Mercyhurst tabs Sisti as ice hockey coach

Mercyhurst has chosen Michael Sisti as head women's ice hockey coach. The program is scheduled to begin varsity competition next fall.

For the past six seasons, Sisti has been an assistant with the Mercyhurst men's ice hockey program, serving the last three as associate head coach. He also has been director of operations for the Mercyhurst Ice Center and will retain those responsibilities.

Before joining Mercyhurst, Sisti was an assistant coach at Canisius for three seasons. He also has worked at USA Hockey.

In college, Sisti played ice hockey at Canisius, where he was team captain for two years. He is third on Canisius' list of all-time leading scorers with 163 points and is second in goals scored in one season with 33. He graduated with a marketing degree in 1990.

Women's ice hockey will be one of two Division I sports sponsored by Mercyhurst. The school also sponsors men's ice hockey at the Division I level.

Cal State Stanislaus appointed Milton Richards as athletics director ... Kevin Emerick named as athletics director at Oklahoma Panhandle State. Emerick also is head women's basketball coach and will retain head coaching duties ... Louisville awarded athletics director Tom Jurich a 13-year contract extension through 2012. Jurich has been athletics director since October 21, 1997 ... Dianne Jones and Willie Myers resigned as athletics directors at Wisconsin-Whitewater. Jones, who has been athletics director for women since 1990, will continue as a professor in the department of health, physical education, recreation and coaching. Myers, who has been athletics director for men since July 1983, will continue to teach in the department of health, physical education, recreation and coaching and will retain his duties as head wrestling coach, a position he has held since 1968 ... Irv Cross hired as athletics director at Macalester to replace Ken Andrews, who resigned. Cross formerly served as athletics director at Idaho State and has been a television broadcaster ... Paul Krebs, senior associate athletics director at Ohio State, chosen as athletics director at Bowling Green. ... Samford's Stephen Allgood announced plans to retire as athletics director, effective at the end of the academic year. Allgood has been athletics director since 1988.

SENIOR WOMAN ADMINISTRATOR

Lamar's Laura Myers resigned as senior woman administrator and head women's golf coach to become assistant health and fitness director at the Jewish Community Center of Dallas. The school selected Karen Saevarsdottir as interim head women's golf coach.

ASSOCIATE DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS

Misericordia appointed Dave Martin as associate athletics director. Martin also serves as head men's basketball coach and recruiting coordinator at the school.

Gary Sobba, assistant athletics director for marketing and broadcasting at Houston for the past four years, resigned to join Learfield Communications, a national sports marketing and communications firm.

Baseball--Wentworth Institute added Josh Carroll, a 1998 graduate of Amherst, as an assistant coach ... John Jay head coach Lou DeMartino announced plans to retire following the 1999 season.

Baseball assistant--Franklin Pierce named Stan Jurkoic as an assistant coach.

Men's basketball--John MacLeod resigned as head coach at Notre Dame ... St. Peter's extended the contract of head coach Rodger Blind ... Ben Howland hired as head coach at Pittsburgh. Hal Nunnally announced plans to step down as head coach at Randolph-Macon after 24 years. Nunnally built a career 431-232 mark and led teams to 10 NCAA tournament appearances. The school chose Mike Rhoades, an assistant with the program since 1996, as Nunnally's successor.

Men's basketball assistants--Brian Ostermann resigned as an assistant coach at Missouri-Kansas City to become head coach at Colby. Assistant coach Bernie Pearson also resigned to become head coach at Pratt (Kansas) College.

Women's basketball--Washington State released Harold Rhodes as head coach ... Florida State awarded head coach Sue Semrau a contract extension ... Deb Reardon resigned as head coach at New Hampshire College ... UMBC head coach Jennifer Bednarek accepted a four-year contract extension ... Clayton State chose A. C. McCullers to succeed Laura Williges as head coach. McCullers, the third most-victorious girls' basketball coach in Georgia, has been head girls' basketball coach at Morrow (Georgia) High School ... Men's and women's cross country--Doug Martin selected as head men's and women's coach at Anderson. Martin was an assistant at Cumberland ... New Paltz State hired Brett Willmott as head men's and women's cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field coach. For the past two and a half years, Willmott has served as an assistant men's and women's cross country and indoor and outdoor track and field coach at Plattsburgh State.

Football--Nicholls State chose Daryl Daye, an assistant coach at Liberty for the past eight seasons, as head coach.

Football assistants--Andrew Swasey appointed as cornerbacks coach at Houston. For the past two years, Swasey has served as an assistant on the strength and conditioning staff at Miami (Florida) ... Jacksonville chose Shap Boyd as defensive backs coach ... Mike Garrison selected as running backs coach at New Mexico State ... For the past six seasons, Sisti, who will retain his responsibilities as director of operations for the Mercyhurst Ice Center, has been associate head coach of men's hockey at the school ... St. Lawrence named Paul J. Flanagan as head coach.

Women's ice hockey assistant--Shawna Davidson added as an assistant coach at Minnesota-Duluth. The program is scheduled to begin competition next fall.

Men's soccer--Bloomsburg named Paul Payne head coach ... Eddie Ballas named as head coach at Rutgers-Newark. Ballas replaces Percy Pineda, who resigned following the 1998 season ... Wesleyan (Connecticut) hired Geoffrey Wheeler, an assistant men's soccer coach at Stanford for two seasons, as head coach to succeed Terry Jackson, who announced plans to retire after 31 years. Jackson is the school's most-victorious soccer coach with a 209-163-39 record.

Men's soccer assistant--Erin Sullivan chosen as an assistant coach at St. John's.

Women's soccer--Curry named Danielle Ferrara as women's soccer and women's lacrosse coach and director of intramurals ... Heather Kerby added as head coach at Southeast Missouri State ... Wagner hired Phil Fluhr as head coach. Fluhr, who most recently coached women's soccer at Dominican College in Orangeburg, New York, succeeds Ed Hynes ... Diane Drake added as head coach at Georgetown. From 1996-99, Drake has been an assistant soccer coach at North Carolina-Greensboro ... Southern Indiana chose Bill Wilkins as head coach. Wilkins has been head coach at Auburn since 1994.

Women's soccer assistant--Kerry Dziczkaniec hired as an assistant coach at Maryland. Dziczkaniec has been assistant women's soccer coach and recruiting coordinator at Florida State for three seasons.

Softball assistants--Angel Schofield added as an assistant coach at Wentworth Institute. Schofield also works as the school's head women's soccer coach ... Brockport State appointed Jennifer Polo as an assistant.

Men's and women's tennis--Anthony Wocke replaces Bob Coker as head men's and women's head coach at Bryant.

Men's and women's track and field assistant--Ronald Hardy accepted assistant coaching duties at Brockport State.

Men's and women's volleyball--Metropolitan State hired Jenelle Duvall as head coach to succeed Joan McDermott, who became athletics director at the school. Duvall has been an assistant at Northern Arizona for two years ... New Jersey Institute of Technology named Sheila Wooten as head women's coach ... St. Michael's selected Betsy Cieplicki as women's head coach ... Joe Getzin selected as women's head coach at Portland ... Oglethorpe head women's volleyball coach and assistant women's basketball coach Meredyth Grenier resigned.

Men's and women's volleyball assistant--Joy McKenzie selected as women's assistant at Long Beach State.

Academic services--East Stroudsburg named Julie A. Del Giorno as academic coordinator for athletics ... Sue Perlis chosen as coordinator of academic support at Misericordia.

CONFERENCES

The Mid-Continent Conference appointed Nancy Smith as director of media relations after serving in an interim capacity for the past two months. Smith joined the conference as assistant media relations director last July.

The Atlantic Coast Conference named Tommy Hunt as supervisor of football officials.

The Mountain West Conference hired Dan Butterly as assistant commissioner of marketing and Sarah Yount as director of special projects. Butterly most recently served as an assistant commissioner at the Missouri Valley Conference and Yount was director of marketing for the National Junior College Athletic Association.

ASSOCIATIONS

Tom Starr chosen as associate executive director for marketing for the Sanford Independence Bowl. Starr formerly served as executive director of the Sun Bowl and Freedom Bowl.

Sherry L. Calvert resigned as secretary-treasurer of the NCAA Division III Track Coaches Association. Jeff Wettach, head coach at Luther, has been selected as Calvert's successor.

Michael F. Adams, president at Georgia, chosen as chair-elect of the American Council on Education, and Tufts President John DiBiaggio named as chair of the American Council on Education board of directors.

The U.S. Olympic Committee hired John Ruger as USOC Athlete Ombudsman. Ruger has been president of his own sports marketing and management company since 1997 and formerly served as USOC manager of southeastern operations for the Hometeam '96 program from 1995 to 1996.

NATIONAL OFFICE

Robert Philippi was named as a membership services representative. Philippi has been director of compliance and student services at UNLV ... Carol Struewing added as a membership services representative. Struewing has been a senior capital sales administrator for Hill-Rom Company in Batesville, Indiana ... The Association hired Ron Barker, an investigator at Novell, Inc., since 1993, as an enforcement representative ... Andrea Sears, human resources coordinator, resigned to become a compensation analyst at Sprint ... Sharon Cessna named as assistant director of championships after serving as a youth programs coordinator ... Wayne Davis has been elevated to graphics manager to replace Vic Royal, effective after the Association's relocation to Indianapolis. Davis was senior graphics designer ... Israel Negron, membership services representative, resigned to become coordinator of player relations with the Florida Marlins of Major League Baseball ... NOTABLES

Eleanor Brantley Schwartz selected as recipient the Mid-Continent Conference Commissioners Award of Merit. Schwartz, who resigned recently as chancellor of Missouri-Kansas City after serving in that position since 1992, has been a member of the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and the NCAA Executive Committee. The award is presented to an individual chosen by the the conference's Presidents Council who has contributed significantly to higher education, intercollegiate athletics, the conference and its members.

Kansas State head football coach Bill Snyder was named the 1998 Bobby Dodd Coach of the Year award recipient. Snyder, head coach at Kansas State since November 1988, has guided his squads to six straight bowl games. The award is presented in recognition of an individual's outstanding tutelage of student-athletes' community awareness as well as academic and on-the-field proficiency.


DEATHS

Jacori Rufus, a football player at Idaho State, died in an automobile accident. He was 19. Rufus competed in 11 games as a defensive back. He tallied 28 tackles and returned an intercepted pass for a school-record 100 yards.

Former Norwich coach and athletics director Joseph G. Sabol died December 25, 1998. Sabol was head football coach at the school from 1965 to 1975. After a brief stint as head football coach at Gettysburg, Sabol returned to Norwich to serve as athletics director from 1978 until his retirement in 1992.

Former Harvard men's cross country and track and field coach William McCurdy died March 11 at the age of 82. McCurdy joined Harvard's track and cross country programs in 1950 as freshman track and cross country coach. During McCurdy's tenure as head men's cross country and indoor and outdoor track coach from 1952 to 1982, he compiled 10 Greater Boston Championship titles in cross country, 12 championship titles in indoor track and 15 championship crowns in outdoor track.

Sten Pierce, a former golf, wrestling and football coach at Wisconsin-Stout, died February 14. Pierce was 61. He served as Wisconsin-Stout's head wrestling coach from 1965 to 1972 and head football coach from 1970 to 1976. He also guided golf teams to conference titles in 1987, 1988 and 1989 before retiring as a full-time professor in 1995.

Former Missouri track coach Thomas Botts died March 1 at the age of 94. In 26 years as a head coach, Botts led Missouri to one national championship and guided 48 individual conference champions, five national champions and two Olympians.

Bluefield State baseball player Shannon Stewart died in an automobile accident March 12.

Former Indiana State President Alan C. Rankin died February 24. Rankin was 84.

College of New Jersey linebackers and punting coach Hank Johns died recently. Johns, a staff member of the program since 1991, played defensive tackle at Bloomsburg before graduating in 1973. He also coached at Harry Truman (Pennsylvania) from 1984 to 1990, including seven years as head coach.
