Finish in final event gives Wheaton (Massachusetts) first track crown

After a just falling short last season, Wheaton (Massachusetts) broke through for the school's first NCAA title at the Division III Women's Indoor Track Championships March 12-13 at Ohio Northern.

Wheaton, which placed second in both the indoor and outdoor track championships in 1998, led Wisconsin-La Crosse, 35-32, entering the meet-ending 1,600-meter relay. The quartet of Tenille Johnson, Amy Swanson, Colleen Myrie and Deshawnda Williams placed second behind North Central while Wisconsin-La Crosse took third.

The result gave Wheaton a 43-38 victory over Wisconsin-La Crosse, with two-time defending champion Christopher Newport placing third with 27 points.

Williams was the major individual contributor to Wheaton's championship effort. She repeated as champion in the 400-meter dash and came in third in the 55-meter dash. Johnson added a second-place performance in the 55-meter hurdles, and Beth Castagno took third in the high jump.

Wisconsin-La Crosse's lone champion also set a meet record. Patti Frankowiak added 17 inches to the 20-pound weight throw mark with her winning heave of 56 feet, 6 1/2 inches.

The runner-up finish was the second in the 15-year history of the championship for Wisconsin-La Crosse, which has not won a Division III indoor title.
