure with a 311-244 mark ... Kristy Sims-Curry accepted the head coaching position at Purdue to succeed Carolyn Peck, who became head coach and general manager of the WNBA's Orlando Miracle. Sims-Curry has been a women's assistant coach at Louisiana Tech for the past three years.

Women's basketball assistant -- Texas-San Antonio appointed Jeff Dow as assistant coach.

Men's and women's cross country--Kimberly Lumkes hired as head women's coach at Milwaukee School of Engineering to replace Phil Pinkowsky, who was head coach for both programs and will continue as head men's cross country coach.

Women's basketball assistants--Clayton State added Don Cardell, Doug Crane and Greg Shook as assistants.

Football -- Louisville awarded head coach John L. Smith a contract through the 2007 season ... Bob Brush appointed head coach at Wingate ... North Dakota hired Dale Lennon as head coach. Morgan State chose Stanley Mitchell as interim head coach. Mitchell, who replaces Stump Mitchell, was linebackers coach at the school.

Football assistants--Greensboro added Rick Larrick as defensive coordinator to replace Jody Kafina. Larrick has been assistant football coach, head basketball coach and head golf coach at High Point Central (North Carolina) High School ... Virginia defensive coordinator Rick Lantz will no longer coach linebackers; defensive tackles coach David Turner has been moved to linebackers coach, and defensive ends coach Ty Smith has been awarded additional responsibilities as defensive tackles coach ... Dana Chambers appointed as defensive line coach at Southwest Missouri State ... San Diego defensive coordinator Brian Murphy resigned to take a similar position at Lehigh ... Jahner and Vlcko have been with the program for four years and most recently served as defensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, respectively ... Jay Bubak added as defensive backs coach at Missouri Western State. Last season, Bubak was defensive backs and special teams coordinator at South Dakota ... Montana added Bob Cole as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach to replace Brent Pease. Cole has been offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Portland State for the past six seasons ... Northern Iowa added Garrick McGee as wide receivers coach, Chris Whitmore as assistant secondary coach and Jay Kaiser as tight ends and assistant offensive line coach. The school also promoted Jay Niemann to defensive coordinator and elevated Todd Eagen to recruiting coordinator. Niemann and Eagen will retain duties as linebackers coach and defensive line coach, respectively.

Men's soccer -- Southern Maine appointed Robert P. Murphy Jr. as head coach ... T.J. Kostecky appointed as head coach at Long Island-Brooklyn ... Fort Lewis hired Jeremy Gunn as head coach. Gunn, who replaces Jeremy Fishbein, has been head coach at Cal State Bakersfield ... Denison selected Robert Russo as head coach. Russo has coached at Oneonta State since 1995 ... St. Francis (Indiana) named Mitch Ellisen head coach ... Thomas Secco hired as head coach at DePaul.

Women's soccer -- Joann Wolf hired as head coach at Northwest Missouri State. The program is scheduled to begin competition in fall 1999 ... Belmont hired Patricia Hughes as head coach to succeed Kathleen Penner. Hughes has been interim head women's soccer coach at Auburn since December 1998.

Women's soccer assistants--Marywood assistant coach Karin Sandstrom resigned ... Hilton Brashford named as an assistant at Evansville. Brashford replaces Ian Rickerby, who resigned in December.

Softball -- Kathleen Finnegan resigned as head coach at Ramapo but will remain with the athletics department in the area of special projects and programs. The school named Ben Allen as interim head coach for the remainder of the season.

Softball assistants -- Ramapo assistant coach Deena Bishop resigned. The school selected Todd Lizzo as interim assistant coach for the remainder of the season.

Men's and women's swimming and diving--Alabama named Don Wagner as head men's and women's coach ... Gardner-Webb named Mike Simpson as head women's coach.

Synchronized swimming -- Amy O'Donnell chosen as head coach at Alabama-Birmingham. The program is scheduled to begin competition during the 1999-00 school year.

Men's and women's tennis -- West Chester appointed Greg Stipa as interim men's coach to succeed Lee Morris, who resigned.

Men's tennis assistant -- Robbie Weiss selected as men's assistant at Georgia Tech ... Jean Hill chosen as part-time men's and women's assistant at Westminster (Missouri).

Men's and women's track--Jim Good hired as head track coach and assistant football coach at Illinois College. Good has been assistant football coach and assistant head track coach at Linfield.

Men's and women's volleyball--Assumption named Bob Weiner as head coach ... Nebraska-Kearney tabbed Richard Squiers as women's head coach ... Julie Stempel Ibieta chosen as head women's coach at New Orleans to succeed Betsy Becker Ferrer, who became head coach at Tulane. Stempel Ibieta has spent the last two years as head coach at North Carolina-Charlotte ... Assumption hired Bob Weiner as head women's coach. Weiner, who spent last season as head coach at Montana State-Northern in Havre, Montana, replaces Rich Harrington ... Sue Snyder resigned her women's head coaching post at San Diego. Snyder closes a nine-year stint with a 193-89 record ... Ben Weiss selected as women's head coach at Milwaukee School of Engineering. Weiss was an assistant in 1998 and was appointed as interim coach at the conclusion of the season ... Binghamton chose Glenn Kiriyama as women's head coach, replacing Colleen Cashman. Kiriyama was an assistant at Eastern Illinois for four seasons ... Rhodes selected Samantha Wolinski as head women's coach ... Yvette Moorehead elevated to head coach at George Washington after serving as an assistant with the program since last July. Moorehead succeeds Susie Homan, who resigned after nine seasons.

Men's and women's volleyball assistants--Montana State named Jerry Wagner as a men's assistant coach ... Minnesota-Duluth selected Anita Hanson as assistant coach and assistant director of the Student-Athlete Academic Center.

STAFF

Compliance--Desiree Reed selected as director of compliance at San Jose State. Reed, who succeeds Gloria Nevarez, was a compliance assistant at California during the 1997-98 academic year.

Development--Penn State hired John C. Powell as director of athletic development to succeed Ken Cutler. Powell was a sales vice president with AT&T's Consumer Service unit.

Development assistants--Syracuse appointed Joseph Manhertz Jr. as associate director of development and selected Maura Donovan and Lisa Sinopoli as assistant directors of development. Manhertz has been event services manager at Ohio State's Jerome Schottenstein Center; Donovan is completing an internship with the Orange Bowl Committee; and Sinopoli has been with the Connecticut Athletics Development Fund since 1991.

Facilities--Richard Whitmore tabbed as athletics facility manager at Wesleyan (Connecticut). Since 1996, Whitmore has been head men's basketball coach and assistant baseball coach at Kenyon.

Media relations assistants--Long Island-Brooklyn named Chris O'Connor as assistant director of media relations ... Chris Cook appointed associate director of athletic media at Texas Tech. For the past five years Cook has been assistant sports information director at Saint Louis.

Student services -- Mark Krautheim named as director of student services for athletes at Delaware.

Sports information--Kevin Graber selected as sports information director at West Alabama ... Adelphi named Daniel Booth as director of sports information ... Siena selected Mike Carey as sports information director ... Kevin Graber selected as sports information director at West Alabama. Graber was assistant sports information director at College of St. Rose.

CONFERENCES

Ohio Valley Conference coordinator of football officiating R. L. Patey announced retirement plans, effective July 1. Patey was an official with the Southeastern and Ohio Valley Conferences for 24 seasons and has been coordinator of football officials for the OVC for 22 years.

The Midwestern Collegiate Conference named Bob Lovell director of basketball operations. Lovell has been host of the Indiana Sports Talk show for the past five years and will continue to host the show during his tenure. The conference also announced the retirement of Jim Lessig as coordinator of men's basketball officiating. Lessig has been coordinator since 1992 and is a former commissioner of the Sun Belt and Mid-American Conferences.

ASSOCIATIONS

John Rebelo, chairman and chief executive officer of Peninsula Bank of San Diego, chosen as president of the 1999 Culligan Holiday Bowl. Rebelo has been involved with the Holiday Bowl since 1993.

Gary Cunningham, athletics director at UC Santa Barbara, has been reelected to a second four-year stint as president of the United States Collegiate Sports Council, through August 1, 2004. Cunningham currently serves on the NCAA Division I Budget/Finance Cabinet.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Melody Lawrence hired as public information coordinator. Since 1993, Lawrence has been a communications specialist with Anthem, Inc., in Indianapolis

The Association appointed Nithya Rao as database administrator in the Indianapolis office. Rao has been a management and information systems analyst at Indiana University Department of Medicine for the past year and a half.

Ty Halpin named as publications editor at the NCAA. For the past year and a half Halpin has worked as sports information director at Transylvania University.

CORRECTION

The NCAA News championships results for the Division III Women's Swimming and Diving Championships incorrectly listed the school with which Nora Kelly is associated. She is with Springfield.


NOTABLES

Florida Southern head baseball coach Chuck Anderson will have his uniform number retired by the school. Anderson has been associated with the school for 41 seasons including 17 as head coach, 20 as an assistant and four as a player. He currently has a 715-207-1 mark as head coach at the school.

Elton Brand, a sophomore at Duke and Chamique Holdsclaw, a senior at Tennessee, were named 1999 Naismith Players of the Year by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. The organization also selected Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski and Purdue head women's coach Carolyn Peck as Naismith Coaches of the Year and C. M. Newton, Kentucky athletics director, as Outstanding Contributor to Basketball.

The following are winners of the Intercollegiate Golf/Tennis/Track and Field Awards: Golf -- Jenny Chuasiriporn, Duke, Marilynn Smith Award; Joel Kribel, Stanford, Dave Williams Award. Tennis -- Amanda Augustus, California, Gladys Heldman Award; Ryan Wolters, Stanford, Dan Magill Award; Track and field -- Debbie Ferguson, Georgia, Jackie Joyner-Kersee Award.

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association awarded Duke's Elton Brand the Oscar Robertson Player of the Year trophy, named Auburn's Cliff Ellis as the Henry Iba Coach of the Year and selected Florida's Eddie Shannon as winner of the Most Courageous award.


DEATHS

Robert T. Conley, former president at Seton Hall, died March 9. He was 67 ... Robert Q. Marston, former president at Florida and former chancellor at Mississippi, died March 14 at the age of 76 ... Former Harvard track coach William W. McCurdy died March 11 at the age of 82.
